To head to the coast on 40 degree days?

It looks noticeably cooler by the south coast than where we are.. but is everyone going to have same idea? Will we just end up sitting in a traffic jam? Will the roads even melt???!!! Honestly, the fear around the forthcoming heat is real (& genuinely dangerous for the vulnerable I know) but for the rest of us, will it be like that stormy day we had recently where actually it was just a bit blowy for a couple of hours?! School's shut, I'm not working... what will we do all day at home? It will def be too to enjoy outside locally. DC are young teens. What are your plans??

It would be horrible. Too hot, too many people, no shade. Wouldn’t risk the drive either, traffic will likely be horrendous with people having the same idea.

I live near the coast but will be at work. I might have an early swim tomorrow in the sea, otherwise will be at work trying to keep my patients coolish and hydrated or home.

LaurieFairyCake · 16/07/2022 19:33

No one should be driving ANYWHERE on Sunday/Monday/Tuesday

Our emergency services are at complete breaking point - 10 hours wait at A and E even if you've had a heart attack - people have literally died ! so accidents/illness/car breakdowns all have to be minimised as far as possible

I'm staying in with the blinds down and the fan/portable air conditioner on for the next 3 days

I won't walk the dogs at all - they will be fine

deedledeedledum · 16/07/2022 19:37

Mad dogs and English men. Ffs don't go to the beach on a super hot day.

Thinkingblonde · 16/07/2022 19:38

A tip for anyone whether staying home or not. Find some cardboard big enough to cover your car windscreen, cut it to shape then place it inside the car over the W/screen, pull the sun visors down to keep it in place. If you can’t find a piece big enough, tape a few bits of cardboard together. Cover metal belt buckles and the gear knob, put a towel over the steering wheel. These get hot in blazing sun and can cause burns.

CredibilityProblem · 16/07/2022 19:38

"The Coast" is a wild overgeneralisation. Bournemouth will probably be hell on earth next Tuesday. Bamburgh will be absolutely gorgeous.

pigsDOfly · 16/07/2022 19:38

Like the pp thinking of going to Asda for the day, I was thinking the same thing when walking around my local Tesco yesterday.

Lovely and cool. I'd be very tempted to lurk there for the day if only the dog could come with me.

listsandbudgets · 16/07/2022 19:39

We are planning a walk at about 7am woth a view to being home about 8.30ish and then a long day dworking from home with the curtains closed, ice machine running and plenty of cool drinks. Perhaps another walk late evening. DC both finished for summer so no worries about school.

We may venture outside for dinner if its cooled enough

Lingoflaming · 16/07/2022 19:42

We live near a forest and that's where we'll be having a picnic under shafey trees. The idea of sitting on an exposed beach under the full glare of the sun is madness.

SRS29 · 16/07/2022 19:45

OP I am on the South Coast and whilst the sea breeze does help the fact there is very little areas for shade people forget, especially on a beach. The heat then becomes overwhelming. Traffic and parking is manic also.

Jsy7 · 16/07/2022 19:45

I’m going to walk round M and S food for 9 hrs. Always chilly in there.

sobeyondthehills · 16/07/2022 19:46

I couldn't see if this had been suggested but if you have a lido that would be better than the coast

Hiphopopotamus · 16/07/2022 19:46

kindereggxo · 16/07/2022 19:28

Lots of gatekeeping on this thread surrounding holiday/beach towns Hmm

Yep - it’s like lockdown all over again with the old ‘we don’t want you’. Unfortunately just living near a beach doesn’t make you the owner of it and the coast belongs to everyone. So it’s absolutely none of your business how far people have traveled to get up ‘your’ seaside town.

(saying that OP it would be madness to travel ages to the coast on Monday. You want air con, not a shade less beach!)

Everyone on the coast will have their pitchforks out, they probably are already out in Cornwall

Love this 😂

cottagegardenflower · 16/07/2022 19:47

You will spend it in a traffic queue miles long. Dont do it.

XingMing · 16/07/2022 19:48

Well, we live in Cornwall. Right now the temperature is comfortable, but the roads to the beaches tomorrow will be hell; there won't be anywhere to park, so we shall stay home and take the dog swimming when the tide is high.

justasking111 · 16/07/2022 19:49

We live at the coast would go out in the boat but not visit the beach way too many tourists. The main road into Wales we've read of cars catching fire, breakdown galore. ASDA are selling a huge paddling pool inflatable for £30 I'd buy one of those for the garden and sit in it

Munchyseeds2 · 16/07/2022 19:50

I wouldn't be going to the coast even if we lived near!

Londonlass139 · 16/07/2022 17:46

Cinema is probably the best place to be-bloody freezing usually!

That’s a brilliant suggestion. Where I am on hot days the motorways are clogged with traffic Hans to the coast. To be avoided at all costs.

AlwaysLatte · 16/07/2022 19:53

I'd probably go for an early woodland walk followed by the cinema, over the seaside

Undecided111 · 16/07/2022 19:55

I’m not going to “do” anything. Just stay inside and watch TV, read, draw etc with DC. It’s only two days like that.

I remember last summer there were some very hot days (obviously not AS hot) that were too hot to go in the garden and we just sat around inside with a lot of screen time etc. It was completely fine and so much easier because I didn’t try and enjoy the weather or try and take us anywhere - I’d already written the days off as TV days. That’s my plan this week too.

Cailin66 · 16/07/2022 19:56

jams, not Hans. Why is there no edit possibility.

Abracadabra12345 · 16/07/2022 19:58

OhTheLeetleHandsAndFeetle · 16/07/2022 19:03

This is where I am going.

If you’ve not already seen it, I’d highly recommend Elvis which I’ve seen twice and keep thinking about. It’s also a long film so with the ads and trailers, that’s a cool 4 hours of air- conditioned bliss and then maybe a stroll around air-conditioned shops before or after?

Perfect

UnnecessaryFennel · 16/07/2022 20:03

I live on the Kent coast, love the sun and walk the 10 mins to our nearest beach several times a week. No way will I be going anywhere near it on Monday/Tuesday, at least not until about 5pm onwards when the sun is starting to go down. You'd be insane to get in a car to come here next week in the middle of the day.

Not gatekeeping, just being sensible. It will be windier, but all that means is more chance of burning!

LimboLass · 16/07/2022 20:04

I generally like the heat. Once on Holiday in Cyprus we went to the beach on a 40oC day. Even though the humidity was low we lasted about 2 hours before heading back to the hotel. It was verging on painful on our skin being in the sun.
