To head to the coast on 40 degree days?

It looks noticeably cooler by the south coast than where we are.. but is everyone going to have same idea? Will we just end up sitting in a traffic jam? Will the roads even melt???!!! Honestly, the fear around the forthcoming heat is real (& genuinely dangerous for the vulnerable I know) but for the rest of us, will it be like that stormy day we had recently where actually it was just a bit blowy for a couple of hours?! School's shut, I'm not working... what will we do all day at home? It will def be too to enjoy outside locally. DC are young teens. What are your plans??

You are off your trolley, OP.

Imagine if you broke down and had to sit in 40 degree heat

Imagine if your car was stuck in traffic and the air con wasn't sufficient to keep the temp at a reasonable level

There's no shade at most beaches

The sand will be scorching

The sea will reflect and amplify the impact of sunlight

Supporting businesses - eg cafes, garages etc may very well consider shutting and sending staff home if they can't keep temperatures at a safe level - so exactly who do you think will be there to assist you?

If you get into trouble - sunstroke, dehydration etc then first responders have to put themselves at risk to help you.

Why the fuck are you even considering it. It's two days. Stay home, draw the curtains, turn the fans on and watch Netflix....

"The Coast" is a wild overgeneralisation. Bournemouth will probably be hell on earth next Tuesday. Bamburgh will be absolutely gorgeous.

Quite. What I had in mind was a more remote spot, heading off early & prob only for few hours on actual beach followed by long shady lunch somewhere - it was just a consideration but I'm suitably warned off thanks to all the responses! Prob is our house gets sooo hot & garden not shaded til evening so it'll be unbearable at home. Kids too old for paddling pools now too I'm afraid! I'm now thinking forestry walk in morning & then cinema/ indoor swimming peppered with trips to supermarkets!! Wouldn't go outdoor lido as know they'll be mayhem & it really will be too hot to stay in long/sit out. It's only a couple of days, I'm sure we'll manage!

I live in London - our garden faces north but this time of year means sun all day.
Cool shower first thing then quick dog walk at local park before 8. Then just sitting around wearing not a lot with fan on.
Unfortunately my daughter starts a short course at a local university- no idea how hot it will be for her!

Lots of gatekeeping on this thread surrounding holiday/beach towns

Not so sure it is gatekeeping.

When I lived in Brighton I couldn't have cared less who came to spend the day there, but I never went to the beach on hot days and didn't know anyone local who did.

I have no wish to sit on a packed beach with no shade getting sun burnt.

Going to somewhere like Brighton beach on Monday or Tuesday would be my idea of hell, and will probably be just as hot.

Alright, calm down! Please read my subsequent posts.. it was just a consideration. Jeez..

I don’t understand the lemmings-like rush to the coast, where there’s no shade, no fresh cold water unless you lug cool boxes and the likelihood of long queues there and back.
Tomorrow I am walking DDog at 5am, then staying put indoors with a plentiful supply of cold drinks, snacks and a strategically placed fan or two.
I will happily sit and read or crochet all day 😄- it’s a really good excuse to do nothing!

Last time we went to Lyme Regis every single car park was full. I had to drive about a mile out to find a space. The walk back to the car up a steep hill wasn't fun. I'm sure lots of people will go, I would do what others have suggested and stay at home.

I think you’re talking about the main car park in Lyme… yes it’s up a hill… tbh we used to get a taxi when we lived near there (40 minutes ish), then we could go to the Standard.

As PP have said, we don’t need added congestion, stress, traffic from people travelling unessessarily to our area please. I have a community based job (nearish) the sea - I do not want to be stuck in traffic on my way to vulnerable people because Londoners fancied a day out 😫

If it wasn’t for ‘Londoners’ and others visiting your town there would be a drastic drop in business, jobs, and income into your town. You will soon be complaining when people start to travel abroad in their droves next year and seaside towns are just barely existing on stag and hen night parties.

SweetSakura · 16/07/2022 20:18

Not gatekeeping, I just regularly go the opposite way on the M27/M3 on sunny weekends and am astonished anyone wants to spend hours in a traffic jam!

Baystard · 16/07/2022 20:23

No chance, everyone will have the same idea. I'm planning swimming pool, cinema, air conditioned restaurant, etc. No guarantee they won't also be busy but at least won't have had to sit in traffic trying to get there, struggled to park, etc.

Clevs · 16/07/2022 20:24

Just stay at home. Less chance of anything happening to you to put pressure on already overstretched services should anything happen, and make exhausted staff even more exhausted (yes I still have to work in thick uniform and big boots).

I've actually never seen the appeal of beaches in the heat. The mixture of sand and suncream, its just so uncomfortable. I absolutely love a beach in the winter, wrapped up warm, flask of coffee wellies, walk along the shoreline with the bracing wind in your face. Makes you feel alive.

I think I've just found my beach twin 😂

I love a bracing beach walk in the winter.

User6286509 · 16/07/2022 20:36

So schools shut to 'protect' the DC and then they all head off to the beach blocking the roads, that sounds very sensible, it was pretty obvious that is what would happen.

Rafferty10 · 16/07/2022 20:38

I live on the South Coast and our local beach has only had a few people each day, its gorgeous, however the well known sandy beach 5 miles away has been packed.
We are tucked away in a quiet part of the South East and my holiday let guests have been astounded how quiet it is on the beach and roads locally...they usually go to Cornwall..

Livingthedreaminscotland · 16/07/2022 20:41

We are in Scotland so it will be a bit cooler. But after my 6 shift at a rather hot warehouse, I’m off to my local indoor swimming pool to cool off.

👏

Diyextension · 16/07/2022 20:45

I’m going to lay in it all day and turn into a lobster 🦞.

GetThatHelmetOn · 16/07/2022 20:48

In Spain everybody who can heads to the coast on high summer because is not as hot as in cities BUT nobody expects to spend the whole day out at the beach under the sun.

Do you know why siestas exist? So you stop, go inside somewhere cooler and catch your breath at the worst time of hot days.

TabithaTittlemouse · 16/07/2022 20:55

I live right by the beach in Cornwall. Come but bring pimms for me.

I might set the dc up with a cold drink stall outside the house. Wink

I’ll be working sadly so can’t guard ‘my beach’ (I don’t think I own a pitchfork).

It’s going to be madness wherever you are.

Clymene · 16/07/2022 20:56

I'm going to spend the day in Tesco

MrsLargeEmbodied · 16/07/2022 21:00

of course the coast is cooler, look for yourself

MrsLargeEmbodied · 16/07/2022 21:03

i went to the beach today,
high tide at lunch time
just glorious
i may go tomorrow
but it is a half an hour drive

itsjustnotok · 16/07/2022 21:03

The schools MUST close because it’s not safe for children…let’s go to the beach 🙄

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 16/07/2022 21:03

You do realise that in hot countries locals don’t go out in the hottest part of the day if they can avoid it. I just don’t understand this British desire to get so hot and potentially burnt in the very hot weather. It’s madness.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 16/07/2022 21:06

the beach is cooler!
you can swim in the sea,
you wont frazel
