To head to the coast on 40 degree days?

It looks noticeably cooler by the south coast than where we are.. but is everyone going to have same idea? Will we just end up sitting in a traffic jam? Will the roads even melt???!!! Honestly, the fear around the forthcoming heat is real (& genuinely dangerous for the vulnerable I know) but for the rest of us, will it be like that stormy day we had recently where actually it was just a bit blowy for a couple of hours?! School's shut, I'm not working... what will we do all day at home? It will def be too to enjoy outside locally. DC are young teens. What are your plans??

Having lived in a climate where it gets to 38C in the summer months, I remember doing a small outing early in the morning (7am swim), home by 9am then watch TV in a room with curtains closed and the fan on... Dinner in nearby mall for the airco, but only if it's nearby

That would have been an active day

Alternatively stay home and keep still

MrsLargeEmbodied · 16/07/2022 21:07

take a pop up tent

The Kent coast will be full of Kentish folk and Londoners.
It will be swamped.
And don't forget the lorry park that is the M20.

Lordofmyflies · 16/07/2022 21:18

We are in Cornwall. Its not going to get more than 29 degrees on Monday but even today, the local beach was rammed by 10am. There is no shade, no fresh water and its heaving. I was up at 7 for a swim and dog walk on the beach but home by 9.30. If you want to avoid the heat - dont go to sit on the beach.

I'm going to spend the day in Tesco

😂

Darbs76 · 16/07/2022 21:28

I definitely wouldn’t. I need to get the kids to Gatwick airport for 6pm ish as they are flying out to visit their dad. Hoping the M23 isn’t crowded.

I think I've just found my beach twin 😂

I love a bracing beach walk in the winter.

🙋‍♀️ Hi!

Go at 5 am

I’ve just had horrible trouble with my tyre pressure on the hit motorway. When we stopped at the services to use the air, there was a long queue of people with the same issue. That in itself has just added more than an hour to what should have been a two hour journey.

Imagine fluctuations in tyre pressure, melting tarmac, passengers with heatstroke all in bank holiday traffic and multiply it by an unknown factor. Stay home; it will be less stress.

Cinema is probably the best place to be-bloody freezing usually!

That's actually a really good idea.

I always take a jumper to the cinema - even in the height of summer!

I think they're now saying the coast isn't going to be any cooler. Agree with those saying it's not a day for travelling but staying in and keeping as cool as possible.

South coast here - Hampshire.

We are predicted 31/32°. So not particularly hot and not unusual for a day or 2 in July here.

User6286509 · 16/07/2022 21:43

DH had low tyre pressure on Thursday, he had to stop in a lay-by and pump it up, I have had the same happen in winter, it's best to carry a portable tyre pump then you don't have to queue.

SoftSheen · 16/07/2022 21:50

I wouldn't be driving anywhere unless it's absolutely essential (and if it is, take a lot of water with you in case you break down). Stay at home!

My tires were very worn and I was making them last as long as legally possible!

I took them Wednesday to get new ones as I suspected the heat would be the end of what was left and really didn't want a blow out!!!

I'm driving 4.5 hours next Friday and although it'll be cooler and tyres are new I think the tyre pump advice is really good and I'm going to look at them.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 16/07/2022 21:55

Unless the beach was 20-30 minutes drive I would not be going there.

BigDayToday · 16/07/2022 21:58

I live near the sea, in one of the slightly-less-hot areas, and will be staying in my house, or shaded garden at a push, during the day. Driving any distance in that weather just sounds horrible. I definitely wouldn't.

Palamon · 16/07/2022 22:00

I would if we weren't working.

My sister went to a Norfolk beach yesterday (staying the weekend) - she says it's bliss and not crowded.

ILoveMeSteakIDo · 16/07/2022 22:03

Met office says 27 degrees on Monday where i live right on the south coast. It's just 2 days where it's going to be quite hot. If you went to Spain you'd think nothing of going to the beach in 27 degree heat.

Somewhere like Cromer is only in the low 30s, its usually freezing there being on the corner so probably unusually pleasant in the next few days but it will be packed.

There was a 7 degree difference between home and Sheringham earlier in the week, that's about 45 minutes away, it was bliss but I certainly wont be going on Monday or Tuesday.

HaveToSaySomethingHere · 16/07/2022 22:35

I'm enjoying these very detailed plans some people have made for the day

Harridance · 16/07/2022 22:38

I think it would be lovely to go for a swim in the sea on a hot day

3luckystars · 16/07/2022 22:45

I can’t think of a worse idea. The air will be actually hot, like breathing in when you open the oven. Sun beating down and people everywhere. Ugh!!!!!!!

Auntpodder · 16/07/2022 23:13

If you’re in a city, any (nearby) museum is a top choice. The objects have to be kept at the same constant temp to prevent damage. A New York friend taught me that one in a heatwave.

cheninblanc · 16/07/2022 23:27

I assume you mean the blowy day where we had our roof come off and half the village without power for days. Yes you go to the beach!

RockandRollsuicide · 16/07/2022 23:49

What Happens if roads melt?

Our drive is not tarmac but something like it?

Will car tyres melt?

Will the cars start sinking into the road?
