To not understand the constant panic

I'm finding it so incredulous to see the level of panic and hysteria on here about a 2 day heatwave.
Posters seem to be hyping each other up. Can humans no longer cope with anything outside of their comfort zone?

I’m sat in the garden in lancashire in a hoodie and it’s bloody freezing 😂

saleorbouy · 15/07/2022 19:22

I know it's 48hrs of heat that the rest of the world frequently experiences and has been previously been experienced here particularly in 1976.
"Heat anxiety" is a new one on me, I suspect there will be "cold anxiety" when the weather turns too.
It seems some are only ever either complaining about the cold, the rain or the heat.
Having worked in the Gulf in +40'C I think I'll manage OK.

SueSaid · 15/07/2022 19:22

Hotnashsummerday · 15/07/2022 19:19

Completely agree! Where I live we constantly see these kinda temperatures in summer. Just get on with it but be sensible. Don't take your dogs for walks in the middle of the day, drink lots of water etc!

You just know we're going to see 'my dog is restless but it's 37c outside is it ok to pop to the park for a quick runaround I cba to get up at 6 when it was cool' 🙄

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 15/07/2022 19:23

50mg · 15/07/2022 19:17

I've always understood the "official" temperatures are taken/forecast in the shade?

some stations are literally atop of mountains, and buildings, so definitely not in shade for things like rainfall/snow. Maybe different stations measure different aspects of the weather??
I know that for it to be recorded as a definite record of weather, the reading has to come from an official station - not from any randoms garden weather station. Iyswim 🤣
anyway, weather can be fickle, like when it pours with rain in the village, but is bone dry less than 2 mins walk away. ..

pink85 · 15/07/2022 19:23

Its no fun for those of us who already can't cope in hot weather eg headaches feeling drained etc and having to work IN JEANS and a thick shirt as the uniform and on top of that somewhere that has no air conditioning and will be crammed full of idiot customers plus having to ask for permission to get a drink so yeah if its gonna be in the 30's I'm not panicking but I wanna be prepared

Thanks for your faux concern, I'm sure it will help all of us who have to work in the heat no end.

RoseAndRose · 15/07/2022 19:25

God, now it's a 'national emergency'. I bet Europe are pissing themselves laughing at us

Nope - quite a lot of Europe also has emergency heat warnings in place

And will be working with the knowledge of 72,000 excess deaths in the heatwave of 2003. This one is hotter

AtwilightRebellion · 15/07/2022 19:27

God, now it's a 'national emergency'. I bet Europe are pissing themselves laughing at us

Not as much as they are pissing themselves laughing over Brexit @JaniieJones

Siameasy · 15/07/2022 19:29

I know. These are the same people who are still fretting about Covid and wanting another lockdown.
we are pathetic as a nation. Bunch of babies

WinterMusings · 15/07/2022 19:29

PizzaPatel · 15/07/2022 17:48

I’d normally agree with you but my baby is so brand new I am a bit worried to be honest. Not just from a health perspective but wondering how I’ll entertain the older one at home as well as the newborn when our go to survival strategy is to get out of the house

paddling pool in the shade or bathtub if you don't have a paddling pool. Raid the kitchen for bowls sieves funnels bottles... anything plastic.

het some bubble mixture over the weekend, if you can afford it & can get to a shop bath chalk/ prate ship/ action man/super hero that can go in the bath.

get in with him & play for a while.

nappy off as much as possible read stories, watch cartoons, make ice pops over the weekend - let him eat as many as he wants.

if you can afford it - cucumber/strawberries/carrots/hommous to nibble.

damp tshirt

thankfully it's only two days xx

downscale versions for the baby!

it'll be fine xx

I’ve only seen histrionics about the weather on MN.

In rl, I’ve heard a couple of people say ‘it’s going to be hot next week’ - and that’s the extent of it 😂

We've talked about it at work but thats only because the local schools round here have decided to close, its not even that hot (and thats coming from someone who hates the heat over about 24 degrees).

Iliketeaagain · 15/07/2022 19:29

LargeBadSwanCollider · 15/07/2022 19:09

For those who are worried because they find the heat deeply unpleasant and will likely be uncomfortable for a few days, YANBU, although you might as well piss in the wind to expect Brits not to winge about the weather.

For those of us caring for frail older patients, those with chronic long term conditions particularly heart, lung and neurological disorders, people with dementia or severe learning disabilities, people who are totally reliant on others to eat, drink or move, we’ll yes I am deeply concerned. Add that into an ambulance and ED nightmare. Yup, going to be very very worried for the next few days.

Pretty much what I was going to say.. and there's talk of some local schools and nurseries shutting, which will add to already pressured staff trying to keep people safe at home.

Coupled with the RAC apparently saying that it may be that people shouldn't drive as there could be issues with roads melting - it's a major worry for vulnerable people who rely on various community services to keep them safe and healthy.

I'm absolutely dreading next week, the impact of 2 days of heat is likely to be felt in then health and social care system for much longer than 2 days.

Ponoka7 · 15/07/2022 19:29

@Clarabe1, what do you mean by 'the third world '? As said the houses are built to be cool. My Nigerian friends tell me that the women, children and elderly don't leave the house much, certainly not daily. Curtains and windows are kept closed. But more importantly you get acclimatised. If you hadn't noticed we look different depending on where we are from Anything built is built to withstand the temperature.

The point of the warnings are that our health and ambulance services are at rock bottom. So they want to stop people from adding to the usual numbers who will be fighting for those services.

FourTeaFallOut · 15/07/2022 19:29

Yeah, I'm sure they're not. In the same way nobody was pissing themselves last year when parts of Canada were trapped in a heat dome. Or when Texas was paralyzed by snow. Most people just sucked air between their teeth and hoped climate change would be kind to them.

ChickenBurgers · 15/07/2022 19:30

I’m not panicked personally. We’ll live. I am however dreading dragging all 3 kids (7, 2 and 6 months) plus 3yo niece around a theme park tomorrow. Wish we could just not go and just chill in the paddling pool in the garden, but the tickets have been prebooked and not at our expense as it was a gift so kind of have to. I’m grateful, but it’s gonna be a loooong day with the younger two 🙃

Royt453 · 15/07/2022 19:30

Also why do people keep going on about how "you pay good money for these kind of temps on holiday"

Because holiday is just like normal life isn't it? I'll just swan up to work in my bikini. When I get too hot I'll just jump in the pool or have a lay down in the shade. Oh wait ....

Eeksteek · 15/07/2022 19:30

newbiename · 15/07/2022 17:47

There's a few threads about it.

It’s not so much the practical how-to-manage-it side, but the tone of absolute hysteria over it. This kind of weather is an occasional hazard of not living in the arctic and no, it won’t be pleasant because we aren’t set up to cope with it. But it’s not a natural disaster. Other countries face it daily.

The thing I get miffed about is being in urged to check on elderly neighbours. And do what, exactly? Fan them? Do people not live to old age in other countries? Do they not having running water or openable windows or something? I mean, what can I actually do that they can’t?

I don’t like heat myself, but it’s not that big a deal if you are otherwise well. We will stay inside out of the sun and close curtains and windows as appropriate, wear very little, drink a lot and wait for it to pass. No biggie. As for ridiculously basic advice like not to exercise in the middle of the day. Really? I’d never have though of that all by myself.

Ilikewinter · 15/07/2022 19:32

but its all over by Wednesday .

RoseAndRose · 15/07/2022 19:32

I know it's 48hrs of heat that the rest of the world frequently experiences and has been previously been experienced here particularly in 1976

This is not true - temperatures could be 5 degrees higher than the 35 peak in 1976 (most of which was dry and sunny, but not over 28/30) They don't issue heat warnings unless they have a high degree of confidence in the modelling, and the Met Office was saying 50/50 that parts of the country will reach 40. And that's 40 measured at controlled sites, which measure the actual air temperature in the shade. It could be hotter in the full sun.

And the rest of the world isn't really relevant - different infrastructure and building standards

oatmilk4breakfast · 15/07/2022 19:33

It’s climate change. If we don’t do something soon the actual Earth becomes unliveable for our children.

WatermelonWaveclub · 15/07/2022 19:34

Georgeskitchen · 15/07/2022 18:25

People just need to use common sense, something that seems sadly lacking these days.
Wear loose fitting clothes. Stay indoors . Get an electric fan. Its not rocket science. Do what your cat or dog does in hot weather, find the coolest place in the house or garden and stay there.
I remember 1976, the months of red hot weather. None of the extreme panic, no schools shut, people actually went to WORK !!

Well, we've been having temperatures like 1976 and there's been no extreme panic, no schools shut and people have been going to work. The forecast for Monday and Tuesday is that it will be significantly hotter than 1976 so really not comparable.

RoseAndRose · 15/07/2022 19:35

Ilikewinter · 15/07/2022 19:32

This spike yes, but it drops back to 24/26 which is still pretty hot and could well stay 25+ for some time. So no-one's saying when it'll all be over.

Or have you seen actual models that go well below that?

It is predicted to be hotter than ever recorded. Level 4 warnings. Deaths predicted & not only for the elderly and vulnerable.

I'm not sure why you can't understand why some people are worried about it.

im not worried about it on a personal level, but I don't have to leave the house, my mum is overseas and I don't have a newborn. I can hang out in the coolest part of my house, I can go in the shoe et as many times as I fancy, I have a large frudge freezer, I can have ice, ive pops & I can put the fans on all day if I want to...

but not everyone can stay home & keep cool. If I had a child due to go on a hike/do sports day they'd be staying home. Day out would depend on the child/the destination.

if my mum was here I'd be checking in with her & bringing her over if she wanted to come.

I would be worrying if I was having to go to work, especially as a teacher/nurse/construction/gardener/chef....

not everyone can stay home.

Bunchymcbunchface · 15/07/2022 19:37

The British press love a bit of ‘muppet manipulation’ and whip up the hysteria.

hence panicked buying of 875 toilet rolls and 10kg of pasta during covid, oh and let’s not forget the recent ‘BP say fuel is running out’ headlines that caused the muppets to race out and fill vehicles to sit on the driveway, in case they couldn’t get to the supermarket for the big Saturday shop…….

Theoneinthemiddle · 15/07/2022 19:38

It is high but I’ve been in hotter. Honestly the panic was making me panic so thanks for this thread.

my tips

wet t shirt or vest to keep heart cool
personal fan
cap
glasses
suncream
don’t go out in the midday sun.
bottle of v cold water
