To not understand the constant panic

I'm finding it so incredulous to see the level of panic and hysteria on here about a 2 day heatwave.
Posters seem to be hyping each other up. Can humans no longer cope with anything outside of their comfort zone?

When I lived elsewhere in Europe (very popular holiday resort not somewhere obscure) , I had to monitor humidity closely due to a pet. Some evenings it could be sitting at 90% or more

theclangersarecoming · 17/07/2022 10:33

Currently in Spain, one of those countries people would think is used to the heat, there have been nearly 400 deaths, wildfires are raging out of control and it’s considered a national emergency. Heatwaves are not just dangerous to life but also cost the economy millions too. It’s not all “let’s get on with it, snowflakes” elsewhere!

bellac11 · 17/07/2022 10:49

There will be more deaths when its hot, just like there will be more deaths when its very cold, people do usually die of something

I hope people havent been starting fires, thats what I cant understand that reports from these fires are often arson.

It's also not a humid heat abroad.

I am truly astounded at the ignorance of some people. Do you seriously believe that the UK is the most humid place in the world? Shock

I really don't get this either. People who have never been abroad say it as well 🙄

liveforsummer · 17/07/2022 13:40

Yes an acquaintance of mine who dislikes the heat can often be heard convincingly stating 'it's a different heat abroad' which she couldn't possibly know, as the furthest she's ever travelled is the next county to the one she lives!

Womenandwomenfirst · 17/07/2022 14:35

It’s not humid at all today - not at all unpleasant in the shade.

some people’s idea of “abroad” is very odd. Like all those posters who claim that “Europeans love children.” Sure they do. Every single one. And they particularly love bratty British kids… [sceptical]

This ^it's completely different lazing next to the pool in your bikini. Not having to go to work. It's also not a humid heat abroad.

You are joking yeah? Of course there's a humidity heat abroad. At the moment it's 80% in the Cayman Islands. Clermont in Orlando Florida is 77%

bellac11 · 17/07/2022 15:34

Its 35% humidity on my little reader, which is very low.

User8394721 · 17/07/2022 15:57

Most people that would have died from heat or cold would have died from something else pretty soon anyway, you can't live forever

MayISuggestSomeThickCutSteakChipsToGoWithThat · 17/07/2022 16:00

What a horrible and damaging thing to say.
So many people ready to dismiss others worries and fears as the reaction of a 'snowflake'
Further damaging their mental health.
The Met office have said there is a risk to life. If that doesn't worry you, fine. Good for you! What a hero!
*But don't be horrible to those it worry. It's downright mean!
*
Hell will be much hotter so no it doesn't bother me! 😈 I'll just be making the most of it out in the garden. There's always a risk to life somewhere and not just because the met have issued a warning because it's going to be 'a bit' hotter for a couple of days. There's no pleasing some folks. Most people don't moan when they go pay hundreds to go abroad somewhere hot and sunny. Often in places with much a higher humidity. There's plenty of ways to keep cool over here too. Yet we have an above average temperature over here and the world might as well bloody end with all the hysteria. Next it'll be moan moan moan cos it's too cold, it's too windy, it's too wet, there's too much snow.

User8394721 · 17/07/2022 16:04

A lot of people have spent a lot of money and gone through the hell that is Heathrow or Manchester airport and likely lost their luggage to visit places which are very hot, they must be gutted missing the hot weather here

vivainsomnia · 17/07/2022 16:07

What I don't get is the stress that arises from anticipation.

Why not just prepared for the worse but just wait too see what it's like before panicking. It's common for weather forecasts to be much worse than it is in reality.

It's such wasted negative energy. I agree that with such dramatic anticipation, anxiety amongst young people is high.

JinCocktail · 17/07/2022 16:14

Yanbu. The snowflakes are going to melt, everyone else will just drink some extra water and get on with it, same as always.

ThickCutSteakChips · 17/07/2022 16:15

Perfect28 · 15/07/2022 18:17

I don't get people saying it's just two days of heatwave
Most of the country has been in a heatwave for a week already, these days are exceptional. There's also never been a red warning for heat. This is climate change, its real and accelerating

See, this is where the hyperbole gets me.

There has not been a 'heatwave for the last week'. I am in a part of the country that often sees the warmest weather, and in the red zone for the next couple of days. At work the other day we were outside and my colleague said to me, 'I don't want to say it, but I wouldn't mind it a degree or two warmer!' Up until yesterday it had just been totally pleasant! And after Tues, its set to go back to totally pleasant!

ThickCutSteakChips · 17/07/2022 16:16

Its actually been really nice today, and I don't really do the heat. Is that to do with the low humidity then?

I’m not sure it is for young people ime

But that’s just comparing them to what I see on here from some older people

MN in particular is full of snowflakes who can’t cope with anything outside of their little middle class perfectly ordered ecosystem

Never experienced an Aussie summer then?

Yes, that thing being grown women talking perfectly sensibly about suitable precautions for an extreme and potentially dangerous weather event.

Some people can't cope with it at all, and doggedly - despite all the actual evidence of the threads themselves - seek to characterise as ridiculours

Gilead · 17/07/2022 17:25

@heattreat , I can to some extent control the indoor temperature on an average day. Even if parts of my chair don’t overhear, it’ll be more sweaty and uncomfortable for me than for the average person.
Quite frankly, I find it ridiculous that people refuse to ignore warnings from medics, or use the slippery slope logical fallacy, nonsense such as ‘we’ll be in lockdown if they have their way’. Of course Someone’s Mum always knows better. Most people have no idea how intense heat can affect the body.

balalake · 17/07/2022 17:31

Many people I think have lost skills of planning and preparation. So panic at the unusual. Probably all the impacts and unexpected things with the pandemic increased this.

I think thishas an extra element to it because we don't know what we're planning for.

No one managing UK infrastructure has ever experienced what's forecast.

Hopefully, it's a fuss over nothing, but we don't know.

I have a 6 week old baby and an elderly dog so I am worried yes. Our house holds onto the heat despite all efforts.

An idea for DDog might be to put a towel(s) or sheet(s) in the freezer and then onto the floor so DDog can lie on it, switch out with another when DDog needs another cool down. Hope he and baby are ok through the heatwave.
