To not understand the constant panic

I'm finding it so incredulous to see the level of panic and hysteria on here about a 2 day heatwave.
Posters seem to be hyping each other up. Can humans no longer cope with anything outside of their comfort zone?

This spike yes, but it drops back to 24/26 which is still pretty hot and could well stay 25+ for some time. So no-one's saying when it'll all be over.

Or have you seen actual models that go well below that?

The BBC weather app shows temps at no higher than 21 degrees from Weds until 28th .... so yep where I live the heatwave is over by Wednesday

amitoooldforthisshit · 15/07/2022 19:40

all i know is that people in Qatar are probably pissing them selves laughing at what they see as winter temperatures

internetpersonme · 15/07/2022 19:40

DigitalGoat · 15/07/2022 19:13

My colleague told me in worried tones she has tickets for a Michael Buble concert right in the middle of the heatwave.

"It's going to be awful" she said.

Was all I could do not to say "And the heat won't help will it"

😂😂😂😂😂😂

VirginiaCreek · 15/07/2022 19:41

Totally agree OP. I’m sick of hearing the hysteria about it - I hate the heat too and I struggle - but it’s summer ffs

whenwillthemadnessend · 15/07/2022 19:42

@Eeksteek

"The thing I get miffed about is being in urged to check on elderly neighbours. And do what, exactly? Fan them? Do people not live to old age in other countries? Do they not having running water or openable windows or something? I mean, what can I actually do that they can’t?"

Arnt you the caring soul. God forbid you get old and frail one day.

Hopefully all the posters who are arguing that this is concern over climate change rather than out and out panic over 2 days of extreme high temps in some parts of the UK and Europe will finally pay more attention to how they can contribute less on a personal level to global warming. So something may come if it.

South coast here and its not forcast to be as hot as that post Wednesday, I prefer winter but 24-26 is just normal summer weather in the UK, nothing exceptional about that.

the80sweregreat · 15/07/2022 19:47

Maybe people like sports stars and celebrities royalty and politicians should lead by example over climate change too because while they all preach and do what they like means that people won't take it seriously either.

overitall1 · 15/07/2022 19:47

Those of us that are old are incredulous. I was taking my O levels in 1976. No concessions, and certainly no water bottles, just 'get on with it'. No the temperatures were quite as high as now, but it lasted 10 WEEKS, not a few bloody days! I think it was 32 degrees for 15 days or something. I live on the coast and the ladybirds were ridiculous- they were everywhere and as a moped rider getting a mouthful wasn't unusual. Confused I worked on a farm, how the hell I didn't get heat stroke I have no idea! Those were the days!

stratforduponavon · 15/07/2022 19:48

Some people love a good old froth up about something. I had to buy a fan many years ago and was 8 months pregnant. I was pushed and shoved at John Lewis when a delivery was expected.

People were getting hysterical.

Have people never gone abroad before? And before the "but they've air con" police come at me, when I go on holidays I don't tend to sit in an apartment under the air con, I'm out and about enjoying the sunshine. It's ridiculous that a bit of heat can cause such panic!

It's unusual to get 40 degrees abroad.

The hottest I've been is Cambodia and that was 37 degrees.

I bought two boxes of ice-lollies in Aldi.

My granddaughter was with me so we finshed up with two boxes of mini magnum and a box of lollies. I tried hard to convince her of the value of tea on a hot day.

MayISuggestSomeThickCutSteakChipsToGoWithThat · 15/07/2022 17:51

Yanbu. There's far too many snowflakes nowadays!!

What a horrible and damaging thing to say.
so many people ready to dismiss others’ worries and fears as the reaction of a ‘snowflake’
Further damaging their mental health.
The Met Office have said there is a risk to life. If that doesn’t worry you, fine. Good for you! What a hero!
But don’t be horrible to those who it does worry. It’s downright mean.

AuxArmesCitoyens · 15/07/2022 19:51

72,000 people died across Europe in the 2003 heatwave. But yeah, nothing to worry about, just a bit of hot weather 🙄

whenwillthemadnessend · 15/07/2022 19:51

I was in mainland Greece once during a 40 degree heatwave.

All I had the energy to do was walk 100 meters to the pool.

Beach was out of the question as that was 500 meters

The evening was the time everyone did stuff and shopped etc

It's was very uncomfortable and all I had to do was sit around drink and get in the pool.

Jovanka · 15/07/2022 19:53

I hate the heat. I do not cope well with anything over 25. So, I am not looking forward to Monday/Tuesday. But I have the luxury of working from home and our flat is quite cool. I won’t have to leave home if I don’t want to. My DP works outdoors. He doesn’t have any choice unless he goes off sick (which he won’t). I will be worried about him on Monday.

riesenrad · 15/07/2022 19:55

Not RTFT but a red weather alert is not hysteria.

I'm just shocked at how utterly unresiliant we have become or how terrified of life certain people are. It's hardly surprising so many kids have anxiety issues these days. It must be taught behaviour from parents surely

The Met Office has issued the warning. Maybe you can talk to them about "resilience" and what they have learnt from their parents. However, given that they are all adults and professionals, I suspect that they make their own decisions without running to mummy and daddy.

anyway, the heatwave won’t last long as I’ve bough the dog a cooling mat Grin

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 15/07/2022 19:55

Hmmm not sure the comparison to 2003 is at all helpful. That heatwave lasted a month. This is 48 hours of high temperatures followed by highs of 21 deg and rain (midlands). The length of the heatwave was what made it so impactful on life/crops/commerce.

riesenrad · 15/07/2022 19:57

Abroad does not = hot. There are plenty of places to visit that are pleasantly warm or even cool.

As for causing panic, I actually think heat is more dangerous than snow or strong winds. You can stay indoors and avoid the latter (as long as tree doesn't fall on your house) but you can't get away from extreme heat.

But we've had that weather for weeks now. And everyone has been getting on with it the same as 1976. Schools letting children wear P.E kit and reminding them to bring a hat and a water bottle when the temperature will be 40c (much hotter than 1976) is hardly going over the top!

BirmaBrite · 15/07/2022 19:57

all i know is that people in Qatar are probably pissing them selves laughing at what they see as winter temperatures

And yet the World cup has been moved to November, because it is too hot to hold the event in Qatar before then.

Seaweed42 · 15/07/2022 19:57

The issue is that if the temp outside is higher than the human body temp of 36.8 then there is a risk of overheating. Normal sweating won't work unless you are indoors in a cooler temperature.
A 10 minute walk to the local shop in 38 degrees of heat is very different to walking there in 27 degrees.

Panicnomore · 15/07/2022 19:57

So I've just got back from my Aldi shop and can confirm with a previous poster that the water panic buying has begun.
Apparently they ran out by 2pm. Also no magnums left 😥

I would agree, except that it's been over 25ish degrees for some time now and we've not seen rain for weeks. Everywhere is tinder-dry.
