To not understand the constant panic

I'm finding it so incredulous to see the level of panic and hysteria on here about a 2 day heatwave.
Posters seem to be hyping each other up. Can humans no longer cope with anything outside of their comfort zone?

I suggest you read the long and very sensible and informative threads in the 'weather' topic.

Panicnomore · 15/07/2022 17:58

I've already had a text from a mate uttering the dreaded... Stay Safe.🙄

It's not the people , it's the media
I heard two ads on lbc about it today
The news has it on constantly
The weather maps they show on tv and on my phone are bright red and scary looking.
It's making people stressed and although the tips on staying cool and safe are welcome , it's still worrying that people may need to go to hospital because of it.
I hate hot weather myself but I'm lucky I don't have to work in it.

Snoozysnoozy · 15/07/2022 17:59

Shitty clickbait. That's all it is. Lead by shouty social media types jumped on by wankers that write for papers (let's face it they're not journalists anymore).

Just be fucking sensible, drink plenty of water and don't go out during the hottest part of the day. Don't get smashed and fall asleep in the sun. Slap some sun cream on.

IGotItInTheSales · 15/07/2022 18:00

People love a bit of drama!

No covid to froth over anymore so the weather will have to do!

Daftasabroom · 15/07/2022 18:00

Hahaha this is nuts, how many of you have actually experienced 40C heat without Aircon? I worked in the Med for years and anything over mid thirties people are going to die. And you're okay with that?

Flaunch · 15/07/2022 18:02

Most people nowadays are absolute wusses

Daftasabroom · 15/07/2022 18:05

@Flaunch yeah I agree, particularly the elderly, very young, and vulnerable, they just need to pull their shit together. And when the inevitable floods come they just need to swim harder eh?

And there it is.... Of course I'm not OK with people dying. But am I supposed to give myself a nervous breakdown worrying constantly.

No. It's a Met office report on a heatwave emergency, and these are becoming increasingly likely because of climate change. I don't read much clickbait. I do read research papersall bloody day.

It's good that this one is short, yes. We can use it as a sort of practice run for the next, longer, hotter one.

I'm just shocked at how utterly unresiliant we have become or how terrified of life certain people are. It's hardly surprising so many kids have anxiety issues these days.
It must be taught behaviour from parents surely.

Yes I taught my DC how to be autistic just like me.

AuntieStella · 15/07/2022 18:07

I've nearly dislocated my retinas going through some of these 'my poor darling couldn't possibly cope in such hot weather camping, at an end of year theme park trip, at school'

They probably won't have to cope, as the parks will be deciding today whether they can safely remain open. They weren't built for temperatures pushing 40, and its bad enough when a railway line buckles, and that's on the ground. Just imagine that on a roller coaster

I've noticed a few running events being cancelled, and I'm glad that most people are being sensible and considering adaptations to plans. This isn't just a couple of hot days. It's a run of very hot days, including two where it could be unprecedentedly hot

feistyoneyouare · 15/07/2022 18:08

Some people are going to struggle more than others, or are at more risk than others, for all sorts of reasons. It's a bit dismissive to describe that as panic and hysteria.

Eatthecake80 · 15/07/2022 17:45

I could understand if it was for a prolonged period but it’s only 2 days then it’s rain an crap weather again!

It’s between 22 and 25 for the week afterward where I am with virtually no rain.

For the past few weeks it had been somewhere between 19 and 26 with virtually no rain.

onlywhenidream · 15/07/2022 18:10

Have you not got an operating mode between denial and nervous breakdown ?

It's going to be unusually hot , there will be lots of bad things that could happen but risks are minimised if people are aware and prepare in advance - that's why it's news - not so you panic but so you can engage your brain

the80sweregreat · 15/07/2022 18:10

The hospitals can't cope at any time it seems
With this on top I dread to think what might happen. Many respiratory problems for a lot of people due to the heat

miltonj · 15/07/2022 18:10

Yes I was amazed reading that thread. People love having something to panic over and chastise others for not being as worried as them. Just take a look at covid! It's a full time hobby.

meditrina · 15/07/2022 18:10

But am I supposed to give myself a nervous breakdown worrying constantly

Reductio ad absurdam - absolutely no-one's saying that people should panic. There does seem to be quite a determined attempt to undermine those who are saying 'be informed, plan accordingly, respect dangerous weather'

When my dc were at primary school in Australia, not only was there no air con in the classrooms but the roof was made of metal. And it was quite a new build school.

thenewduchessoflapland · 15/07/2022 18:12

I have a kid with who suffers from dysautonomia

(heat intolerance);it's caused by another medical condition they have, because of the high temps predicted where we are we're going away to the coast for a few days where it'll be much cooler than our city.

Daftasabroom · 15/07/2022 18:12

@Panicnomore no of course you don't NEED to give yourself a nervous breakdown, who has suggested you should?

Climate change is real and dangerous - thousands of people, over and above the seasonal average are going to die over the next few days. Let's hope you don't have any vulnerable relatives.

Panicnomore · 15/07/2022 18:13

Well OK then. If these heatwaves are being caused by climate change then we best prepare our kids for the planet conditions we have given them. The hypocrisy of those buying and using AC units is laughable. That's going to increase climate change!!!!

40 degrees is literally hot enough to melt tarmac.

Bully for you that you can sit in your hot tub for 2 days but maybe step outside your bubble and grow some empathy for the people such extreme weather puts at risk?

User2145738790 · 15/07/2022 18:13

Don't worry, everyone will be back to panicking over COVID and the war in Ukraine by Tuesday.
