To not understand the constant panic

I'm finding it so incredulous to see the level of panic and hysteria on here about a 2 day heatwave.
Posters seem to be hyping each other up. Can humans no longer cope with anything outside of their comfort zone?

I assume that you've not seen the (1961) film The Day the Earth Caught Fire'
Well I have...

... although I can't, for the live of me, remember what happens.

I know we stood up for the National Anthem at the end but that's it really.

I'm autistic and it's a sensory nightmare for me. I haven't been hysterical but this weather doesn't come without risk so it's not too strange to see others being concerned.

Im dreading it because I genuinely can't cope with anything outside of my comfort zone. It removes all my 'usual' abilities and makes the most basic tasks so much harder.

Ditto.

oh yes and our roads have been bubbling its so hot. so it's quite scary to walk outside and see your road track bubbling again. Not a tiny bit but quite a lot and on quite a few roads.

But...but... just get an ice pop and fix it.

the80sweregreat · 15/07/2022 19:12

I wish that climate change involved rain and cooler weather instead of this intense heat

'It is different on holiday usually isn't it? Air con, pools'

Air con? We went to ibiza and then the Greek Islands as students not an AC unit in sight in cheapo rooms. We were young and fit yes. I do get it that the old and vulnerable are at risk but it isn't them I hear panicking it's young fit people thinking we're heading into a national disaster. It's covid mark 2.

They might not have had air con but the buildings are designed to stay cool. In the UK they are designed to retain heat.

DigitalGoat · 15/07/2022 19:13

My colleague told me in worried tones she has tickets for a Michael Buble concert right in the middle of the heatwave.

"It's going to be awful" she said.

Was all I could do not to say "And the heat won't help will it"

the80sweregreat · 15/07/2022 19:13

I've stayed in hotels abroad with air con!
It makes a noise and keeps you awake , but hey ho

I’m so sick of hearing about it 🥱 It’s a bit of sun for two days. My mum’s been going on about it in ‘hushed tones’ like the Earth is about to explode. It’ll be snowing soon for all we know and we’ll be whinging about that!

This made me 😂Yep😂 I'm waiting for the next weather update to be possible risk of the Earth Exploding... with a very concerned face.

This is shitty thread full of I'm alright Jacks. 40 degrees working many jobs is going to be insufferable and lots of people won't be able to hack it. Lots of people live in totally unsuitable housing for this weather and will have no escape from the heat. I've changed my travel plans because the train lines will certainly buckle. This isn't nothing.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 15/07/2022 19:15

Our Outside thermometer has often recorded high 30s temps and a one or two 45deg heats in the garden - in full sun. So we do have these temperatures in the uk (midlands). They aren’t reported because they aren’t detected by the reporting weather stations. I’m sure other people will have seen local anomalies too. But they are brief in this country lasting only a day or two.

FourTeaFallOut · 15/07/2022 19:16

Most people will be uncomfortable but fine, others will struggle and, inevitably as in all heatwaves, some will die. If things fall in our favour, there won't be any uncontrollable fires and power supplies will remain but, of course, it's never had to operate in the expected temperatures. And the ambulance service, which is already on its arse, will operate in a functional manner.

You don't get stoic points for being lucky enough to be healthy and robust enough to be fine in this heatwave. And you don't get bravery points for minimising the real concerns of potential disruption.

What is makes you is incredibly myopic. I wouldn't boast about it.

I've always understood the "official" temperatures are taken/forecast in the shade?

I've already had a text from a mate uttering the dreaded... Stay Safe.🙄

I literally feel murderous when I see that phrase.

Its not safe to tell me to 'stay safe'

We're in the south east, its 22 right now, highs of 20 tomorrow, 22 on Sunday, 29 on Monday, 29 on Tuesday.

I hate the heat but I dont think things should close down or schools shut.

SueSaid · 15/07/2022 19:18

'oh yes and our roads have been bubbling its so hot'
We used to play with melted tar in the roads with sticks when we were kids. I really think it will have been this hot in the past at some point.

User5386509 · 15/07/2022 19:19

I'm sure people will be expecting Amazon to deliver their last minute paddling pools on Monday while they are cooling off at home, not dissimilar to what happened with Covid really.

iklboo · 15/07/2022 19:19

Probably going to get flamed

Well you will on Monday & Tuesday 😄

Hotnashsummerday · 15/07/2022 19:19

Completely agree! Where I live we constantly see these kinda temperatures in summer. Just get on with it but be sensible. Don't take your dogs for walks in the middle of the day, drink lots of water etc!

Daftasabroom · 15/07/2022 19:20

@Panicnomore as climate change progresses weather patterns are becoming more extreme and lasting longer. In the UK this is moderated by our maritime climate , but as posted upthread we are approaching some massive turning points.

Look after your vulnerable rellies next week (my parents are knobs!)

Royt453 · 15/07/2022 19:20

YABU. I think it's quite unkind to make fun of people for worrying. People are concerned for a reason.

I work in a special needs school, every classroom has a wall of windows. It's already been swelteringly hot this week at 25 degrees, to the point I have felt quite faint and been drenched in sweat. The children have struggled, many have been very distressed by the heat. As they have disabilities, it's especially difficult for them. I'm worried about the children getting heat stroke, I'm worried about myself getting a pounding migraine and struggling to work. I'm also worried for the state of the NHS - ambulances and A&E departments are already on their knees, two days of baking heat is going to result in lives lost. No, maybe not mine - but isn't it selfish to think "well I won't die so I won't worry?"

Maybe you are a naturally calm person with no anxiety issues - how nice for you. Not all of us are. Some of us find extreme discomfort difficult to cope with. No need for all the patronising "snowflake" talk on here.

Also anyone on this thread who has made light of others worrying about covid - shame on you. Hundreds of thousands died. Apparently it's pathetic to worry about a virus that caused mass deaths. I despair at Mumsnet sometimes.

theclangersarecoming · 15/07/2022 19:21

eg. I was in northern France during the 2003 heatwave of 40-41 degree temps. It was pretty grim. The figures were that between 14,000 and 15,000 people died purely because of the heat. It also had far reaching impacts on crops, wildfires and the economy across Europe.

It made me laugh the way people are going on, we pay good money to go on holiday and enjoy such lovely weather. I'm really looking forward to getting the paddling pool out, the past few times I've got it out my child have complained the water was too cold and spent approx 5min in it as the air temp was only 20 odd. High 30s they might actually go in it 😆. I will say I will put the gazebo over the pool and they have full sun suits, I love the sunny weather but I am very careful whether we are in this country or abroad when it comes to covering them up and smothering them in sun tan lotion.

I went backpacking in my 20s and visited some vv hot places, Alice springs in Australia was hot hot, I'm very fair, I simply stayed in the shade and drank lots (of water, although alcohol was also consumed of an evening!). I didn't melt staying in these hot places, in fact I enjoyed the weather. You'll find me in my garden enjoying the weather the next few days (and pretending to wfh).
