To not understand the constant panic

Panicnomore · 15/07/2022 17:42

I'm finding it so incredulous to see the level of panic and hysteria on here about a 2 day heatwave.
Posters seem to be hyping each other up. Can humans no longer cope with anything outside of their comfort zone?

When you say panicking, do you mean panicking oh my god help help running round in circles... Or do you mean being aware, planning, reading what the met office has to say about this red alert and the extreme heat warning they've issued etc?

Because I'm not seeing much in the way of panic tbh. Talking about something, deciding what you're going to do, having a moan about it cos you hate the bloody heat - none of those things are panic.

Yanbu. There's far too many snowflakes nowadays!!

At least the heatwave should get rid of the snowflakes!

ABBAsnumberonefan · 15/07/2022 18:37

But why is it bothering you so much?? Ffs some people might be worried - the heat will have a risk to life for some. Let them talk about it in peace, it’s hardly causing you any harm is it Jesus

Daftasabroom · 15/07/2022 18:38

@Georgeskitchen the next few days are going to be 5C to 10C higher that 1976. 10C is the difference between a cold beer and a warm beer.

Kant · 15/07/2022 18:39

There really is no way to use the term 'snowflake/s' without sounding like an intolerant, mindless, bigoted arsehole, is there?

mbosnz · 15/07/2022 18:39

I don't think there is cause for panic, but there is cause for concern.

So, I'd far rather plan and act for worst case scenario, than for the best, because that's not always what you get.

Having lived through a National Emergency or two.

Manekinek0 · 15/07/2022 18:40

It's the usual suspects, moaning and patronising everyone who says that we will just have to get on with it. Same as with covid, there are those who have the choice and the rest of us who don't.

I would love to take two days off, keep the DC home, fill the paddling pools and eat ice creams all day. But I have to work, in a kitchen with no air con and none of the bloody windows open either due to fire regs.

Oh and I know to drink plenty of water, take breaks etc, I'm not a child, so stick your stupid advice because we don't need to hear it.

User5386509 · 15/07/2022 18:40

MSM will be very disappointed if it doesn't hit 40, I suspect

JudgeJ · 15/07/2022 18:41

A580Hojas · 15/07/2022 18:31

Yanbu. I am tired of the heatwave threads. We had days when it reached 37, 38, 39 degrees in recent years. Keep your curtains or shutters closed. Go out early or late if you have the option, or not at all. Drink enough water or cold drinks or tea if you prefer. Stop whipping people up into a frenzy.

I'm only surprised that the media haven't resorted to the Fahrenheit scale, sounds far more dramatic, 35 degrees sounds far cooler than 95!

CapMarvel · 15/07/2022 18:42

Marmite27 · 15/07/2022 18:32

several weeks in Turkey with +40 temps with no air conditioning in a boiling hot apartment with no outdoor space or swimming pool as it was a building site.

There wasn’t people dying all over the place. Hmm

...because they were used to the temperatures and as a matter of course took the kind of measures being recommended.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 15/07/2022 18:43

I’m in NE Scotland so we aren’t affected, but I work in a school (already broke up).

if I was supposed to be in school at the predicted temperatures I would be quite anxious. I’m overweight and very fair skinned and definitely not one for “we’ll all just go to the park/playground/playing field “ and I’d definitely not want to be one of the people looking after the welfare, sunscreen, hydration and comfort of a class of up to 33 under 12s

Somethingneedstochange · 15/07/2022 18:43

Exactly this I have a number of people in my family vulnerable. I'm now sat in A&E with my daughter because of the heat and to top it all the doctors hadn't done her repeat prescription I ordered and had to get an emergency script. There's multiple elderly here in corridors.

AhaLyn · 15/07/2022 18:43

Getting really bored of these threads now.

Daftasabroom · 15/07/2022 18:44

@Sarahthecactus 40C is extreme by even Med standards, beyond that the UK really isn't ready for this.

AhaLyn · 15/07/2022 18:45

@Panicnomore People are right to be concerned. Do you think the met office dole out warnings for shits and giggles?

I’m not great in heat due to a heart condition but I’m not panicking but I’m not exactly relishing it and appreciate the heads up to you know, not to run about in 106

mbosnz · 15/07/2022 18:45

I really do feel for the people who have no choice but to work, particularly when they are outside, and with little or no leeway given as a result of the environmental conditions. Hopefully people will cut them some slack if they have the temerity to rattle the bins, or mow the verge, at a time earlier than they would prefer.

RainydaysandFridays · 15/07/2022 18:45

YANBU. It’s bloody ridiculous. Are we going to panic buy loo rolls next?

JudgeJ · 15/07/2022 18:46

Georgeskitchen · 15/07/2022 18:25

People just need to use common sense, something that seems sadly lacking these days.
Wear loose fitting clothes. Stay indoors . Get an electric fan. Its not rocket science. Do what your cat or dog does in hot weather, find the coolest place in the house or garden and stay there.
I remember 1976, the months of red hot weather. None of the extreme panic, no schools shut, people actually went to WORK !!

I too recall '76, we were living in a Med country and my parents were visiting, they were glad of the Summer thunderstorms we had!

Daftasabroom · 15/07/2022 18:47

Panicnomore · 15/07/2022 18:29

The point I am trying to make is we are being told this is our new Reality. Extreme weather. It will continue to happen every year and probably get hotter and hotter and wetter and wetter and windier and windier etc.
We have done this to our planet. We now reep what we sow.

Surely our coping strategies need to adjust... otherwise people will live in a constant state of fear.

Yes this is the new reality, we need to stop burning fossil fuels. And if you don't wake up to that reality you're screwed.

Roselilly36 · 15/07/2022 18:47

YANBU just ridiculous, scaremongering yet again.

twilightermummy · 15/07/2022 18:49

Yanbu. I’m sick of this replaying over and over in the media when it’s just 2 bloody days. I just wish we had more predictable weather in this country, as in summer is actually warm and winter had some decent snow. Come August when the poor kids are off you can guarantee it will be shit. I digress anyway! Completely agree though, it’s pathetic.

SueSaid · 15/07/2022 18:51

'I'm just shocked at how utterly unresiliant we have become or how terrified of life certain people are. It's hardly surprising so many kids have anxiety issues these days. It must be taught behaviour from parents surely.'

Yes it's all a bit crazy isn't it. I'm just waiting for the media to utter the dreaded 'possible water shortage' warnings and we'll have folk queuing round Tescos carpark for bottler water.

It's going to be hot for a couple of days so stay indoors, in the shade, drink plenty then be ready to complain about the crap weather the week after Grin.

GuineaPigPosie · 15/07/2022 18:51

I am autistic, and it is a sensory nightmare. I have asthma, and this weather triggers asthma attacks that hospitalise me. I have a neurological brain condition with symptoms that worsen in this weather, causing pain, but I also take medication for this that makes me much more susceptible to heat stroke and sun burn.

I also work in childcare, and on Monday and Tuesday I need to work out how to keep a room of 30 2-4 year old children cool, entertained and safe. They cannot do their usual activities and they cannot regulate their own heat. So yes, I am worried.

You're not the only person who exists in the world, OP.

WTFGG · 15/07/2022 18:52

Try having a child with complex health needs then come back to me about whether it’s all hysteria!!

maddiemookins16mum · 15/07/2022 18:53

I bought two boxes of ice-lollies in Aldi.
