To not understand the constant panic

I'm finding it so incredulous to see the level of panic and hysteria on here about a 2 day heatwave.
Posters seem to be hyping each other up. Can humans no longer cope with anything outside of their comfort zone?

Leave earlier so you can walk more slowly and walk in the shade wherever possible. Take water, wear a wide brimmed hat. Use an umbrella for extra shade.

Takingthepmaybe · 15/07/2022 18:14

It’s a genuine threat to life. That’s quite serious.

I won’t be remotely impacted by it. But I live in a delightul
cool apartment. Work from home. And will be able to take my dog out for a lovely walk by the sea super early.

howeve I can recognize that for actually quite a few people this will be a major issue and for some life threatening.

all that your showing is that you are insular and lack empathy.

AllKnowingGerbil · 15/07/2022 18:14

Yanbu. I much prefer snow hysteria, I can get on board with that. But two days of hot weather? Eh? Buy some ice pops.

User5386509 · 15/07/2022 18:15

Mumsnet will combust on Monday with all the panic, it's like Covid so much panic and drama

Daftasabroom · 15/07/2022 18:16

@onlywhenidream if there was a like function I would double like your post😏

flowerycurtain · 15/07/2022 18:17

@MuffinMcLayLikeABundleOfHay (love your username by the way!!) that made me smile.

it does frustrate me how sanitised and unresiliant we all are now. I do get that it's going to be ridiculously hot and it will be dangerous for some. But all of these people who can wfh with a cold flannel on their face are so far removed from the coal face of life it can rankle a little.

On Monday and Tuesday my staff and I will still have to walk our hens, collect our eggs, check our cattle. You can't air condition livestock sheds and it's hot itchy dusty work at 20 degrees let alone 30. We can provide drinks, ice cream and a dunk of the head in a water trough but that's it.

Then there's the risk of fire - the balers are out already and it only takes one tiny spark from a stone to cause field fires of scary proportions.

Perfect28 · 15/07/2022 18:17

I don't get people saying it's just two days of heatwave
Most of the country has been in a heatwave for a week already, these days are exceptional. There's also never been a red warning for heat. This is climate change, its real and accelerating

49er · 15/07/2022 18:18

It's exactly the same when snow comes. Were really bad at any "extreme" weatherHmm. The definition of extreme being anything below 0 and above 30 degrees and anything more than rain.

PizzaPatel · 15/07/2022 17:48

I’d normally agree with you but my baby is so brand new I am a bit worried to be honest. Not just from a health perspective but wondering how I’ll entertain the older one at home as well as the newborn when our go to survival strategy is to get out of the house

If baby is awake early then go out early with both . Relax at home for the rest of the day

darkdaysareover · 15/07/2022 18:19

YANBU. I doubt the vulnerable will suddenly decide to take up marathon running in the midday sun or extreme sunbathing. It will be uncomfortable but survivable. A lot of us will be heading to a beach to embrace it.

PupInAPram · 15/07/2022 18:19

It's the lack of sleep that will get me. I work in a school in a red zone and students are being allowed to leave blazers and ties at home and bring plastic bottles for water.

Applegreenb · 15/07/2022 18:19

I’ve found it’s like marmite, you are either a summer person and not understanding the issue or a winter person and your panicking.

i hate the summer, I don’t like being warm and anything above 24C I really start to feel it. I tend to feel sick / I am sick if I get too warm. My OH loves the heat and doesn’t have the same reaction as me.

Im dreading the next few days but silver lining is I might be a bit lighter due to not eating as I feel
sick 🤣

Panicnomore · 15/07/2022 18:19

@Daftasabroom you haven't answered the AC question. Can you not see the hypocrisy when that will help to speed up climate change.

I agree, OP, it's totally ridiculous.

VincaBlue · 15/07/2022 18:21

Panicnomore · 15/07/2022 18:05

And there it is.... Of course I'm not OK with people dying. But am I supposed to give myself a nervous breakdown worrying constantly.

It seems you're getting more stressed about other people's reactions to the red warning than the people concerned about it. Could you have a break from mumsnet/social media for a bit?

FortonServices · 15/07/2022 18:21

Daftasabroom · 15/07/2022 18:00

Hahaha this is nuts, how many of you have actually experienced 40C heat without Aircon? I worked in the Med for years and anything over mid thirties people are going to die. And you're okay with that?

I have. Australia in January 🔥. It was horrendous. Too hot and heavy to even go to the beach. We spent the day in an air conditioned cinema and shopping mall. Cooler at night but still disrupted sleep.

MustBeThin · 15/07/2022 18:22

I despise the heat but the reason I'm worried this time is because of my DDog. She's 12 and has a bad heart, she's generally doing ok with her meds and most of the time you wouldn't know there's anything wrong with her but the heat is a massive concern.
The vet warned me about it months ago, she's had a couple of dodgy nights when it's been hot that I've managed with medication an cooling her down. These few days might be the difference in me being able to keep her for a while longer or having her pts. 😢

NumberTheory · 15/07/2022 18:23

I agree that panic is utterly pointless. But it’s also something where actions taken will make the difference for some people between health and sickness. People who are vulnerable can’t just “Be resilient” and avoid negative outcomes. And even for people who aren’t vulnerable, going about daily activities may not be sensible depending on what their daily activities are. Underplaying the need for sensible precautions is as bad as panicking.

WiddlinDiddlin · 15/07/2022 18:23

It is likely to mean im in a lot of pain as my hands and feet and legs swell, it means my risk of a heart attack are significantly increased and at best, I am going to be extremely uncomfortable (sensory issues as well as the heart issue) for several days.

Excuse me if I am a little concerned about how I cope in my horribly hot little house!

Thegreatestshowoff · 15/07/2022 18:24

It’s ridiculous. Medical issues aside, too many people are way too snowflakey these days. I’ve lived all over the world, including in countries where the temperature routinely went above 40C. Some places hqd aircon, others didn’t. You adapt accordingly
and anyone with a bit of common sense would do just that. As a PP said, buy some icepops 🤣

BoilingOil · 15/07/2022 18:24

I've been to Australia a couple of times. Left the UK in the winter (temps of 0 or -1), and arrived to a minimum of 34 degrees. Hottest day I experienced was 48. It was do-able. But then again, their public spaces and workplaces are set up with aircon.

Now I'm having hot flushes so no idea if it's the heat or me!

Georgeskitchen · 15/07/2022 18:25

People just need to use common sense, something that seems sadly lacking these days.
Wear loose fitting clothes. Stay indoors . Get an electric fan. Its not rocket science. Do what your cat or dog does in hot weather, find the coolest place in the house or garden and stay there.
I remember 1976, the months of red hot weather. None of the extreme panic, no schools shut, people actually went to WORK !!

WimbyAce · 15/07/2022 18:25

I think some people just love a crisis and the drama. Has been hot here for the last week or so and it's just gonna be a bit hotter by the looks mon/Tues. Just need to be sensible really and try to keep as cool as poss.

CapMarvel · 15/07/2022 18:26

Who is panicking? All I have heard is pretty sensible advice aimed at keeping people safe. You can absolutely bet that a&e's are going to be full of utter morons who have ignored the advice

40 degrees is insanely hot and the uk, unlike countries more used to the heat, is not set up to deal with it.
