To not understand the constant panic

I'm finding it so incredulous to see the level of panic and hysteria on here about a 2 day heatwave.
Posters seem to be hyping each other up. Can humans no longer cope with anything outside of their comfort zone?

Hahaha this is nuts, how many of you have actually experienced 40C heat without Aircon?

Me. Actually, 46 degrees indoors. Nobody died.

your username 🤣🤣 I need to read that thread again!

The thread was hidden last I saw. It might be zapped by now 😢

Oestrogelsmuggler · 15/07/2022 20:48

I'm ginger and I'm not remotely worried. Just stay hydrated, and remember next week it'll be cold and raining.

Theluggage15 · 15/07/2022 20:49

It’s hilarious OP. And loads of ‘Britain is completely different from any other country in the world, no other country has things as bad, people just don’t understand ‘ blah blah blah!

TrashPandas · 15/07/2022 20:50

The smuggery in these threads is so annoying. Why do people need to feel morally superior over amoral things?

In winter we have the smugs who don't feel the cold acting like they're morally superior to people who turn the heating on. In summer we have the smugs who love heat acting like they're superior to those who hate it.

As I said on the other post. I’m on the south coast and predictions where I am is 30 Monday and 31 Tuesday. Where is it going to be 37?

London, midlands, EA, further up North

To not understand the constant panic
EV117 · 15/07/2022 20:51

I don’t get the panic either. I understand the need for caution - planning to send children home at lunchtime if parents can accommodate that on Monday is a sensible precaution, encouraging people, especially those who are vulnerable, to be safe etc. But for some reason in this country caution and preparation, whether it be for heat, snow or wind seems to go hand in hand with hysteria and sensationalism. I also don’t understand the hype of ‘possible hottest temperature recorded’ on the news, the key word being ‘possible’ (I think 50/50 chance they’re saying). If it happens, then on Monday evening it will be newsworthy. Otherwise it’s currently non-news and not worth the constant news coverage.

yes just tell the butler to put extra ice in the G&T - Mummy should be fine in the care home in Scotland- and if not well it's inheritance time!

Runaround50 · 15/07/2022 20:52

@fuckboris I work in a SEN school too. The kids will hate the heat and many will get distressed.

I bloody hate these inconsiderate patronising arses who think people are worrying for nothing!

Gilead · 15/07/2022 20:52

I’m a wheelchair user, it will indescribably uncomfortable, the metal bits on my chair will be too hot to touch, plastic bits the same, the nylon cushions will cause sweat rash. But yeah, it’s a fuss about nothing.

MorganKitten · 15/07/2022 20:53

The nursery I work at is staying open, 100 children in that heat? We can’t leave the rooms but must stay open as parents will kick off if we don’t open.

Readyourownbookmoira · 15/07/2022 20:53

If people are worried about ‘literally dying” then put a portable air con unit on Klarma. Surely £180 over 12 months is worth it if the other option is certain death. I’m being a bit flippant, sure if you’re vulnerable then take precautions. As a healthy 40 something I’ll still be commuting on the tube, just as I was in 2003 in the same heat. This time next year people will be calling for hot weather lock downs to protect the NHS and the same old names will be writing “stay the fuck at home, how hard is it to think about the vulnerable”

Kant · 15/07/2022 20:54

When the fuck did we become such cunts

12 years ago? Ish? Accelerated in the last 5 years.

I'd like to say we've peaked, but I bet we fucking haven't.

Lindy2 · 15/07/2022 20:54

I'm in an area predicted to be hotter than Satan's armpit. I'm not looking forward to it but I'm not panicking.

I'm pissed off that the ridiculously hot temperatures are probably going to spoil a special school event however, it's only 2 days and I'm capable of acting sensibly to keep safe and to not over heat.

Trying to sleep on Monday night though is likely to be pretty grim.

Ok, playing devils advocate, does this happen when indoors? Or is it when you're outdoors?

Fizbosshoes · 15/07/2022 20:58

I feel sorry staff in hospitals - as if the system isn't hanging by a thread already.

The Met Office have put out the warning saying there is risk to life. That's not individuals being snowflakes.
Babies, young children, elderly and vulnerable can become dehydrated or suffer from heat stroke.
People working outside and inside without adequate ventilation or cooling will suffer.
Domestic violence is more prevalent in hot weather

I wouldn’t be confident about the Tube service on Monday. I just came through Liverpool Street and there were signs up saying there would be reduced services.
Btw 2000 people in the U.K. died because of the 2003 heatwave so lucky you for being ok.

noirchatsdeux · 15/07/2022 20:59

I'm Australian so you Brits are making me laugh a lot right now.

Okaaaay · 15/07/2022 21:00

I kinda get the hype. Late 30s / early 40s is exceptional - it’s not just a 30 degree sunny day. I don’t think a lot of people (particularly in the north) will have experienced 37 degrees before. It has a significant negative impact on the healthcare system (both in terms of patient numbers and poor staff working in sweltering conditions usually in poorly ventilated estate), it means CT/ MRI scanners, operating theatres etc can’t run because the equipment / cooling devices can’t deal with the extreme heat. It has a big impact on vulnerable people - the very old and very young and can be dangerous to both. It’s horrible for anyone commuting in London (in particular). I wouldn’t have thought it possible to work outside in the temperature at the height of the day so massively affects all those people. For the rest of us it’s uncomfortable, but for the 5m or so people the above applies to, it’s really horrible and sometimes dangerous. So I don’t think we need to be hysterical but I do think we need to plan.

StationaryMagpie · 15/07/2022 21:00

oooh, are we playing top trumps?

I have a brother who works as a welder, he has to work with molten metal.. you know what happens when you work with a furnace when its cold out? you get hot.. you know what happens when you work with a furnace in hot weather? you get heat stroke!

Be glad you can sit indoors with an ice lolly and a cold flannel and not panic.. not everyone is in the same boat.

Yanbu. There's far too many snowflakes nowadays!!

That's the problem, there aren't actually. Global warming.

Record heatwaves in June and July caused the deaths of 1,435 people in France this year [2019] , according to the country's health minister.

Speaking on French radio, Agnès Buzyn said half of those who died were aged over 75.

But Ms Buzyn said, thanks to preventative measures, the rate was 10 times lower than the same period in 2003 when a deadly heatwave hit Europe.

France recorded its highest-ever temperature of 46C (114.8F) in June.

SquirmOfEels · 15/07/2022 21:02

I’ll still be commuting on the tube, just as I was in 2003 in the same heat*

It's forecast to be hotter than 2003

And as the tube can be as much as 10 degrees hotter than the outside ait temperature, I really wouldn't fancy being down there

Is there actually a temperature when it becomes unsafe on some lines?

Just wondering if people might need to have fall-back plans for their journeys

Do you think people who have to resort to foodbanks to feed their kids and are shoplifting formula have £180 to spare over 12 months?

Readyourownbookmoira · 15/07/2022 21:03

@TuftyMarmoset not lucky, how many of those that died in 2003 were healthy 23 year olds. Surely most were very frail old people already dehydrated in hospital or care homes.
Same narrative as Covid, pretending everyone is at huge risk when in reality it’s people who are already not in great shape to ramp up the fear and justify the hysteria.
