To not understand the constant panic

I'm finding it so incredulous to see the level of panic and hysteria on here about a 2 day heatwave.
Posters seem to be hyping each other up. Can humans no longer cope with anything outside of their comfort zone?

I have just ordered a new portable aircon for our bedroom. The old one is fine but starting to feel sorry for DS who is just about coping with a fan.
Our house stays cool downstairs but as we all know hot air rises so worth the investment of aircon for upstairs.
I will be at work on the hottest day where we have full air conditioning.
With gas prices so high we are considering putting in fixed aircon with heat exchangers. I haven’t done the maths yet.
DH had a stroke recently so I’m a little concerned and don’t want him overheating.

@bellac11

They do. Spanish schools either run from 9-5 with a three hour lunch break or 8-2. And they break up for Summer in mid June- hence why all the European visitors have already arrived in my tourist town.

Britain has some of the shortest Summer holidays in Europe. By the time it is super hot the kids in Italy, Greece and Spain have broken up from school!

Except for the ones I know of and saw.

So not ALL shops, offices and schools then.

Primatrying · 15/07/2022 20:38

Depends how humid it is surely. I've experienced 40 deg dry heat which was ok. I've experienced 40 deg with high humidity and I could not tolerant being away from air conditioning for more than five minutes. Impossible to be outside. I've also experienced 49 deg dry heat which was deceptive - I thought it was fine, but then nearly passed out.

That's mumsnet for you though, some of them haven't been this excited since lockdown.

Panic is the default MN setting for any out of the ordinary situation. Remember, they're the first people in the history of mankind to experience whatever it is, and I make no apology for the use of 'mankind', I'm far too mature/old to get involved in petty nonsense!

etulosba · 15/07/2022 20:38

Worse than anyone else?

Doubt it!

She might. I’m not going to suffer at all.

Quia · 15/07/2022 20:40

You may be finding it incredible, but not incredulous.

I'm sure everyone can manage for two days.....

No, not everyone will cope for two days. Thousands of people are expected to die as a result of the heat. Widespread illness is expected, not limited to the vulnerable.

AnybodyAnywhere · 15/07/2022 20:40

Readyourownbookmoira · 15/07/2022 20:16

@AnybodyAnywhere Its not that you, on a personal level feeling worried about the heat is offensive. It’s that the media hysteria is just boring now. Two years of being frightened by the TV has sent people bananas. If you think it’s dangerous for you to work just pretend you’ve got covid or say you can’t work in the heat. Just stop policing people saying we’re fed up with the drama.

I’m not ‘policing’ you or anybody else..I’m simply pointing out that there may be valid reasons why some people are worried.

wheresmymojo · 15/07/2022 20:41

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 15/07/2022 20:09

@riesenrad the rain shortage has been ongoing since very early last year - nearly 18 months of not enough rain. Now that IS something to be very worried about. Yet the authorities and media aren’t and certainly not in anyway to the same degree as they are about next week’s temperatures. These temperatures we’ve currently experienced so far, are quite normal. Mid 20s for no more than a day or two, only a fortnight of temperature in the early 20s. Yet we’ve a media frenzy regarding TWO days of high 30s temperatures. (The 2003 European heatwave was in the low to mid 40s). Not really comparable ..

I don't know where you live but it's been hotter than that here.

It's been mid-20s and above for about 1.5 weeks, is going up to 40 and then back to mid-20s for at least another week.

There's a short spell of rain predicted on one day in the next 10 days and we haven't seen rain here for 10 days already.

schnubbins · 15/07/2022 20:42

My kids went to school in minus 25 and plus 35 degrees in Central Europe .They are still alive

HailAdrian · 15/07/2022 20:42

Here we go, a wonderful example of the scaremongering OP spoke about.

DecemberGal · 15/07/2022 20:42

I suppose I get the vulnerable tag as blood pressure is in the danger zone.Dr has changed tablets and it is a little better. I have a home blood pressure monitor I keep curtains & blinds closed on our large bay windows. We also have several cooling tower fans where you add water and ice packs.
some family members are going to the footy on Monday. Good luck to them

heattreat · 15/07/2022 20:42

@TuftyMarmoset could you link the information for that please?

We've been warned?
The vulnerable are aware and make provision?
The heat is short lived, two days?

So thousands will die? How?

Thewomeninthemirror · 15/07/2022 20:43

There must be many necklaces wearing through with all the clutching going on!

As I said on the other post. I’m on the south coast and predictions where I am is 30 Monday and 31 Tuesday. Where is it going to be 37?

It’s not scaremongering. It’s being realistic. Multiple experts are quoted on the deaths in this article www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/jul/15/heat-emergency-declared-in-england-as-temperature-expected-to-hit-40c
and the sickness part is a quote from the Met Office weather warning.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 15/07/2022 20:46

@wheresmymojo The East midlands. Forecast is a potential highest of 36deg. No real rainfall to make a real difference to reservoirs etc for 18 months. Now I could understand worries over that, but TWO days of heat isn’t worth this media frenzy. Would love some prolonged (like a month or two) or nice gentle rain. (No downpours - if I’m getting to choose) Maybe they need to appoint a minister for rain…

onlythreenow · 15/07/2022 20:46

Hahaha this is nuts, how many of you have actually experienced 40C heat without Aircon?

I have. It was really no different to any other hot temp in summer - and I was walking in it for a while too. Where I live is not a hot country, although we do have hotter summer weather than the UK usually, but 40C is still rare, and yet we somehow manage to cope without all the hysteria that has been on MN lately. My father, in his late eighties, has an apartment which gets the sun all afternoon and even he managed with just a fan.

Runaround50 · 15/07/2022 20:46

Well I will be working in a hot school with SEN kids, cooking!! I hate heat and so do many of them. Plus I have to do taxi duty on a hot car park.

Also, think of the poor people who are working in full PPE still or in hot busy environments.

antifascist · 15/07/2022 20:47

It's just two days of perhaps the highest temperature the Uk has ever seen with much ingrastructure unable to cope the NHS barely able to cope and ambulance delays to 99 calls already taking in some cases several hours

Still it might keep trans people out of your toilets

Most of the inland SE and East Anglia up to the midlands. Cambridge and London both forecast to hit 40.

I think it was when the far right started using Mumsnet to spread their hate

Fizbosshoes · 15/07/2022 20:48

We got married and went on honeymoon in the summer of 2003. The weather in Greece was 38-39° every day....it was fine because we were on holiday and didn't do very much. I've found the weather here quite bearable so far in the last few weeks (the summer of 2006 had several weeks of high temperatures which I found more uncomfortable because I was heavily pregnant) but I think it depends what environment you are in.
In a built up area, without aircon and not much open or green space is likely to feel horribly hot and will depend what your work/day schedule is. We camped in an open field in 30 degree temperatures and I was amazed how cool it was at night, but houses and buildings can really retain heat and make it feel uncomfortable.

Someone was asking about checking on elderly people and what should you do. Sorry if already mentioned but often elderly people do not feel thirst and do not drink enough, becoming dehydrated. so even reminding them to have a drink/making a cup of tea for them would help
