To not understand the constant panic

I'm finding it so incredulous to see the level of panic and hysteria on here about a 2 day heatwave.
Posters seem to be hyping each other up. Can humans no longer cope with anything outside of their comfort zone?

Is this the same Spanish that I regularly see jogging, cycling throughout the day. Women in polyester dresses and court shoes and tights, this was in 40 degree heat by the way.

Same Spanish that have outdoor PE lessons for the kids in the day, running round in the sun playing tag etc?

You dont see the Spanish in sensible leisure shoes and baggy saggy linen or with acres of flesh on show.

No, it’s the same Spanish who close all schools and office from 1pm to 4pm every day during the Summer. Those ones.

I lived in Spain for two years and in my experience Spanish people are a lot more aware of how dangerous the heat it. My students used to laugh at the English going to the beach in the afternoon on Summer.

@AnybodyAnywhere Its not that you, on a personal level feeling worried about the heat is offensive. It’s that the media hysteria is just boring now. Two years of being frightened by the TV has sent people bananas. If you think it’s dangerous for you to work just pretend you’ve got covid or say you can’t work in the heat. Just stop policing people saying we’re fed up with the drama.

This sums it up perfectly

@restedbutexhausted do the official reporting ones? They must have different ones for different weather conditions - do those on top of mountains and buildings not record temperature? Are they only
wind and precipitation?
I can confidently tell you mine doesn’t sit in the shade. Simply because we don’t have any in the garden. But as I said it’s not an reporting official one.

HangingOver · 15/07/2022 20:21

I'm only panicking about keeping my elderly pets cool. One of them is already really sick Sad

They certainly do not close all schools and offices, we have family in Madrid. Ive seen school kids having PE lessons in El Retiro at 1pm, running their little socks off and the teachers too.

My parents live in a small house which is very well insulated in an attempt to keep them warm in the winter without it costing them all of their pension. My mother has had cancer, has no thyroid function, which means she has fluctuating metabolic issues, has had a heart attack and has stents. She is 70.

Their house has heated up gradually over the last several weeks of warm, dry weather, and upstairs is staying at about 25C at the coolest now. Fans move warm air around but do little to help.

Two days of 35-40C outside (shade temperature, remember) will heat their house to a temperature which could kill her, by putting too much strain on her heart. But I’ll tell her to have an ice pop and not think about it, shall I?

So many arseholes on this thread.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 15/07/2022 20:23

Ooooo I googled a thing about weather stations for the met office - not in shade!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 15/07/2022 20:23

We just had a water fight at work to cope with it 😁

You should open the loft hatch at night if you have one and the windows.

Spray with water mist and sit in front of the fan, topping up on the mist every now and then

When its really hot I sleep under a damp thin towel, its lovely with the fan blowing over.

MrsPartridgeKleio · 15/07/2022 20:25

Was going to start a thread saying the same thing @Panicnomore
@FourEyesGood we are all ND in my family. 50% of the family struggles above 22 degrees, none of us work in air conditioned environments, in fact my OH is a chef. I still don't understand the panic for TWO DAYS!

where has the common sense gone?

HailAdrian · 15/07/2022 20:26

That's mumsnet for you though, some of them haven't been this excited since lockdown.

oldstudentmum · 15/07/2022 20:26

Sleep with a sheet. Also wish me luck as I’m driving to Cornwall Monday however I’m going early and going to stop off at tintagnell castle, or whatever it’s called but I bet it’s cold (ish)get it .

Very much this.

Be terrified of covid, forget covid look at Ukraine, enough about Ukraine look at monkeypox, ok now look here polio, hold on here we go back to covid, no wait its going to be hot for 2 days. Just give it a fucking rest.

It'll be a lockdown for many in a way as many vulnerable people will have no choice but to stay indoors with a fan and curtains shut etc
I think it's sad myself , but I'm hoping it'll fizzle out by next week !

😂Too true

Oblomov22 · 15/07/2022 20:30

Agree, he paranoia and anxiety drives me crazy.

Warmhandscoldheart · 15/07/2022 20:31

First thing my husband said when he got home from work was "We better organise an Iceland delivery for tomorrow in case they stop the deliveries next week" 🙄 🤪

Legrandsophie · 15/07/2022 20:31

@bellac11

They do. Spanish schools either run from 9-5 with a three hour lunch break or 8-2. And they break up for Summer in mid June- hence why all the European visitors have already arrived in my tourist town.

Britain has some of the shortest Summer holidays in Europe. By the time it is super hot the kids in Italy, Greece and Spain have broken up from school!

Local primary planning to close at 1pm...

heattreat · 15/07/2022 20:34

Soubriquet · 15/07/2022 17:44

No! I hate the heat and 37 degree weather is way too much for me.

Im really going to struggle and I suffer badly

Worse than anyone else?

Doubt it!

heattreat · 15/07/2022 20:35

Blueberrycreampie · 15/07/2022 17:47

Well I'm dreading it as I hate the extreme temperatures (why oh why did I move to the far south east of England from Scotland)? But for many, especially the elderly and those with some illnesses it could be dangerous if they cant keep cool enough and pets need to be kept cool as well. Everyone needs to take care!

I'm sure everyone can manage for two days.....

Try a cool towel for them to lie on

Once again, people who are vulnerable to the 'threat' will need to take extra care of themselves but most of us will be fine, just sweaty. It's those who have to work physically strenuous badly paid jobs outside that I really feel for.

heattreat · 15/07/2022 20:37

@VioletInsolence how much rain do you need?
