To not understand the constant panic

I'm finding it so incredulous to see the level of panic and hysteria on here about a 2 day heatwave.
Posters seem to be hyping each other up. Can humans no longer cope with anything outside of their comfort zone?

I don't think people are panicking, many are concerned as they have not encountered this level of heat before. Maybe they haven't been to Qatar or India and observed that people move as little as possible between 11am and 4pm and do most work and trade in the early morning and late evening. Their entire culture and lives have evolved around living in the heat.

In Britain we are usually naive and try to carry on 'business as usual' in all weathers and get into all sorts of trouble because of it. Look at all the drivers that have zero experience driving in snow that mess up our roads by sliding around like fools.

Mad dogs and Englishman ...

I bet we have loads of heatstroke victims by Wednesday that are fools just saying 'it won't stop me - it's only a bit of sun for gawds sake'. And yet again the poor NHS will shovel them up and bear the brunt.

Bridgeth29 · 15/07/2022 20:00

Maybe instead of posting something like this, mocking those who you deem as "panicking" you could have a think that they might have different circumstances to you and their "panic" may be justified. If you don't need to "panic", then maybe you are privileged and could be grateful for this, rather than feel the need to be disrespectful to others.

shinynewapple22 · 15/07/2022 20:00

I'm actually quite worried . My mum is 88 and has Covid - the care home staff tell me she has a high fever and isn't drinking much . I know if they are concerned further they will get medical help - but I'm a bit frightened as to the impact of extreme heat on someone elderly and vulnerable who is already unwell .

riesenrad · 15/07/2022 20:00

I also think there's a good deal of denial going on (including from our useless "government". People simply don't want to accept that it is getting hotter, and that they have to change their habits.

IAMNOTTHEONE2022 · 15/07/2022 20:00

I am kind of dreading it. I will be the only manager in in our dpt (nhs). We have no air con and I am going to have to work core hours. But of course I'll survive.. It's the driving in it that'll be the main problem for me..but life has taught me never to belittle others' fears as we all see life a little differently.

Joeblack066 · 15/07/2022 19:51

What a horrible and damaging thing to say.
so many people ready to dismiss others’ worries and fears as the reaction of a ‘snowflake’
Further damaging their mental health.
The Met Office have said there is a risk to life. If that doesn’t worry you, fine. Good for you! What a hero!
But don’t be horrible to those who it does worry. It’s downright mean.

Its completely inappropriate and disingenuous to say that being upset that someone called you a snowflake is akin to having poor mental health.

Being pissed off about something or annoyed is not a mental health disorder.

mbosnz · 15/07/2022 20:03

I also think (based on observing my teens dressed in sweaters and opaques) when we are kids (like the pp who was doing her o levels in 1976), when we are younger we can self regulate our temperature an awful lot better when we are young.

Now think about people with thyroid issues, peri and menopausal issues, being obese, being asthmatic, yes, being anxious, being fair skinned and freckled. . .)

Readyourownbookmoira · 15/07/2022 20:04

My mum just called to tell me not to go on a day trip tomorrow. It will be 19 degrees where we live. Madness. When I pointed this out she got mardy.
She’s moved through panic about Covid, Ukraine, abortion rights and now weather in the last five months while claiming she’s not being influenced by the hysteria of the news cycle. It will be back to Covid next week when we’re sat in drizzle again, like so many of the drama queens posting on the heat threads.

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 15/07/2022 20:05

riesenrad · 15/07/2022 19:58

I would agree, except that it's been over 25ish degrees for some time now and we've not seen rain for weeks. Everywhere is tinder-dry.

South east has been hot for a week at most and it was raining less than a fortnight ago. Like raining every day.

Legrandsophie · 15/07/2022 20:05

YABU- Brits are stupidly naive about the dangers of extreme heat. Mad dogs and English men!

most countries that experience extreme heat have mitigating measure in play- air con, closed during the afternoon, good understanding of hydration and culturally ingrained attitudes to dressing appropriately (there is a reason many cultures from hot countries wear large, baggy, cotton or linen clothes.

Instead the British go and bake themselves, drink copious alcohol, don’t drink water and try to work through the hottest times of the day. The Spanish think we are crazy.

wishmyhousetidy · 15/07/2022 20:06

I understand what you are saying but I work in a manual job outside and am dreading it. The amount it is on the news will hopefully mean the bosses will decide it is dangerous for us to work out in it all day and give us alternative jobs

MrsEdnaWelthorpe · 15/07/2022 20:06

Somethingneedstochange · 15/07/2022 19:05

Exactly I'm sat in A and E with mine now. They have said there's been an increase in people collapsing both young and old. Obviously doesn't affect them so we're all panicking for nothing. Where we are waiting though is a modern extension compared to the rest of the hospital and actually has air con.

It doesn't affect them until it does affect them of course. No doubt on Monday and Tuesday there will be stories all over the news about the ambulance service and A+E departments unable to cope because of the number of idiots people suffering from heatstroke and severe sunburn.

It's like the people who have to be rescued after trying to climb Ben Nevis in the middle of winter in trainers, except on massive scale.
So many people in the UK seem to think taking extreme weather conditions seriously is some kind of weakness. Really don't understand it.

Like Kipling wrote about being in India: only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the mid day sun. 🙄

Legrandsophie · 15/07/2022 20:07

And extreme heat is deadly to the elderly. There will be a big uptick on dead’s of the over 80s next week.

Choopi · 15/07/2022 20:07

SueSaid · 15/07/2022 19:18

'oh yes and our roads have been bubbling its so hot'
We used to play with melted tar in the roads with sticks when we were kids. I really think it will have been this hot in the past at some point.

Oh I used to love doing this as a kid! My parents weren't so pleased about me getting tar all over my clothes though! I'm in Ireland where we just have a few nice days of weather forecast. Looking forward to barbeques and ice lollies.

Penguinevere · 15/07/2022 20:08

I agree some people are being dramatic rather than practical.
Did you name change for this thread?

Cantwaitfortheweekend · 15/07/2022 20:08

We’ve had an email from work today warning us to have air con on and drink plenty of water! Ridiculous, we are adults not children!

Minimalme · 15/07/2022 20:09

Do you live in the extreme heat zone op?

I wouldn't have bought fans if I lived in Cornwall for example, but my town will be likely to reach 40C on Monday and Tuesday.

I have done UK summers for years but this is unprecedented.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 15/07/2022 20:09

@riesenrad the rain shortage has been ongoing since very early last year - nearly 18 months of not enough rain. Now that IS something to be very worried about. Yet the authorities and media aren’t and certainly not in anyway to the same degree as they are about next week’s temperatures. These temperatures we’ve currently experienced so far, are quite normal. Mid 20s for no more than a day or two, only a fortnight of temperature in the early 20s. Yet we’ve a media frenzy regarding TWO days of high 30s temperatures. (The 2003 European heatwave was in the low to mid 40s). Not really comparable ..

Panicnomore · 15/07/2022 20:10

To the posters who have said I'm awful for starting this thread and bully for me that I don't have to work....
I am a hotel housekeeper and will change a minimim of 20beds on both Mon and Tues. I work a 7hr shift and will be sweating buckets I'm sure.
Im peri menopausal and know it will be hard. So no I won't be sat in a paddling pool... Well not until 4pm!

OP posts:
AnybodyAnywhere · 15/07/2022 20:11

I can understand why most of you are annoyed.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Summer of 76 because I was 21. During the 1980s I lived in Oman and Morocco for a couple of years each…no problem.

But now I’m 67 and had a Stroke at the end of last year. I do an occasional job which I have already committed to for Mon, Tues and Weds 8am - 4pm…it involves people’s qualifications and I would be letting them down dreadfully if I don’t go. It’s an old building and earlier this week the room was 32° at 7pm.

Yes I am worried and I’m sorry if that offends you.

Minimalme · 15/07/2022 20:12

Yeah, I'm sure the Met Office are issuing a warning because they are hysterical and love drama.

Met Office CEO Penny Endersby said the extreme heat forecast was "absolutely unprecedented" and she urged people to take the warning as seriously as a red or amber warning for snow or wind.

Is this the same Spanish that I regularly see jogging, cycling throughout the day. Women in polyester dresses and court shoes and tights, this was in 40 degree heat by the way.

Same Spanish that have outdoor PE lessons for the kids in the day, running round in the sun playing tag etc?

You dont see the Spanish in sensible leisure shoes and baggy saggy linen or with acres of flesh on show.

RoseAndRose · 15/07/2022 17:51

First time ever that there's been a threat-to-life warning from heat (not just for the vulnerable) and according to Met Office spokesman this morning a 50/50 chance of seeing 40 in places.

It's unprecedented, and is the sort of dangerous weather that should be respected

Which is hard to do when we're being told to carry on as normal despite the risks.
We're hearing of all these health risks, yet we are being told to send our kids to school.
It's like saying there is risk of infection as the swimming pool is contaminated by a dangerous substance, but you are still expected to jump in!

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 15/07/2022 19:15

Our Outside thermometer has often recorded high 30s temps and a one or two 45deg heats in the garden - in full sun. So we do have these temperatures in the uk (midlands). They aren’t reported because they aren’t detected by the reporting weather stations. I’m sure other people will have seen local anomalies too. But they are brief in this country lasting only a day or two.

Weather stations take the shade temperature Hmm

Readyourownbookmoira · 15/07/2022 20:16

@AnybodyAnywhere Its not that you, on a personal level feeling worried about the heat is offensive. It’s that the media hysteria is just boring now. Two years of being frightened by the TV has sent people bananas. If you think it’s dangerous for you to work just pretend you’ve got covid or say you can’t work in the heat. Just stop policing people saying we’re fed up with the drama.
