Strange comment from couple re children’s clothes.

I’ve always taken pride in my children’s outfits. Always ironed, Boden etc.

I was at the local tea shop yesterday when an elderly man said to my two young children ‘ooo dressed for a wedding are we’ and his wife snapped at him saying ‘no, just a parent who dresses them properly’

I felt quite uncomfortable that he felt my children were going to a wedding because they were in a dress.

Life is way too short for:
-ironing
-expensive kids clothes
-giving a shit about things strangers say to you.

Absolutely this. There was never any point putting my DC in any fancy clothing/expensive clothing when young as invariably whatever they wore would end up with food/drink/dirt down it.

NewNamePrivacyneeded · 15/07/2022 08:07

Ah but if you dressed them in ironed Primark clothing? It's not a brand thing @Uptheapplesandpearstobed there are people that cannot help themselves commenting in real life. Ignore or speak to them about it.

FourChimneys · 15/07/2022 08:07

Shodan I completely agree. Random clothes on a small child are adorable. My recent favourite is a dinosaur outfit paired with pink sparkly wellies.

birdglasspen2 · 15/07/2022 08:08

My children spend their days in clothes covered in food, paint, mud and whatever else they are up to. Their clothes come out of a big drawer where they are chucked once dried. I just hope your kids are allowed to have fun and get messy in their "Boden" outfits!

hobbledyhoy · 15/07/2022 08:09

I think the phrase 'Ironed and Bodened' as mentioned by a PP should become a Mumsnet classic.

This has all got really mean. There is a thread about Y4 girls ganging up on each other. This feels similar.

So much inverse snobbery about Boden! Blimey!

This!

user1471538283 · 15/07/2022 08:11

It was a compliment. I used to get comments about my DSs clothes because I made sure they were expensive and always perfect.

You dress your DC how you see fit.

Yes, my complaint is that I don’t want them looking over dressed for the park. I thought the dresses were comfortable and pretty, not wedding worthy.

Can you post a link from boden so we can see if they are wedding or park worthy?

If you think a bit of gentle piss-taking is in any way comparable to children "ganging up on each other" then maybe the internet isn't for you.

Yeah, that's what they say on the playground. "We were only joking, miss"

No way is this thread "gentle" in any way..

Why are MN always inversely snobby about ironing? It's as if anyone who irons their clothes must have no life.

Every single time. It is like a competition.

I personally love ironing, and when I don't have time my lovely cleaner will see to it - down to the last tea towel and kid's pants 😁

I have a very blessed, busy and full life, and I iron. All is possible.

OP, I can't believe any harm was meant. Don't give it any more thought.

So much wrong with this post I literally don't know where to start. I suppose the DC aren't being unreasonable.

Perfect.

Echobelly · 15/07/2022 08:17

The guy was just expressing that your children looked smart through the medium of humorous hyperbole, really not worth thinking of twice.

Louise0701 · 15/07/2022 08:17

Oh, OP 😂😂😂😂 you could try a subscription service or podcasts if you’re this bored.

Why are posters now diagnosing this totally real gentleman with autism and dementia?

I don't think the posters are being serious, rather, joining in with all the MN clichés!

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 15/07/2022 08:20

Lunarpsychobitch · 15/07/2022 01:11

YANBU but perhaps a little over sensitive. The elderly gentleman probably meant no harm and could be in the early stages of a degenerative illness.

Because this is Mumsnet, where everyone over 50 has dementia, even the ones who wear Boden.

Sapphirejane · 15/07/2022 08:21

@AtwilightRebellion - have you considered that you having a cleaner frees up an awful lot of time to iron that others not blessed with the means to hire a cleaner may not have?

DappledThings · 15/07/2022 08:21

My children wear mostly supermarket clothing. DD is partial to a Mountain Warehouse stretchy dress and sometimes wears these to the park. Their clothing is often stained but is always ironed.

I don't know where I fit on the Mumsnet Scale of Boden Ironedness to Middle Class Crumpling scale.

Sapphirejane · 15/07/2022 08:21

Bunnycat101 · 15/07/2022 07:57

90% of the girls dresses on Boden are perfectly normal day dresses that no-one would bat an eyelid if they saw your child. The only one that screams formal to me is this one and I wouldn’t pick that for the park.

Haha this is the exact sort of dress I was describing without even going on their website.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/07/2022 08:23

because they were in a dress

maybe splash the cash and buy them a dress each

SpiderinaWingMirror · 15/07/2022 08:24

Older man was being nice.
His wife realised you might take offence and paid you the compliment of saying you dressed them properly.
Dress as you want. My DDs when they were little lived in H and M dresses that were 4.99 each.
But honestly do what you want x

PinkButtercups · 15/07/2022 08:26

Can they play in the park and get mucky though? Because that's the most important thing.

I think you've tried to have a little boast which is fine but It's funny.
