Strange comment from couple re children’s clothes.

I’ve always taken pride in my children’s outfits. Always ironed, Boden etc.

I was at the local tea shop yesterday when an elderly man said to my two young children ‘ooo dressed for a wedding are we’ and his wife snapped at him saying ‘no, just a parent who dresses them properly’

I felt quite uncomfortable that he felt my children were going to a wedding because they were in a dress.

Tbf there's someone near me who takes a pair of chihuahuas, dressed in ruffled dresses, to the park most days.

Arnaquer · 15/07/2022 08:40

Peak Mumsnet.

DeadButDelicious · 15/07/2022 08:40

My DD (5) would wear sparkly party dresses every day of her life if she could 😂. Doesn't stop her looking like the wreck of the hesperus within about 5 minutes though, she's a complete dirt magnet. She can regularly be found in a party dress and wellies, knee deep in mud.

The man was paying you a compliment. He thinks your children were nicely turned out. It's really not that big of a thing.

tootiredtoocare · 15/07/2022 08:41

He was paying you a compliment, saying exactly what you want to hear, that they look well dressed and pretty. Let's be honest, the vast majority of us go for leggings and tops for kids these days. He probably wouldn't recognise Boden from Asda, but he can see the Boden is better quality than most he sees regularly and is commenting on such. My kids wouldn't get that compliment, because they wear Asda for the park 😂

CallOnMe · 15/07/2022 08:43

My DD used to walk around in full blown princess dresses and fake tiaras.

I would take a comment like that with a pinch of salt.
He was trying to say they look nice.

Do you have a photo of the dress?
I don’t know what Boden is but I assume it’s not just wedding clothes?

Cheeseandlobster · 15/07/2022 08:45

Your wife is nasty and rude. And that is not classy

So much wrong with this post I literally don't know where to start. I suppose the DC aren't being unreasonable.

😁. 100% agree.

YANBU but perhaps a little over sensitive. The elderly gentleman probably meant no harm and could be in the early stages of a degenerative illness.

Oh please!

@entropynow maybe he was autistic

Lol!

Who cares about a random man’s thoughts. Ignore and move on - also ignore the shrieks about Boden on this thread. They make perfectly normal clothes that last for ages.

ThickCutSteakChips · 15/07/2022 09:00

Boden was the first Mumsnetty thing I ever learnt about. It will always have a special place in my heart.

Thinkingblonde · 15/07/2022 09:02

Have I been time travelled back 30 years? The year 4 playground bullies have grown up and moved to MN.

I genuinely don’t get the obsession with Boden. It’s the most random status symbol I’ve ever seen.

Welcome to MN!

Thank you, been here a long time but have only recently found the courage to join in.

NonagonInfinityOpensTheDoor · 15/07/2022 09:20

Boden doesn't look weddingy to me. It's just kicking around stuff.
God, what I would give to have the privileged lifestyle to think a £20 KIDS top is “kicking around” stuff

Starpeople · 15/07/2022 09:22

I honestly don't feel the elderly man will have meant anything by the comment. In his life and experience dressing like that might mean 'Sunday best' party/special occasion clothes. I personally like to dress my children in clean comfortable clothes they can run around in (if people judge me I couldn't care a less).

Onlyforcake · 15/07/2022 09:23

As boden are casual clothes I am guessing he was being sarcastic and the wife was pissed off?
The cost doesn't make them smart! They're just slightly pricier park clothes!

It's not weddingy though. It's posh kicking around stuff. You'll get nicer weddingy stuff at h&m

heartbroken22 · 15/07/2022 09:26

It's just a man who thought his opinion mattered.

MissusPongo · 15/07/2022 09:27

I remember many years ago, pre-kids, when DH mentioned Boden to me and I thought he was talking about Bodum, the coffee pot company. Innocent days.

DowntonCrabby · 15/07/2022 09:30

Come on OP, you’re not so sensitive you actually give a ff about what some random man thinks about your DC being dressed too neatly!

Starpeople · 15/07/2022 09:30

'The cost doesn't make them smart! They're just slightly pricier park clothes!'

Oh really? I got the impression the children were in nice dresses, and not running around stuff.

Sceptre86 · 15/07/2022 09:32

Some of the posts are mean spirited. It sounds like he was just trying to make conversation, no harm in that. I think you are overthinking it, dress your kids however you like.

Pipsquiggle · 15/07/2022 09:34

Do people actually iron children's clothes? Boden or otherwise. Genuine question.

I think I have maybe 5 times (DS 10 &7) when we were going to a posh family event
