I’ve always taken pride in my children’s outfits. Always ironed, Boden etc.

I was at the local tea shop yesterday when an elderly man said to my two young children ‘ooo dressed for a wedding are we’ and his wife snapped at him saying ‘no, just a parent who dresses them properly’

I felt quite uncomfortable that he felt my children were going to a wedding because they were in a dress.

YANBU but perhaps a little over sensitive. The elderly gentleman probably meant no harm and could be in the early stages of a degenerative illness.

Ofgs dementia as well? It's a bloody opinion not a sign of brain damage.

lollipoprainbow · 15/07/2022 07:31

@entropynow maybe he was autistic

Herejustforthisone · 15/07/2022 07:33

Why are posters now diagnosing this totally real gentleman with autism and dementia?

Prettypussy · 15/07/2022 07:33

Why are MN always inversely snobby about ironing? It's as if anyone who irons their clothes must have no life.

Jesus Christ.

Mine has gone to the park in variously: a dragon costume, a tiger onesie, a princess dress with Harry Potter robe on top, an Iron Man suit, many many many visits throughout the year wearing a Halloween bat costume, all accessorised with Batman or Lightning McQueen wellies (sometimes one of each).

I don’t think it’s possible to overdress for anything. They just wear stuff and then do stuff. As long as you can make them keep the clothes on during the toddler era you’re winning.

est1899 · 15/07/2022 07:39

Clearly I don't take pride in my kids outfits because I've never bought anything from Boden. Poor loves, I must be a terrible mother.

est1899 · 15/07/2022 07:40

@Chattycathydoll your child sounds very cool! I love the sound of the bat costume.

Whatwouldscullydo · 15/07/2022 07:40

Dresses aren't really practical for the park. One time I had to rescue a small child from falling off the climbing wall as she kept getting her foot caught on the dress.

Shorts and t shirts much better. And last nights dinner...😜

I'm.intrigued by the dresses now. They weren't the frilly kind with puffy skirts or lacy hems were they?

I'm currently imagining those light cotton stretchy summer dress but they get mistaken for nighties more than they do wedding attire...

Ironing kids clothes is a waste of time. Its like.polishing a turd

Ffs last weeks someone diagnosed the Ops husband with almost definitely autism after a couple of posts and now you can diagnose Dementia in one post makes me wonder why we need professionals 🙄

TheRainIsNotPermanent · 15/07/2022 07:42

The man's comment was fine. I don't quite get what the woman meant though. Do we all need to wear ironed Boden in order to be dressed properly?

SoupDragon · 15/07/2022 07:44

DD went to the park in a cream fringed "flapper dress" from Monsoon, Primark leggings and some snowboots (it was not winter). She climbed trees dressed like that. Now that was definitely over dressed but I didn't choose the outfit 😂

TBH, I would have more issue with the woman of the couple with her snippy comment about dressing children properly. That was a horribly judgemental comment whereas the man's was just generic small talk.

SoupDragon · 15/07/2022 07:46

I've just looked through my phone for the photo of DD's outfit and I'm pleased to say she's wearing a Boden hoody so is properly dressed. Although it's not ironed... 🤔

I wouldn't say I'm snobby about it, personally. I just think that life's too short to spend time making my clothes flatter.

It's especially too short to do it for my children, who mostly throw up or drop yoghurt down their freshly applied clothing anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

Applegreenb · 15/07/2022 07:49

Boden is similar to Jojo and various other shops, it’s not even close to wedding clothing. Makes this even more unbelievable

Trixiefirecracker · 15/07/2022 07:49

@SnackSizeRaisin it’s not ‘sexist!’ Fgs. I suggest you look up what sexism is.

Thanks, I agree!! The costume came from Asda so not even close to Boden levels of proper Wink

Sapphirejane · 15/07/2022 07:50

Were the (completely real) dresses the floral ones with the smoking and the Peter Pan collar. My friend is forever dressing her child in those. Poor child looks rather uncomfortable and out of place when we go to the park or the beach.

I am also not sure what constitutes properly dressing a child other than the clothes being weather appropriate. There seems to be a trend of people dressing their children like the royals do for formal events. Even those children wear much more relaxed clothes the rest of the time.

Charlize43 · 15/07/2022 07:52

This thread is like mean girls with kid's clothes.

Ragwort · 15/07/2022 07:56

Why are you overthinking this, the gentleman was probably trying, in a clumsy way, to make small talk by complimenting your DC's appearance... seriously - you need to get a life if this sort of thing bothers you.

Bunnycat101 · 15/07/2022 07:57

90% of the girls dresses on Boden are perfectly normal day dresses that no-one would bat an eyelid if they saw your child. The only one that screams formal to me is this one and I wouldn’t pick that for the park.

Shodan · 15/07/2022 07:58

😁I love the wife's implication that dressing children in, say, shorts and a t shirt would mean they're improperly dressed.

I can remember ds1 stubbornly insisting on wearing a Fireman Sam tabard every day. I used to have to wash it nearly every night to be ready for the next day. The 'man' I was dating at the time was horrified that I would let ds1 go out dressed like that. I laughed at him and then dumped him because really, children going out dressed in 'odd' clothes is one of life's joys, if you ask me.

"Boden eh ?"

I was going to ask What's Boden?
Funny how she assumes everyone knows!
