…in thinking it’s nice to let your bed air before remaking it?

I see this all the time: make your bed immediately upon waking is good for your mental health.

I’ve always been told (by my admittedly domineering mother) that it’s better and more hygienic to air it out for an hour or two- with windows open for extra brownie points. I’ve done this childhood, but was told the other day it was weird by a colleague.

I have been told if you don’t air it, all your farts and bodily emissions will seep into your duvet, and then mattress eventually, but more that it is just “nice” to air it.

Now I don’t have a clue about this but really, but I still do it. What do you think?

OP posts:
Turnthatoff · 14/07/2022 18:43

I’ve honestly never thought about it. But I assume most people have mattress protectors that are washed along with the rest if the sheets?

Comefromaway · 14/07/2022 18:43

That’s weird

MarshaMelrose · 14/07/2022 18:44

My sister always does thus. Not for fart escape. Hahaha. But because of letting moisture go etc. Keeps the bedding fresher longer. She keeps a nice house so she's probably right.

Chouetted · 14/07/2022 18:44

Your mother is correct.

We all sweat during sleep - airing your bed allows it to dry out rather than festering.

Bibbetybobbity · 14/07/2022 18:45

I do this- always pull the duvet back (neatly 😂) and let it air during the day, so it’s ‘made’ but the duvet is folded half way back.

HermioneWeasley · 14/07/2022 18:46

Duvets and folded back in my house and windows opened unless absolutely freezing.

catfunk · 14/07/2022 18:49

I fold my duvet back in half on a morning and always always open the window.
When I walk into a house I can sometimes smell the bedding and it makes me 🤢

CrowsEverywhere · 14/07/2022 18:49

I air them every day, I do it to make them less of a good environment for bed bugs/ dust mites notsurewhich!

bananaboats · 14/07/2022 18:51

I air mine with the window open every day, not particularly bothered about farts lol but think it keeps the bed fresher.

StridTheKiller · 14/07/2022 18:51

People who make the bed without airing it are the same people who wear knickers for bed.

MrszClaus · 14/07/2022 18:52

I let mine air for a similar time if I'm WFH, if it's an office day it's only about 30 mins when I'm doing other bits! Definitely feels fresher more often. You sweat in your sleep so making it straight away traps all the moisture and makes it fusty imo.

Tunus · 14/07/2022 18:53

I air mine while I get ready then make it before I leave the house.

trexahoy · 14/07/2022 18:57

Our duvet gets flipped over, sheet and pillows straightened when we get out in the morning and left for an hour to air, usually with the window open - makes a massive difference to how stale the sheets and room air feel. Totally agree OP!

Thehop · 14/07/2022 18:58

Always air the bed here

LordEmsworth · 14/07/2022 18:59

Do you really see it all the time? Because that's the first time I've ever seen the claim that making your bed as soon as you get up is good for your mental health...

I always air the bed, the sweat needs to dry out not seep in! (I realise just how minging that sounds...)

GentlemanJay · 14/07/2022 19:01

We bought a very expensive Harrison bed. After 18 months the mattress had dropped to create an in print of how we laid.

When the technician from the bed company came to view it they said that the mattress needed to air every morning as moisture from overnight had made the mattress sink.

So from then on I've always followed the manufacturer's instruction and left the quilt halfway down during the ray. To let the bed dry out.

limitededitionbarbie · 14/07/2022 19:02

I. Make ,y bed as soon as I get up I am going to start airing it as you can't beat a cold bed to get into

ZaraSizeMedium · 14/07/2022 19:03

I pull the duvet right back, open the windows and air the bed for an hour or so before I make it.

DS doesn't make his bed, the duvet just gets left as it is, and his room always smells musty except for day 1 when he's got fresh bedding on.

I hoover my mattress every 2 or 3 days with a handheld UV light mattress hoover aswell, and you just wouldn't believe the amount of crap in the filter when I do.

Lizziekisss · 14/07/2022 19:04

Always air here.

chickma · 14/07/2022 19:04

Our sheets are always folded back so the top half of the bed can air.

As I've said my sister tells me I must air my bed but the op is definitely correct that advisers on mental health and those struggling to keep their house tidy always say make your bed. I think it's to do with putting you in a daily routine which is vital for those two groups of people...of which I'm both! 😔

user1471453601 · 14/07/2022 19:05

I always air my bed. In fact, I frequently air it so long, the duvet only gets pulled up when I get in it again.

But I'm a shit housewife (but happy ☺)

Dutch1e · 14/07/2022 19:07

I do the halfway flip-back thing too, and tighten the bottom sheet. It suits my lazy personality to throw the covers fully back when I get up and feel like I'm halfway to a made bed.

ouch321 · 14/07/2022 19:09

StridTheKiller · 14/07/2022 18:51

People who make the bed without airing it are the same people who wear knickers for bed.

Well they're cleaner than the people who effectively use their bed linen as their knickers. Vile habit.

Ditto. I 'make' my bed every day like this, pillows all plumped up too. It's part of my get up/get washed/get dressed routine.
