…in thinking it’s nice to let your bed air before remaking it?

I see this all the time: make your bed immediately upon waking is good for your mental health.

I’ve always been told (by my admittedly domineering mother) that it’s better and more hygienic to air it out for an hour or two- with windows open for extra brownie points. I’ve done this childhood, but was told the other day it was weird by a colleague.

I have been told if you don’t air it, all your farts and bodily emissions will seep into your duvet, and then mattress eventually, but more that it is just “nice” to air it.

Now I don’t have a clue about this but really, but I still do it. What do you think?

I always air mine. Trapped perspiration is grim.

InTheShadeOfTheFigTree · 14/07/2022 22:35

Our bed is aired all day until we go to bed again. Sometimes hang the duvet on the line or out of the window too.

I don’t, because then my cat will sit on my clean sheets which I think is even worse than an unaired bed…

What’s wrong with your cat sitting on your clean sheets? Muddy paws? Fleas?

those pp saying they never air their bed but their houses/bedrooms don’t stink? Like fuck. So gross.

People who make the bed without airing it are the same people who wear knickers for bed.

What’s wrong with wearing knickers to bed?

Why do some people wear knickers in bed?

Because I don't want to have to wash my pyjama bottoms daily. Or if it's hot and I'm not wearing pyjama bottoms, I don't want to get discharge and pubic hairs all over the sheets. Perhaps you can tell me why do some people NOT wear knickers in bed?

RichardMarxisinnocent · 14/07/2022 22:42

And I always air my bed. Duvet folded back, window open.

I’ll always air my bed after watching Aggie and Kym berate a man for not airing his, and saying the bed smelled like a mouldy wash cloth

That's when I started to air mine too! 🤣

Heartofglass12345 · 14/07/2022 22:51

Mine is aired all day because I don't make it Grin I bet most men don't sit there thinking about these things lol.
Oh I also wear knickers and a vest top to bed as pj's are too warm!

Emmelina · 14/07/2022 23:03

Mine gets folded back neatly and left for the day. That way I’ve still satisfied my mind in that I haven’t just rolled out, but it still gets to air.

Rainallnight · 14/07/2022 23:06

I air it for two reasons, both from childhood.

First, I was very asthmatic and my consultant told my mum to do it to kill dust mites. Am still asthmatic so still do it.

Second, I was a big Chalet School fan and the girls there always had an extremely elaborate airing process to do with standing up pillows; draping duvets etc that I can only hope to emulate.

KeepYaHeadUp · 14/07/2022 23:09

God yeah, always air my bed. Windows open even in winter and sunshine is an extra bonus for sterilising properties!

rocksonrocks · 14/07/2022 23:10

Yup, duvet back and windows open here too. You really can smell the difference in a room when people don't do this. Fusty!

LemonTT · 14/07/2022 23:12

I always wonder of the trouble I may have caused on this issue when two men at work were lamenting that one of their housekeeping roles was to make the beds in the morning before they left for work.

i explained the airing principle and their eyes lit up in wonder. The mansplaining that must have evoked back home would have been hilarious to observe.

Dishh · 15/07/2022 02:35

I always air the bedding. I've noted the amount of heat it retains for hours after we've gotten up the morning, so I really believe that needs to dissipate to avoid the the development of mould and other nasties. I have convinced myself that this is yet another sign of my superior skill in tidying.

Kant · 15/07/2022 02:49

Yes! Always fold down duvet, throw windows open and air while I shower, etc. I can't stand stale air, fabrics, rooms or whatever.

I was reading thru thinking sounded like a great recipe for getting the sheet covered in cat hair😾

craftsupplyhoarder · 15/07/2022 03:38

I air the bed some days, if I feel it needs it, but I don't want sheets covered in dog hair, so it has to be a quick airing, as it's too difficult to keep our spoilt dog off the bed all day (especially if DH is working from home, as he's unlikely to be vigilant about keeping the door closed). If the sheets are washed often enough, I don't think it's absolutely necessary, unless it's been a particularly hot or sweaty night.

abblie · 15/07/2022 05:25

Yip read about that years ago and air my bed everyday

FangsForTheMemory · 15/07/2022 05:55

Always air my bed. Air duvet outside weekly too. Windows upstairs are always open unless it’s pouring down or blowing a hoolie. Don’t wear knickers in bed as am a nightdress person. Can’t stand pyjamas.

onlythreenow · 15/07/2022 06:14

Who makes their bed???

echt · 15/07/2022 07:01

I always air the bed. On change day I hang the uncovered duvet over the balcony railings if it's sunny. Windows and balcony door left open unless it's very cold or peeing down, but flyscreen always on.

MenopauseSucks · 15/07/2022 07:25

I air mine almost every day - sometimes I forget, remake it then think bugger it!
I like to have a window open for about 10mins or so in the winter - don't want to lose that costly heat - but have the window open far longer in the summer.
I try to change my sheets every fortnight but sometimes it overruns a bit. I do have a mattress protector that gets changed every time I do my sheets.
