…in thinking it’s nice to let your bed air before remaking it?

I see this all the time: make your bed immediately upon waking is good for your mental health.

I’ve always been told (by my admittedly domineering mother) that it’s better and more hygienic to air it out for an hour or two- with windows open for extra brownie points. I’ve done this childhood, but was told the other day it was weird by a colleague.

I have been told if you don’t air it, all your farts and bodily emissions will seep into your duvet, and then mattress eventually, but more that it is just “nice” to air it.

Now I don’t have a clue about this but really, but I still do it. What do you think?

Get up, pull duvet over the end of the bed back on itself (so side we have slept under is up), open window. Repeat for all beds. Just before leaving shake duvets and pillows into position ie make beds and close windows. That was what I was taught. Nothing to do with farting but moisture same reason you open all windows whatever the weather.

cottagegardenflower · 14/07/2022 19:11

Yes air the bed most of the day. It reduces the amount of bacteria etc thats in it.

Duvets and folded back in my house and windows opened unless absolutely freezing.

this.

ChinBristles · 14/07/2022 19:12

Google tells me an adult sweats out 200ml per night. (More atm, probably!) And it has to go somewhere. So better out the window than absorbing into your mattress. No-one wants a moist mattress (!!)

People who make the bed without airing it are the same people who wear knickers for bed.

I air my bed with the windows open and I wear knickers in bed.

YANBU OP - making the bed straightaway is grim.

Bibbetybobbity · 14/07/2022 18:45

I do this- always pull the duvet back (neatly 😂) and let it air during the day, so it’s ‘made’ but the duvet is folded half way back.

This is the Way.

Bottom sheet straightened, pillows plumped and turned over, duvet put neatly back on the bed and then folded back so the whole bed can air out. Window open, too. I channel my inner Chalet School Girl. If I had a balcony, the duvet would definitely be out on it every day.

Musicaltheatremum · 14/07/2022 19:15

Never used to bother but new partner always did so this is our new routine. We get up and fold back the duvet in half. Sheets remain fresh. I perspire a lot at night as does he so I think it's good to air the bed.

WeAllHaveWings · 14/07/2022 19:17

My bed is left to air every day with windows open if possible to keep fresher, duvet is folded down so underside of duvet and the mattress sheet get well aired.

it is never made up and dressed nicely with decorative pillows/throws (dont own any!).

Loics · 14/07/2022 19:17

Yes! I do this, and also strip the bed then leave it all day before making it with fresh bedding, when the time comes, to let the actual mattress, duvet and pillows air out too. 😂

MrsPartridgeKleio · 14/07/2022 19:22

I never make my bed.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 14/07/2022 19:25

I’ve never known a single person get an illness from their bed so I suspect it’s much of a muchness really.

My bed gets made 2/10 times maybe. Otherwise it’s a shaggy mess.

Always air all of our beds (and I wear knickers in bed).

ehb102 · 14/07/2022 19:26

Dry out the dust mites, crack the window open and draw back the duvet.

ZaraSizeMedium · 14/07/2022 19:03

I pull the duvet right back, open the windows and air the bed for an hour or so before I make it.

DS doesn't make his bed, the duvet just gets left as it is, and his room always smells musty except for day 1 when he's got fresh bedding on.

I hoover my mattress every 2 or 3 days with a handheld UV light mattress hoover aswell, and you just wouldn't believe the amount of crap in the filter when I do.

Does this mean you change your sheets every 2/3 days after the hoovering?

Lovebeingamummy2 · 14/07/2022 19:28

I agree with @Bibbetybobbity this is what I do also

No. I always air the bed with the windows open and always wear pants in bed.

maddiemookins16mum · 14/07/2022 19:36

5.50am - alarm, get up, pull back duvet or sheet. Thrust window wide open to air the room (even in winter, except torrential rain).
downstairs, sort cats, have tea and breakfast, empty dishwasher.
upstairs, make bed. So mine airs for about 25 mins.
I hate getting dressed/ready after my morning shower with an unmade bed.

helpfulperson · 14/07/2022 19:37

I shake the duvet out before I get back in. And I'm still alive.

Hedgesgalore · 14/07/2022 19:40

Beds are aired here, all day.

Duvet folded back, sheet straightened, pillows put tidy, windows open.

On bed changing day, duvet gets slung over the edge of the door to air properly, the door is by the window.

My duvets have duvet protectors on them, these get washed frequently as well.

LouisRenault · 14/07/2022 19:41

I channel my inner Chalet School Girl.

But do you turn your mattress on alternate days?

Always air the bed. Duvet turned back (neatly) when I get up. May or may not pull it up again before bedtime.

What kind of hoover? Do you have a link please?

mateysmum · 14/07/2022 19:43

Harrison bed here too. Had for nearly 10 years and I always fold back the duvet and let it air usually most of the day. DH is a really sweaty sleeper and has just had covid so was even worse. I was sleeping in the spare room to avoid the plague and DH didn't air the bed. It was vile. Had to strip it completely and flip the mattress. Thank goodness the weather has been so good so the whole room had a good blow through.

dayslikethese1 · 14/07/2022 19:45

I was always told this too OP and use it as an excuse to not bother making my bed. I just shake out the pillows and pull duvet back (windows always open as others have said). I figure the actual making the bed part is just aesthetics which I don't care about as nobody sees my bed except DP and he's used to my slovenly ways 😂

CushieButterfieldd · 14/07/2022 19:46

I’ll always air my bed after watching Aggie and Kym berate a man for not airing his, and saying the bed smelled like a mouldy wash cloth

Remainiac · 14/07/2022 19:46

We have individual duvets - single duvet each, king size bed. We turn the duvets when we get up and drape off the bottom of the bed, allowing them and mattress to air, window is open 24/7 except in worst weather. All bedding is changed weekly, both sleep naked.
