…in thinking it’s nice to let your bed air before remaking it?

I see this all the time: make your bed immediately upon waking is good for your mental health.

I’ve always been told (by my admittedly domineering mother) that it’s better and more hygienic to air it out for an hour or two- with windows open for extra brownie points. I’ve done this childhood, but was told the other day it was weird by a colleague.

I have been told if you don’t air it, all your farts and bodily emissions will seep into your duvet, and then mattress eventually, but more that it is just “nice” to air it.

Now I don’t have a clue about this but really, but I still do it. What do you think?

My DH always does this. I never bother.

Luredbyapomegranate · 14/07/2022 20:46

Yep my mum left the beds turned down and opened the windows

I do at least to the former - I just leave it half turned down all day, pillows tidied up

PlntLady · 14/07/2022 20:47

It's not weird. We do this. Its basic hygiene along with changing the sheets every week as far as I'm concerned.
You sweat into your bed every night and deposit dead skin all over the place. Air it out so the sweat dries off and doesnt fester and give the pillows and duvet a bit of a shake out.... why would you not do this! 🤮🤮🤮

Popsicle33 · 14/07/2022 20:51

I always have the windows open, air the bed and sleep naked. I change the bedclothes once a week. At the moment I'm changing my sheet and main pillowcase twice a week.

People who make the bed without airing it are the same people who wear knickers for bed.

I wear knickers to bed & air my bed every day.

2bazookas · 14/07/2022 20:54

I've always turned back the duvet to the end of the bed and opened the windows to air the bed.

TitInATrance · 14/07/2022 20:54

Always air the bed! I chuck the duvet over the landing bannisters as I head for the bathroom. Make the bed again when I’m going to use it.

daffodilandtulip · 14/07/2022 20:57

I make the bed, and then fold the duvet back diagonally to air. I sleep alone in a double so it airs the side I sleep but looks tidy and so I leave it like that. Windows open too.

Guilty as charged

SquirrelFan · 14/07/2022 21:00

Marilla told Anne Shirley to air the bed. She was an outstanding housekeeper.

KangarooKenny · 14/07/2022 21:01

I ‘make’ my bed by folding the duvet back and straightening it all.

BurbageBrook · 14/07/2022 21:02

I don’t, because then my cat will sit on my clean sheets which I think is even worse than an unaired bed…

easyday · 14/07/2022 21:06

My bed is a crumpled mess when I get up and pretty much stays that way til I get back in it. Sorry mum.

comfortablyfrumpy · 14/07/2022 21:11

I always leave the duvet folded back to let the bed air during the day.

ElspethBoomingHowsen · 14/07/2022 21:31

I am a bed airer and a naked sleeper

Vargas · 14/07/2022 21:54

I always fold duvet back and let it air with windows open. Especially when hot Wink

bloodyunicorns · 14/07/2022 22:01

I air our bed every day. Windows open, duvet pulled back halfway.

Binfairy · 14/07/2022 22:16

Another bed airer here. Window permanently open. Bedding changed weekly. When I wake, bottom sheet is straightened, pillows shaken up and duvet folded back neatly. Just before leaving for work, duvet pulled up neatly. Bedroom is always tidy, fresh and welcoming.

bakewellbride · 14/07/2022 22:19

It's never occurred to me to air a bed - I had no idea it was a thing! I change the sheets weekly and always make the bed but now I'll add an airing to my routine. Thank you mumsnet!

SirChenjins · 14/07/2022 19:13

I air my bed with the windows open and I wear knickers in bed.

YANBU OP - making the bed straightaway is grim.

Me too (wear knickers, air the beds).

sunshineandshowers40 · 14/07/2022 22:24

I have never done this but now I know about it, I'm going to give it a go; good idea!

Svara · 14/07/2022 22:26

Bibbetybobbity · 14/07/2022 18:45

I do this- always pull the duvet back (neatly 😂) and let it air during the day, so it’s ‘made’ but the duvet is folded half way back.

I do this except if I'm home at the weekend I might pull the quilt up after an hour or two to protect sheets from cat fur

Hurstlandshome · 14/07/2022 22:27

I air my bed. Always have done! Its a family thing. It's still made, but duvet pulled back neatly half way! Does sound a bit bonkers now I think of it!

ozymandiusking · 14/07/2022 22:30

Why do some people wear knickers in bed?

Why do some people wear knickers in bed?

I don't want to change pyjama bottoms every day, it's much more washing
