…in thinking it’s nice to let your bed air before remaking it?

I see this all the time: make your bed immediately upon waking is good for your mental health.

I’ve always been told (by my admittedly domineering mother) that it’s better and more hygienic to air it out for an hour or two- with windows open for extra brownie points. I’ve done this childhood, but was told the other day it was weird by a colleague.

I have been told if you don’t air it, all your farts and bodily emissions will seep into your duvet, and then mattress eventually, but more that it is just “nice” to air it.

Now I don’t have a clue about this but really, but I still do it. What do you think?

People who make the bed without airing it are the same people who wear knickers for bed- I thought most women wore them, @StridTheKiller? Particularly at that time of the month?

Since we sweat around half a pint and presumably don't change our beds everyday then why wouldn't you air it out a bit? Especially in the summer.

Sexismdoesntrule · 14/07/2022 19:47

Fucking hell you’ve all got a lot of time on your hands.

I drag myself out of bed after 6 hours of broken sleep downstairs and the quilt lives in a mount in the centre until my two dictators allow me to return 15 hours later.

Bedding needs aired, my vulva doesn’t.

NellesVilla · 14/07/2022 19:48

Do you really see it all the time? Because that's the first time I've ever seen the claim that making your bed as soon as you get up is good for your mental health...- yes, often, @LordEmsworth - particularly on YouTube vlogs

I make my bed then fold my duvet down to the bottom, so I just unfold it at night
I was always told this to stop the bed bugs , as they love a warm bed... although I don't know how true it is

I do this- always pull the duvet back (neatly 😂) and let it air during the day, so it’s ‘made’ but the duvet is folded half way back.

Yep, this! I love the fresh air blowing through the window on to the bed. Lovely fresh bed!

eddiemairswife · 14/07/2022 19:52

Can't be bothered to make my bed so is always aired. Window permanently open unless temp is below zero or the wind is blowing directly into the room.

FourChimneys · 14/07/2022 19:56

Always air the bed here, and have windows open whatever the weather. It just feels nicer and fresher.

I air my bed and I wear knickers to bed – I fold the duvet down halfway, open all the windows and then whip off my pants and lay on my back with my legs in the air...

As I've said my sister tells me I must air my bed but the op is definitely correct that advisers on mental health and those struggling to keep their house tidy always say make your bed. I think it's to do with putting you in a daily routine which is vital for those two groups of people...of which I'm both! 😔

I would imagine the idea of making your bed being good for mental health is more a case of advising people not to just get out of the bed and just leave the duvet in a screwed up heap on top of the bed.

Pulling the duvet back and putting it neatly at the bottom of the bed, straightening the bottom sheet and plumping up the pillows then leaving the bed to air is certainly not going to be detrimental to anyone's mental heath.

Yodaisawally · 14/07/2022 20:04

I always make the bed but the duvet is triple folded to let the mattress air

cushioncovers · 14/07/2022 20:04

I always air my bed. I was taught that as a child. It dries it out and sunlight kills bacteria so it stays fresher for longer.

A580Hojas · 14/07/2022 20:09

Yanbu. I find all the immediate bed makers totally minging! I let mine air all day.

Zarzuela · 14/07/2022 20:20

I also air the bed, usually all day. Routine for me is, when DC brushing their teeth I go straighten bottom sheet, plump pillows, make bed for all of us.

Or since WfH became a thing, end of working day pop up and do all beds as a kind of marker that it's hometime.

Mol1628 · 14/07/2022 20:22

Pull back the duvet neatly and leave the windows open. Usually I turn and plump the pillows

katseyes7 · 14/07/2022 20:23

I always leave my bed turned down.
I just can't understand why anyone would get out of a bed they've sweated in all night (particularly just now) then put the covers straight back on.
I like my bedding and mattress to air properly.

GrouchyKiwi · 14/07/2022 20:26

Bedclothes are thrown back over the foot of the bed when I get up. I make the bed when I come back upstairs for my shower an hour or two later (or three at the weekend).

WordleGummidge · 14/07/2022 20:26

Gotta air your B in the morning and air your V at night.

MissMaple82 · 14/07/2022 20:28

No its not weirs, it makes perfect sense to air it out after sleeping in it, my parents do this and I do it it too

doitwithlove · 14/07/2022 20:34

👍🏼 for duvet pulled back during the day

RollingInTheCreek · 14/07/2022 20:34

I seem to be alone but I just make my bed when we both get out of it. I also don’t throw the windows open immediately especially from September onwards and DEFINITELY won’t be this year. Any heating we are paying for stays in the house! Bed is never damp or musty or smelly! I wash the sheets every week or so. We don’t use a duvet just a sheet when it’s as hot as it has been recently though.

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 14/07/2022 20:35

I pull the duvet off when I wake up, get ready have breakfast etc and then make the bed. Gives it a couple of hours to air out with an open window, sometimes I spray some nice room spray in it too.

TabithaTittlemouse · 14/07/2022 20:36

I’ve always aired my bed. It’s automatic when getting out of bed.

Redpriestandmozart · 14/07/2022 20:42

I fold the duvet back and air the bed every morning until mid-afternoon. I have literally turned into my mother!
