To think people don’t seem to understand how hot it is predicted to be next week?

On threads expressing concern re the heat, people keep saying ‘what do you think they do in hotter countries’?

According to my BBC weather app, next Monday and Tuesdays predictions are:

35 in Lahore, Pakistan
32/33 degrees in Miami, Florida
33 and 32 degrees in Kingston, Jamaica
29 degrees in Mali (which is the worlds hottest country, apparently!)
30 in the Maldives
38 and 35 in Spain.

The current predictions for me are 36 and 37 degrees.

AIBU to think some posters don’t realise we are talking about temperatures hotter than some of the hottest countries in the world!?

this is something to be enjoyed

It is definitely that

SleeplessInEngland · 15/07/2022 20:23

Cool, now there are trolls saying we should enjoy 40 degrees. Bit transparent, but it’s certainly a new topic to shitpost on I guess.

I worry about the elderly in rest homes with no air conditioning, they have limited power to put themselves in the shower, get themselves a cold drink, and sometimes signal distress. Should they just shut up and enjoy the heat? If anyone thinks that, have they spent time in a rest home and seen how limited the ability of so many residents is, when it comes to mitigate their discomfort?

Do they lack resilience? What about their family? What about their carers?

I do understand that some people will have a bad time and some people will die.

Much like when I responsibly enjoy alcohol though I don't dwell on the millions of people who die worldwide from alcohol related illness, all seems a bit mawkish

I really love and enjoy hot weather, I live in a country that doesn't often facilitate that enjoyment and I intend to stick every moment of enjoyment from it I can. I am from a country where it's this hot for most of the year

fwiw I am currently sat in a supported living home with my elderly mum who has dementia and I am her main carer

I honestly don't care whether you enjoy it or not.

Shmithecat2 · 15/07/2022 20:30

Bit of both. I lived in Saudi for 7 years and managed in temps +10°c more for far longer periods of time, but then there was aircon everywhere. The actual temperature in the UK doesn't worry me - it's the humidity that makes it so intolerable (Riyadh has very low humidity, although Jeddah was always damp and sweaty). Just be sensible - stay out of the sun and keep hydrated.

A580Hojas · 15/07/2022 20:32

"I think people are just sick of the moaning. It is hot and we are all feeling hot. Moaning about it doesn't change anything, it just makes people grumpy."

Couldn't put it better. Only a tiny minority of people are going to enjoy 40 degree heat (in specific circumstances including pools and air con). The rest of us just need to get on with it without scare-mongering.

I know that France declared thousands of excess deaths in a recent heatwave and it actually would be helpful to know who those people were and what were their living circumstances. Because we could then collectively try to make things better. The average Mumsnetter, even the fat ones with health conditions and fair skin who don't like the summer - in which venn diagram I include myself - are not going to die if we use our common sense.

@NCHammer2022 It’s not about not giving a shit, it’s about your unnecessary dramatics! Ppl need to manage their own risks in life and there is absolutely no need whatsoever to be dying because of a couple of days of hot weather if you have access to cold water! If I was that worried that my poor mother with a heart condition was going to be in serious danger for those 2 days, I’d find the nearest hotel with air con and a pool and check her in! You won’t though will you because you’re not actually concerned you just love to moan!

Goldencarp · 15/07/2022 20:38

It’s 30/31 where I am on the south coast. Where is it 36/37?

Typing on a forum that I feel a bit worried about my elderly mum with health problems and that it’s irritating to see all the dismissive posts is dramatics? Righto. I hope you have a lovely time in the sun. Enjoy it hun, the hotter the better innit.

It’s (possibly) 40/37 in London on Monday and Tuesday.

KittenKong · 15/07/2022 20:52

Crap on a cracker - I’m at a conference on Monday. I’m going to be a sweaty mess…

@A580Hojas

I know that France declared thousands of excess deaths in a recent heatwave and it actually would be helpful to know who those people were and what were their living circumstances.

I posted about exactly that earlier today on but there are so many threads about the UK heatwave I've forgotten where I put my post...so apologies if this is a repeat of sorts from upthread.

In a nutshell - the infamous French heatwave was in 2003 and the really important point IMHO is that the whole scenario in Europe/France, especially in terms of heatwave duration, was completely different to anything being forecast for the UK in the next few days. It's not really a parallel situation at all to what's supposed to be in store for the UK.

The major difference was that the French/Europe event lasted several months, instead of a day or two, and there was a really nasty peak period of over a week where there were very high temperatures in Northern France (>40 degrees)every day. It wasn't just a couple of very hot days and then a breakdown.

We were in southern France at the time, kids in tow for the whole thing and where we were it was certainly hot but not unbearable.

The wiki piece, on this, France subsection, discusses societal issues:

I'm Lincolnshire, predicted 39 here on Tuesday!

ThePumpkinPatch · 15/07/2022 20:57

It's changed now, it's no longer going to be in the thirties. My area is predicted a high of 27 for Tuesday when earlier it was predicted to be 39. Panic over!

Flipping heck. I thought the south was supposed to be hotter! Looks like we’re getting off lightly. We also get a breeze from the sea thank goodness.

Kteeb1 · 15/07/2022 20:59

What people don't get when comparing us to hot countries is that we are not geared up for it. Other countries are. We don't dress the same or have the same air con or houses designed to keep cool. We dont have the right infrastructure. Even our bodies aren't used to it. That's why it's concerning for 2 days.

KittenKong · 15/07/2022 21:01

I’m Scottish. Generally we don’t do heat (although my parents loved the heat - isn’t be hot enough for them)

3luckystars · 15/07/2022 21:06

Is this like when you watch the news and they start reporting the worst possible scenario and then row back but by bit and it’s not actually that bad?

hopefully the predictions are wrong and it will just be a warm day in the late 20s and we can all start talking about Boris again

Of course most people with an ounce of common sense "get" it. Or are you saying you are better informed than the average person?

The highest temperature ever recorded on earth was in 1913. Who knows where? I do (it's one of those bits of trivia that stuck with me Grin, think I learned it from my parents who visited the place many years later) and came very handy in a recent pub quiz when most were guessing somewhere in Africa, Australia or India.

OneTC · 15/07/2022 21:20

Death valley but I'm guessing that'd be pretty high on the list of guesses still

We dress a lot more casually than europeans.

Our houses are insulated which keeps houses cooler than they would be if not properly insulated.

I know that many european countries have government information ads everywhere warning people to turn up their aircon (ie less cold) to incur less energy emissions.

brokenandbrokenx · 15/07/2022 21:28

Go to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil during summer and you'll easily get 40 degrees at night!

AJTommo · 15/07/2022 21:41

Haven't RTFT but IMO it's the heat plus the humidity that make it so very unpleasant here. Dry heat seems a tad more bearable.

OneTC · 15/07/2022 21:44

Humidity has actually been really low this summer by comparison.

On the hot days they're predicting 30%

AJTommo · 15/07/2022 21:50

Well that's something to be grateful for then! I live in a valley & it always feels really close but it might well be me!
