To think people don’t seem to understand how hot it is predicted to be next week?

On threads expressing concern re the heat, people keep saying ‘what do you think they do in hotter countries’?

According to my BBC weather app, next Monday and Tuesdays predictions are:

35 in Lahore, Pakistan
32/33 degrees in Miami, Florida
33 and 32 degrees in Kingston, Jamaica
29 degrees in Mali (which is the worlds hottest country, apparently!)
30 in the Maldives
38 and 35 in Spain.

The current predictions for me are 36 and 37 degrees.

AIBU to think some posters don’t realise we are talking about temperatures hotter than some of the hottest countries in the world!?

Or just get up early enough to miss the hot temperatures, I think not walking them at all is just lazy.

Exactly. You do a long walk in the early morning, when it's coolest.

And in other countries they walk them in the morning but also in the evening, and evenings are still boiling hot, we saw this in Madrid recently walking them around 8 or 9 at night but the temps were still about 35ish although no bright sun by then obviously

OneTC · 15/07/2022 19:02

Can't wait for it personally, wish it was gonna stick around for longer

People have been warned and need to take accountability and respnsibility themselves.

We don’t need to dumb everything down and make rules for the dumbest in society, which sadly many governments do.

FreddieMercurysCat · 15/07/2022 19:05

the hottest I ever experienced was 42°C in Crete a few years back. It was insanely awful. I am not looking forward to it. We have a top boss who has said to start an hour early and we’ll be shutting down and be gone at noon (paid in full) both days. I love my boss. However, I do feel sorry for DS2, he’s going to melt at school.

gimmepeaceandsky · 15/07/2022 19:06

Ok.

The government are telling us that there is a risk to life in people without any health related vulerabilities.

I sincerely hope (and expect) it's not as bad as forecast, but it's not "people" making a drama of it.

dillydally24 · 15/07/2022 19:16

I think people don't take it seriously enough at all! It will be 40 degrees in London on Monday. I have a baby, a toddler and a big fluffy dog. We will venture out early in the morning (me and the kids), but it is not safe for our dog to be out and he will stay home all day. We have two portable air conditioners. We use them to keep the house cool downstairs during the day, then switch them on in the kids' bedrooms at night. There is no way I would be comfortable looking after the kids and dogs in this weather without air conditioning. London is not set up for warm weather and we are not acclimatized to it, so don't tell me I'm overreacting.

GylesBrandrethNewJumper · 15/07/2022 19:20

London is not set up for warm weather

Nowher in the UK is.

It also isn't just London that is experiencing the extreme btw.

We live 2 hours from London and are forcast 39.

AtavisticFrogface · 15/07/2022 19:21

It's different in hot countries with the regular, prolonged high temperatures which people can more easily adapt to (I've lived in Dubai); the few very hot days experienced in the UK do not allow us long enough to implement coping strategies, adapt and acclimatise.... just like the odd days of snow which always (understandably) take us by surprise..

gimmepeaceandsky · 15/07/2022 19:07

Well aren't you a ray of sunshine.

I do think that some people are building themselves up into a frenzy, but to say people won't die is just not true.

A risk to life warning has been issued.

ilovechocolate07 · 15/07/2022 19:31

Local high schools coming but primaries where the children are more at risk of heatstroke still open. I doubt the staff will be well enough to be back on the Tuesday. Some colleagues were ill through the night on Tuesday and it was 32° max.

Fucking lucky? Get a bloody grip. 40 in the UK is not lucky, it’s hotter than it has ever been before and deeply unpleasant. No I’m sure I won’t “fucking die” but I’m concerned about my mum who has heart problems and lives right in the middle of the red warning zone. Fuck her though, right, so long as your enjoy it.

Shauny098 · 15/07/2022 19:57

Omg, what am I reading! What did ppl do in hot countries without air conditioning!?……”but they’re acclimatised we are not”….what do ppl do when they go on holiday to a hot country that could easily reach 36 degrees but haven’t got air con in their cheap self catering apartment, they enjoy the hot weather and if they get too hot they dip in the pool….”but I don’t own a pool”….do you own a bath or a shower? Get in it! Jesus Christ, this thread makes me look forward to when WW3 ends the lot of us 🤦🏼‍♀️

Oh for gods sake! It's a risk to life if you're a bloody halfwit yes. If you stay out of the blazing sun, drink lots of water and don't drown in a river you're not going to die are you?

Shauny098 · 15/07/2022 19:59

@NCHammer2022 there are ways that exist to cool the woman down if her life is actually in danger, GET A GRIP!

Shauny098 · 15/07/2022 20:01

@50mg A risk to life if you don’t stay hydrated and stay in the shade, like any person with an ounce of common sense will do!

Mrsbluesk1 · 15/07/2022 20:03

I’ve lived in a very hot country. When I had a home built, the architect said we had to conform to window position rules to avoid the home getting too hot most of the year. The hottest temperature was 32 degrees. We had air conditioning units in all areas. Anything near 40 degrees is horrible. It’s hard to breath. I feel for those with Asthma or chest problems, heart problems, water retention, diabetes. All these conditions are made worse by heat.

Mollymoostoo · 15/07/2022 20:04

I think people are just sick of the moaning. It is hot and we are all feeling hot. Moaning about it doesn't change anything, it just makes people grumpy.

We can prepare, the pound shop sells dog cool mats which are amazing and ice an be made easily. Keeping curtains closed all day can keep the jouse cool.

My ex is from Albania and we used to stay all summer there. They don't go out in midday sun and keep the curtains closed. People dress better and are used to the sun. Sleeping downstairs also helps and not doing too much.

Schools should not be open all day here, they close during the hottest hours in most countries in the med.

I know that, I’m not a fucking moron - but there are many people all over this thread and others who are still under the impression this is something to be enjoyed “it’s just summer”, “what’s the fuss about” etc etc. They are the ones who need to get a fucking grip, not the people like me who are showing concern for relatives and other people WHOSE HEALTH IS AT RISK FROM THIS WEATHER. There were at least a few thousand excess deaths relating to heat last summer and it wasn’t even a hot one. You get a fucking grip. Some of us give a shit about people other than ourselves.

mbosnz · 15/07/2022 20:13

I worry about the elderly in rest homes with no air conditioning, they have limited power to put themselves in the shower, get themselves a cold drink, and sometimes signal distress. Should they just shut up and enjoy the heat? If anyone thinks that, have they spent time in a rest home and seen how limited the ability of so many residents is, when it comes to mitigate their discomfort?

Do they lack resilience? What about their family? What about their carers?
