To go to a restaurant with Covid

User112 · 14/07/2022 16:06

Mil has covid but zero symptoms. It’s her birthday on Saturday, AIBU to keep our reservation at a restaurant for a family meal? What are the current rules around covid? We have been at inlaws house, SILs kids are still there (she looks after them and their schools break early).

NONE of us are positive, incl FIL. Mil tested because she went out with someone who tested positive.

The current rules are basically that there are none. You are advised to avoid people for 5 days after testing positive, and avoiding CV/CEV people for 10 days.

But going to a restaurant when you know you have Covid is a pretty shitty thing to do.

The hate you are getting on this thread is something else though. It is like being back in 2020. Your MIL is symptom free, and if she had not tested, would be unaware she had Covid. Maybe she could test again on the day of the meal and let whatever the result is dictate what you do.

HappyMediocreTime · 14/07/2022 19:30

My dad is recovering from pneumonia. Okay, okay, so he probably shouldn't be going anywhere. But it means even when he's recovered he's probably vulnerable. I wouldn't be pleased if he caught covid off someone 'who felt fine' and ended up sitting at a table near him.

Borgonzola · 14/07/2022 19:44

@CallOnMe you make really good points. My dad has been CV for about 20 years so is used to taking precautions - cancelling events if people in attendance are ill, not taking public transport in winter, avoiding shaking hands with people, etc. my family are all used to having the flu jab every year (because he can't), not going to see him if we're ill, etc. You can tell that there are people in the world who've never had to think twice or be inconvenienced by their own health, or those of others.

Just go! You'd go if you had a cold, so there's no difference. Covid is here to stay, & NOT a serious illness. Ignore all the hysterical types who just love making a drama of it all.

See, this is what annoys me. I get people coming in to work with horrendous colds saying 'it's okay, it's just a cold'. Well no shit, but I don't want that either! If you are infectious with anything, not just covid, stay at home and keep your stinking germs to yourself!

Maybe they have a pretty strict sickness policy at their place of work.
People tend to go to work with a bad cold because they don't want to end up being hauled into the office.

All those people who go on about working for 3 decades and have never had a day off sick... I can guarantee that they turned up to work with stinking colds and spread them about.

DuvetHugger · 14/07/2022 20:32

If I can cancel my 40th meal because I had covid, then so can you

Sugarplumfairy65 · 14/07/2022 20:44

Scianel · 14/07/2022 17:31

Why are people still testing?

Also cases aren't on the rise - wave has peaked, it's dropping off as it does, and that overall pattern isn't going to look different whether one person's MIL goes out for their birthday or not.

Because there are still 2.5 million cev people in the country who haven't aquired any protection from the vaccines and the government refuses to fund evushield for who have had no choice other than to go back to work and school. They are frightened because of fuckers like you without a brain cell. Some of them may be working in that restaurant or have family members who do.

Willyoujustbequiet · 14/07/2022 20:46

This would be so disgustingly selfish.

Shame on you..

It's my place of work, they are my patients. So no need for them to be there as we can reschedule for the week after etc. And I'm the one that doesn't get paid if I then get whatever they pass on to me and go off sick.

@Hbh17
you are lucky that you are in a situation to be able to think that.

My DH is CEV - to look at him you wouldn’t know it, he looks healthy and exercises twice a week in martial art classes and works full time etc But if he got COVID - even after his vaccinations and 3 (yes 3) bosters he would be gravely ill.
We have dc who are young adults they are out and about living their lives and we want to go out and on holiday etc We are doing things, but thinking and choosing carefully where we go to but we know that as careful as we can be there will be some person around the corner who trots out….‘it’s just a cold …. It is not a serious illness’ .
He refuses to let this ruin his life - it’s gone on for two years where he really went nowhere other than the spare room to work.

We all need to live . But we can also respect each other.

To think that someone ( after everything we have been through and everything we know about infection and infection control ) would go to a restaurant be sitting there with a highly infectious disease just to have a meal which they could do another time is just selfish and wrong.

Mamai90 · 14/07/2022 20:51

What a bunch of selfish fuckers your in laws are. Are they usually this dim? I honestly can't believe what I'm reading!

Cases are on the rise. I work in a hospital and we have had more people admitted with Covid every day for the past two weeks.

brighterthanaluckypenny · 14/07/2022 20:55

One of my relatives has cancer.

Another one is awaiting test results for cancer.

One of my mates keeps threatening to top himself because he has Long Covid, his body has been wrecked as a result and he doesn't see the point in living anymore.

Several of my mates have milder Long Covid symptoms... they're not suicidal like the other guy, but they're not able to do as much as they used to.

But sure, to hell with anyone else's loved ones. Let MIL spread Covid everywhere... let the bodies pile high.

Some people are in a difficult position where they can't afford not to work and they're not paid full sick pay.

There's nothing difficult about rescheduling a birthday meal. Going ahead would be a purely selfish decision. Forget what this shower of shit Government have decreed legal and consider the morality of the situation.

Asymptomatic in one person is fatal/life-limiting to another.

Londontown12 · 14/07/2022 21:06

And this is why I won’t go to the cinema with my daughter !!
she is very annoyed with me !
I am on immune suppressant medication and my last blood test I am very suppressed !
if people just stayed home with covid myself and others wouldn’t be so scared to enjoy a bit of normality.
so yes she should cancel !!

I gave Covid to two CEV people before I even know I had it.
One of them ended up with blood clots last time she had Covid.
This new variant is easily spread, and people are spreading it before they know they have it.

ilovesooty · 14/07/2022 21:23

Your husband's family seemingly have no moral compass. Of course you should reschedule the meal.

Tigofigo · 14/07/2022 21:23

Ignoring the moral question for a moment...

If your MIL was diligent enough to test despite not having any symptoms, that suggests she is still quite cautious about having and spreading Covid so she probably would cancel it herself, no? What's MIL saying? Surely that's more important than what SIL thinks?

Mulberry974 · 14/07/2022 21:48

Two years of this and you are asking whether your Mil should infect other people just for a meal? Don't be utterly selfish, a meal can be postponed.

Scianel · 14/07/2022 21:55

They are frightened because of fuckers like you without a brain cell

You don't get to swear at me under the guise of the moral high ground, fuck right off.

GoSomewhereThatDoes · 14/07/2022 22:05

I think my nephew has Norovirus. Your DH and his family don’t mind if I bring him round to yours for a couple of hours, do they? He can sit on your DH’s lap and sing Happy Birthday to your MiL. If she asks nicely, I’m sure he’d even help her blow her candles out. I mean, you’re all feeling fine, right? And if you do catch it, it’s just an upset stomach. We’re all going to have an upset stomach at some point.

I’m CEV and quite a few people around me don’t understand why I’m still not going to restaurants or the cinema etc now that things are ‘back to normal’ 🙄
