How do you pronounce Tortoise?

I noticed yesterday, when talking about this animal in a group, that everyone was pronouncing it 'toytoyce' while I would say, 'tortuss'.
I wonder if anyone finds this remotely interesting😆 or has a different way of saying it?

I say tor-tus but know lots of people who say tor-toice. Either is fine.

Someaddedsugar · 13/07/2022 06:58

Tor-toyce here!

Chiwi · 13/07/2022 06:59

Tor-tuss for sure

PinkButtercups · 13/07/2022 06:59

Tor-toise for me too!

Lolly86 · 13/07/2022 07:00

Tor-tuss here 🐢

Twiglets1 · 13/07/2022 07:00

Georgieporgie29 · 13/07/2022 07:00

Tor toyce

Veryverycalmnow · 13/07/2022 07:00

I don't mind tor- toise and I say that too, but it's the TOY part that I really don't agree with.

Tort -tuss, out loud, but in my head, tort -too-ice

coffeecupsandfairylights · 13/07/2022 07:06

Tor-toyce.

Ponoka7 · 13/07/2022 07:06

Tor-tise, but know people who say tor-tuss. I've just watched David Attenborough and he says tor-tuss. He says slowth, we sat sloth, though.

Agreed - there should definitely be an “r” pronounced there. But English is an intriguing language, full of anomalies. Most English people I know say “yog-urt” as opposed to “yo-gurt” in direct contradiction of how they pronounce other “yo” words such as yoga, Yogi Bear, etc. No one has ever been able to explain why - one of life’s many mysteries!

SpringIntoChaos · 13/07/2022 07:07

Tor toyce

I've never heard tor tuss -how do you get -uss from the digraph 'oi' (which makes an 'oy' sound)? I guess it's a regional thing?

onelittlefrog · 13/07/2022 07:08

I also wince a bit at toy-toyce! Although it is kind of endearing too, like how a child would say it.

Xiaoxiong · 13/07/2022 07:09

Tor-tiss. Actually more like tor-diss if I'm honest (non-English accent)

Clarinet1 · 13/07/2022 07:10

My DM used to say “They called him “Tortuss” because he taught us”.

MassiveSalad22 · 13/07/2022 07:14

Tor-toys, like it’s spelled

FangsForTheMemory · 13/07/2022 07:15

Tor-tuss. I thought tor-toyse might be American pronunciation then I remembered that’s tur-tul.

FuzzyPuffling · 13/07/2022 07:15

Tor-tuss.

I cant even recreate that, my mouth can't do it I've been trying over and over.

Torr-toise in my accent

MassiveSalad22 · 13/07/2022 07:18

MassiveSalad22 · 13/07/2022 07:14

Tor-toys, like it’s spelled

Although actually I just said to myself ‘the tortoise and the hare‘ and it came out as ‘tortuss’, so I think I use them interchangeably. Not that I say it much 😄

My DM used to say “They called him “Tortuss” because he taught us”.

Isn't that a quote from Alice in Wonderland?

When I was young I never heard it pronounced any other way.

BlusteryLake · 13/07/2022 07:20

Some people pronounce tortoise "turtle". Now that does wind me up 😂. One can swim and one can't people.....

ivykaty44 · 13/07/2022 07:21

Tour toise
