How do you pronounce Tortoise?

Veryverycalmnow · 13/07/2022 06:56

I noticed yesterday, when talking about this animal in a group, that everyone was pronouncing it 'toytoyce' while I would say, 'tortuss'.
I wonder if anyone finds this remotely interesting😆 or has a different way of saying it?

@Hollyhocksarenotmessy

Banana only has 2 different'a' for me.

(South east/London)

Both the 'NA' parts sound the same.

Buh-nah-nah

TheHateIsNotGood · 14/07/2022 21:47

Tortoys

RoundaboutRacer · 14/07/2022 21:48

Ok so I was wrong with banana.

Bah-nar-nuh

Husband pointed that out. Now we're falling about laughing saying banana with 3 matching vowels.

10/10 would recommend.

Bu-nu-nu

JasmineVioletRose · 14/07/2022 21:52

Tor-toise is very American sounding.

TheHateIsNotGood · 14/07/2022 21:55

And it took me over 50 years to realize that our Tortoys hadn't really "run away" like Dad had said.

Our Tortuss had probably died, but I actually believed Dad's joke for over half a century.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 14/07/2022 22:08

Tortuss.

And my 3 n sounds in banana are B'narnuh. But a soft r, maybe more like B'nahnuh.

I've said both more times in the last few minutes than I have in the last year I reckon!

I am turtley grateful for all your responses. I was anxious about something and this distracted me wonderfully. Thanks

Tor-tuss - I'm originally from the south east and I've never heard is pronounced differently. I live somewhere different but not too far away now and it is the same pronounciation. It's also pronounced that way on the Oxford Dictionaries website.

I think the other ways of saying it must have evolved from simply not knowing the 'correct' way it is pronounced as it does look like it should be said differently.

I infrequently hear people saying torTOYs. Indeed, there are a couple in the comments who think this is correct: it is not. It's sad to observe, but they pronounce it like that because they their parents haven't used any advanced vocabularly when talking to them, so they are simply saying what they've read in a book.

Stupid, goady comment Hmm

It is sad to observe someone on this thread who is ignorant of regional accent and dialect. And who thinks tortoise is "advanced vocabulary".

iliketartan · 21/10/2022 14:52

It's even sadder that this zombie has been revived.

PAFMO · 21/10/2022 14:55

Both pronunciations of "tortoise" are correct.
In UK English "banana" has two different pronunciations for the "a". The first and last are a neutral "schwa", the one in the middle is longer /a:/
And before I'd be so smug about language @Boogiepop I'd have a read of my own gobbledegook. Did your parents not teach you correct syntax then? Advanced or otherwise?

Aye, but at least we can put the smugster who revived it in their place.

soulinablackberrypie · 21/10/2022 14:58

Tortus. To those who say that's not logical, neither is the pronunciation of mortgage, lieutenant or any number of place-names. English is a language full of irregularities.

JulieMarooley · 21/10/2022 19:54

Tor-toyz.

5128gap · 21/10/2022 19:56

WTAF?

I say TorTOYS, as did my highly educated parents!

TamzinGrey · 21/10/2022 23:24

Tortoys
DH says Tortus and it really grates. I have considered LTB over this.

PrioritiseCalm · 22/10/2022 09:07

Tortuss

PrioritiseCalm · 22/10/2022 09:08

If you say torTOYCE where are you from?

Tortus

Not sure how anyone gets a 'y' in the first syllable! Re 'drawRing' I really find this annoying, same with 'lawR abiding' ..... I can understand letters being omitted by certain pronunciations but why on earth add unnecessary ones? Seems to be a posh people thing.

I'd say def NOT a "posh person thing". In my experience, posh people are more likely to omit sounds than add them. More like "dror ungh"
