I fucking hate the word chavvy.

And also wondered why Boris was in OP's garden.

I would have a bar in the garden (although they look like effort) but I wouldn't have a Boris in the garden.

ancientgran · 13/07/2022 17:25

I keep seeing this in Trending and reading it as Fed Up Of Seeing Boris in People's Gardens and thinking yeah I'd be fed up of that.

antelopevalley · 13/07/2022 17:26

An outdoor kitchen sounds great. What happens to it in the winter? Does it just quickly get yucky and weather damaged?

speakout · 13/07/2022 17:51

An outdoor kitchen seems a pita.
I can understand a clay pizza or a brick BBQ- but a whole kitchen?
Even hot countries like Greece or Italy don't bother with such a faff.

This thread should be bookmarked for foreign posters who want to understand class in Britain. It's got it all.

I have learnt a few things from this thread.
😂

I think a garden Boris would have its uses. You could attach the dartboard to it.

Charlize43 · 13/07/2022 18:04

It's not a tacky bar. It's a tiki bar. It's fun!

My father used to keep several bottles of cognac in his potting shed for when he was gardening.

He'd keep the crows away as well. He's been rocking the scarecrow look for decades, time to put it to good use.

NotQuiteUsual · 13/07/2022 18:08

They're not my thing, but they look like a perfectly good place to sit on a nice day with friends. Or make the most of a small outdoor space. Problem is, every single one I've seen without fail, has been pumping out 90s dance hits past 10 most warm weekend nights. So I do not have a happy association with them.

Bangolads · 13/07/2022 18:18

I can’t understand why you care? Are you insane? As for labelling them all tacky simply suggests to me that you’re a snob. Snobbery is never intelligent or noble- it’s always fearful and always stupid. You clearly feel incredibly threatened by other people’s harmless foibles. You sound bonkers, mean and definitely a little bit tacky.

Herejustforthisone · 13/07/2022 09:01

So apparently….

Outside kitchen = chic, aspirational, sign of wealth.

Outside bar = ‘chavvy’, common, indicator of disturbing fun, wild parties (though the OP claims to host these without a bar), a sign that the owners deserve your derision.

Anyone with a garden bar who might be feeling overwhelmed by the bile pouring forth on this thread, just stick a Baby Belling in it and you’ll be grand. All the MNers sipping Chablis from their sofas will want an invitation.

What if you have an outdoor kitchen and an outdoor bar, as I do, and are partial to both Chablis and Porn Star Martinis? Where do you fit in?

Get togethers in gardens are very much his thing, as we know. You could never have a "party" though, it would always have to be a "meeting"

shaggpilecarpet · 13/07/2022 18:30

All fun and games when you're at one, less so next door to one in a terraced house 😞

Yerroblemom1923 · 13/07/2022 18:40

@SoupDragon just nothing ostentatious basically.

the80sweregreat · 13/07/2022 19:05

I Suppose that outdoor kitchens are still undercover really with decent covers from Homebase for the winter time?
I wouldn't fit any of that in my garden it's just. a small gas bottle bbq here !
Pizza is put in the oven (indoors )

Mattress, sofa or white goods in front garden, time spent in sportswear hugely disproportionate to time spent exercising, member of one of those weird families where uncles and/or aunts are same age or younger than niblings, grey French bulldog to match grey crushed velvet sofa (bonus points if on the "never never"), visits Skegness and enjoys it, white financed Audi, wears one of those wanky GG belts

This is a really gross thing to have written. Looking down your nose at people for absolutely no reason and without knowing them.

MeljustMel · 13/07/2022 21:02

I literally joined today and honestly, there is some pure poison being spouted here. If people said something about race, religion, disability, gender, sexuality and such like, it would be pounced upon. But the comments about class and playground-style teasing have been just nasty.

There are many people who are successful who came from the working classes. Do those who are looking down their nose at others know their own family history? I'm thinking of some celebrities who discover that their distant relatives were in workhouses. And yet, here many people are, scoffing at people who are making the best of what they have. Some of whom have not been privileged in life, others who are managing mental illness, struggling through lockdown, trying to improve and enjoy their space. THEIR space.

I'm gobsmacked. Is this what you are like? Would you say this nasty, judgemental garbage to someone's face? If not, why is it okay to say it on here?

Look at your own affairs and examine the way you are expressing your vile thoughts with no consideration of others' feelings.

On balance, there are some people who are trying to be nice and fair. And those who have been brave enough to admit they have a bar.

There are others who are hurt and offended, myself included. I am hurt for others, not myself because people do things for a reason and to label a behaviour is shallow without understanding the why. If you dig deeper, every single bar owner will have a story that will be interesting. It's THEIR story and you are just writing them off!

I have some very eclectic neighbours. I've been living next door to a jungle for four years and the man recently passed away. That wasn't nice to live next to, especially as I couldn't physically help because I'm disabled. Others tried to say nasty things but it wasn't right. This man served in the navy and obviously needed help.

Another neighbour has a gypsy caravan and another has plastic plants that they're proud of. But you know what, they are their gardens, their heritage, their budget and these things are an expression of something many of you are missing. Hardly anyone has relayed a nice reason as to why there are these bars. Family & community, hobbies and mental well-being, craftsmanship, some may even be housebound and are being creative with their space.

Instead, words like tacky and chav have been thrown around flippantly and this is narrow-minded and mean.

I'm not going to stay around. I am appalled and don't want to be around this type of forum.

But to those of you who were courteous and open-minded, I thank you for not lowering yourselves to such mean-spiritedness. Thank you for your bravery in the face of hostility and for defending your bars! Enjoy!

Peace and love.

Yerroblemom1923 · 13/07/2022 21:16

It's not about being working class. I consider myself working class, it's more about taste. White goods and sofas and Audis outside houses are all a bit "Benefits Street" so if we're seriously looking into Class here we're probably talking of Charles Murray's the Underclass. Not a nice term, but a good few steps below WC.

White goods? Do the middle and upper class not have fridges, freezers, washing machines and dishwashers?
