@Ori1 the worrying thing is I didn't even feel that surprised!

isthismylifenow · 13/07/2022 15:48

It's called an entertainment area in other countries (well mine anyway).

This is the first time I've heard of an entertainment area being called a 'bar in the garden' 😀

They aren't that unusual and neither are they tacky. They aren't the 'in thing' either as most of our houses have them and have done for years.

the80sweregreat · 13/07/2022 15:49

I saw Boris in the title too
His probably got his head held high in a pub garden as we speak. I bet he'll get a tiki bar in his new place

Crystalvas · 13/07/2022 15:55

Oh well its their garden, their business.

That's not a gazebo, that's a bloody marquee!

Perfect for this weather.

Mulhollandmagoo · 13/07/2022 16:09

I wouldn't have one cos we wouldn't use it, but I'm also not really arsed about other people having them either. I'd be miffed if someone wanted to put one in my garden, but if they're putting them in their own garden and not affecting me in the slightest it's quite unreasonable to be fussed I think.

Yeah it's a bit big . Took 250kg off post mix in pots stop the damn thing flying away. The whole thing looks much better this year, these photos were taken last year when it was still part building site. I was told I was stupid for waiting a big sand pit but my nephews and grandsons love it.... and most adults have to have a go on the digger the first time they see it 😂

MsTSwift · 13/07/2022 16:22

I’m quite posh but have a hot tub. I read quietly in mine. Not sure how that fits in.

bluenameblue · 13/07/2022 16:36

when we were younger someone dad had built in himself from scrap wood. that's cool. buy your own pre cut 'tiki bar' isn't cool anymore. it was like 20 years ago. maybe even 10

hazandduck · 13/07/2022 16:38

I like the idea of this! Or maybe tea shop? I don’t drink but we have a bar. Our garden is big and very steep, so once you go ‘up the top,’ you’re far enough from the house for it to be a PITA to go back down. I had the bar built as a surprise for my husbands 30th, mainly so he can have cold drinks when we are up the garden, my dad and brother built it in one weekend from scratch miraculously and an electrician friend did the electrics for free. We have had many afternoon teas up there with our little girls 😄

We use it as a base for hosting barbecues or summer dinner parties etc (have a pizza oven and fire pit too for extra tackiness).

We also have a summerhouse where I can retreat to paint or read, then have decking for every day dining and a veggie plot, rewilded section for the bees, play area with slide, sandpit, climbing wall etc, and washing line, in the ‘lower sections’ of the garden.

We are not party animals by any stretch. I had no idea it was tacky when I had it built a few years ago! But I do love ours 😄

hazandduck · 13/07/2022 16:38

Oops sorry I missed off the quote - a previous poster said it could be a coffee bar!

I haven't read the thread but came on to say I read it as Boris! I'm glad it's not just me Grin

(Horrible vision of tousled blond mop appearing randomly out of a hedge, blustering inanely)

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 13/07/2022 16:41

Yes I'm fed up with seeing them too.
I no longer carry a small pair of steps in order to peer over people's fences and I have also taken the battery out of my drone so I can't inadvertly catch sight of one whilst having a 'sticky beak' into people's gardens. 👀

steye classeye

the80sweregreat · 13/07/2022 16:51

Can you imagine Boris Johnson's tiki bar?
The Boris arms , sponsored by others with expensive paint and wallpaper
Pictures of himself everywhere on a notice board. Union jacks draped around the outside
Maybe a bit too tacky for Carrie though

Carla2601 · 13/07/2022 16:53

Nosey and classist…..I’d look for a hobby rather than being mad about something that isn’t impacting you

MyatheSiren · 13/07/2022 16:53

YABU, you sound like fun, what gives you the right to judge what people have in their garden.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 13/07/2022 16:53

StarDolphins · 12/07/2022 23:16

@crosbystillsandmash correct yes, I’m telling you to lighten up! We’ll done you! I’ve left emojis out so as to not confuse you!

🤣🤣👏

frogswimming · 13/07/2022 16:57

I think an outdoor kitchen with a barbecue, sink, pizza oven, fridge is the posh version.

DurhamDurham · 13/07/2022 17:00

I have v fun and wild parties without a bar

Of course you do Op, I bet you're a hoot at parties.

alphons · 13/07/2022 17:02

This thread should be bookmarked for foreign posters who want to understand class in Britain. It's got it all.

Hadjab · 13/07/2022 17:13

SpiritRidingFree · 13/07/2022 03:32

We have an outdoor kitchen/bar, with a plumbed in sink and and countertops for the bar/serving food. Loads of fun, we love to host family and friends. Couldn’t care less if anyone calls me chav!
Let’s see your back garden OP.

@SpiritRidingFree is that the outdoor kitchen unit from Ikea?

Dreamwhisper · 13/07/2022 17:25

Mybumlooksbig · 12/07/2022 22:31

I am a total snob, sorry.
I have v fun and wild parties without a bar.
Scrolled through Drainbook earlier and there seemed to be ALOT of people showing their home bars off , maybe I'm bitter because I'm sat drinking my white wine on the sofa.....

I don't get it though.

Being a snob implies you think you're better than people because of, normally, your financial status, social circle or "class".

How can you simultaneously be a snob yet also associate with multiple people who have garden bars.

Something doesn't add up... You must just be jel.
