I think telling over people you have fun and wild parties is chavvy and tacky as hell, to be honest.

TheKeatingFive · 13/07/2022 13:02

I'm not sure I could be arsed with a bar (especially given I mostly drink wine) but I'd love a sex pond. And a pizza oven.

Wind your neck in OP, people can enjoy their gardens as they choose.

On an unrelated note... I've noticed several posts lately referring to over people.
Is it supposed to be "other"?
Seems to be evolving into another should of thing.

maddiemookins16mum · 13/07/2022 13:09

YANBU, they are common. But we can’t discuss class on here.

Loics · 13/07/2022 13:13

They are tacky, yes. Must be annoying for neighbours who have to listen to the parties, etc. in it too.

Itdoesntreallymatter · 13/07/2022 13:17

MichelleScarn · 12/07/2022 22:28

How does it affect you what other people do in their own garden?
Oh are you NIMBY?

Surely it's a NIYBY?

OP, you sound like the nightmarish people where I live who don't like people to hang laundry up on balconies, and would much prefer them to mould up their home or sink hundreds of pounds on tumble drying because you find the site of someone else's knickers fury inducing.

CaptainHogwash · 13/07/2022 13:19

My mum's neighbours have one and it's possibly the most inconsiderate thing you can imagine - although that fits in perfectly with their general antics. They're in it till late at night, noisy and above all have the kind of lighting you generally find in prison camps. I think the bar is potentially a great idea if it's yours, and potentially a nightmare if you happen to live near someone with one.

Itdoesntreallymatter · 13/07/2022 13:20

SarahSissions · 13/07/2022 11:46

Rishi Sunack wouldn’t be friends with someone with a bar in their garden

Fishy Rish! has friends?!!!

Working class friends!

Well, not working class.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 13/07/2022 13:23

DB's best friend has one - not quite in garden but very near to outside, complete with fire pit and loud music.

I don't think he's chavvy but the noise generated by it has meant that NDN's in his maisonette upstairs sold their part of the house (which DB's friend wanted to buy to make into one larger house) without informing DB's friend (they'd made noise complaints).

Chav stands for council housed and violent. Used to be used to describe Vikki Pollard type people but I see it more commonly used to mean "common" and/or working class. I don't know what context OP was using it in though.

This etymology is crap. There's absolutely no evidence that that's the origin of the word.

It's possible, OP, to agree with both your points. One might think that they are chavvy as fuck, and also think that people can do what they like in their own garden.

Me, I think that SUVs are chavvy as fuck, but it would hardly be reasonable to knock on someone's door and say, "Can you get rid of that car outside your house please. It's dead vulgar."

I'm with you on this!

Sceptre86 · 13/07/2022 13:27

My friend has one in her garden and it looks fantastic. I don't drink but cam totally see qhybyou qoupd want one if you do. It gives a bit of a sense of occasion than just sipping on wine through dinner.

Sceptre86 · 13/07/2022 13:28

*why you would even!

SomethingOnce · 13/07/2022 13:31

You’d have to be half cut to want to get in the accompanying hot tub. Bleurgh!

We have a bar in our back garden and it's great for socialising. My hubby has decorated it with his love of the Beatles and 80s films and we love it! I don't class myself as Chavy ??!!?? We have friends and family round and have a few drinks or my hubby and I will sit and play cards or watch a film enjoying the sun at the bar. We are very courteous of our neighbours never have loud music on and are very respectful. Love our bar

Sounds fab.

There are a lot of things I don't like but I wouldn't start a thread about it. I have a couple of friends who have them and they have beautiful homes too.

Squaffle · 13/07/2022 13:34

Not read the whole thread but just wanted to add... bar humbug. That will be all.

Im fed up of being around drunk people. The drinking culture in this country is shocking.

Where are you going all the time to be fed up of being around drunk people? If it's the pub then there is an easy solution.

Council housed and violent? I’m afraid not.
There has been much discussion over the origin of the term. The Romany word chavi - meaning child - was recorded in the 19th Century. Others argue it's from "Chatham average", a disparaging reference to the inhabitants of the Kent town.

Jalisco · 13/07/2022 13:50

I have more important things to do with my life than nose in other peoples gardens. I suggest finding a life as a more useful occupation for your time.

alwaysontheloo · 13/07/2022 13:54

Yes horrible. Normally erected at the farthest point from owner's house closer to a neighbour. They, along with hot tubs and the, really should be outlawed, 'garden cinemas' can get in the bin. 🗑 gonna need a bigger bin...

This. They are utterly dreadful.

Tiredalwaystired · 13/07/2022 13:54

No it doesn’t.

Sorry that was supposed to include a quote to the person who mentioned the origin of the word chav.

ReneBumsWombats · 13/07/2022 13:56

SoupDragon · 13/07/2022 11:50

It is as much, yes.

It's not sneering at the upper classes, it's sneering at people who perceive themselves to be among the upper classes.

zaza687 · 13/07/2022 13:57

I think tramoplines in front gardens are chavvy not this
