Cliche sayings that grind your gears!

Am I the only one who finds cliche sayings e.g. Facebook quotes Instagram quotes highly annoying. I feel like a lot of people used them to self soothe but I can’t help but find them extremely annoying especially the super obvious ones.

Some of the many that annoy me are:
I am working on me.
If they don’t accept you at your worst, they don’t deserve you at your best.

What cliche quotes or sayings grind your gears?

"Grinds your gears".

Mummommy · 11/07/2022 01:59

@DecimatedDreams I knew that was coming!

‘IYSWIM’

I seethe when people add this to their posts. It is never necessary and contributes nothing meaningful to whatever is being said. It looks gimmicky and dated, like a granny typing LOL or using obsolete slang.

steviewiththecankles · 11/07/2022 03:05

For me it’s my truth, his truth etc. It always sounds so false, like it’s not going to be the full truth.

Dance like nobody's watching

ChampagneLassie · 11/07/2022 03:20

God I hate these, things. Particularly when written in a jazzy script on a canvus wall art. My DP and I used to have a game to send each other screenshots of the worst ones. A beauty salon I used to frequent posted this on their SM. 🤣

@steviewiththecankles How could I forget this, “Speaking my truth” “Living in my truth” is probably top of my list!

@ChampagneLassie yes don’t get me started on the annoying quotes in farmhouse cursive phase!

Happy Mummy Happy Baby

It is what it is (especially on love island this year!)

Cheer up! (From anyone but particularly from strangers!)

Dance like nobody's watching

Now I have to defend this one. Late one night at a wedding do, most were drunk, I was sober, and one chap owned the dance floor. All by himself he danced very badly but was enjoying himself so much in a world of his own. I was bad laughing just watching him, he was really giving it wellie! When I hear this saying I think of him and it still makes me chuckle now, many years later.

Living your best life

Frangipanipie · 11/07/2022 05:47

‘It’s one of those isn’t it’..not sure if that’s a well know one but my colleague must say it at least 20 times each day. Doesn’t matter what it’s in connection with, I think he just says it to fill silences!

EntertainingandFactual · 11/07/2022 05:58

@DecimatedDreams

Just about to quote the same!
‘Grind your gears’ is a very annoying phrase!

Onlyhuman123 · 11/07/2022 06:03

Live, laugh, love. Gaaaahhhh makes me want to be sick.

It is what it is.

Rant over - this one really bugs me, especially when it ends a paragraph when someone is just having a minor whinge. Love, if you're going to 'rant' to it bloody properly!!!

Chikapu · 11/07/2022 06:24

Every time I see this I die a little bit inside, how the actual fuck do you believe in pink?

Anything stencilled onto a kitchen wall.

"This house is seasoned with love"

Makes me want to vomit, my Mum has loads of them!

pumpkinpie01 · 11/07/2022 06:29

@Chikapu never seen that before but that is truly awful !

NorthernLights5 · 11/07/2022 06:36

Self soothe!

Siameasy · 11/07/2022 06:38

“We’re all a little bit on the spectrum” said by the least likely candidate for it.

YnysMonCrone · 11/07/2022 06:38

"And just like that, he's a graduate/ last day if primary/ finished sixth form".
There's a lot of it about at the moment

Mercurial123 · 11/07/2022 06:42

"You go girl" used on MN but haven't heard anyone say it in years. It sounds rubbish and is patronising.

SpartacusNotEsther · 11/07/2022 06:53

'makes my teeth itch'

I've only ever been aware of it on mumsnet.
