Dog owners, are you walking them today?

Hello

I've been away for the weekend and just arrived home so couldn't get up at 5am when it's still cool to take my spaniel for a run like I would normally when we have weather like this.

I've seen that it's still going to be 26 degrees at 9pm tonight.

I feel really guilty when he goes without a walk however it just doesn't sound like it's going to cool down to a reasonable temperature tonight.

Are you giving walks a miss today/tonight?

We walked at 6.30 this morning, popped out again for a brief wander half an hour ago. She’s been wandering in and out of the garden all day, currently flat out asleep on the tiles.
5am walk tomorrow I think, probably through the woods and back across the fields.

Facefortheradio · 10/07/2022 18:56

@SirenSays I'm also a reactive rescue owner who walks early and late. It's a bugger when the weather is hot for many reasons but the worst is that my usually peaceful dog free places are busy!

Beauty of living in the UK though, it won't last too long!

Panamii · 10/07/2022 19:29

We walked at about 10 this morning when it was 25. It was through fields and he was fine. This is the coldest climate we've ever lived in. In hotter places even when the sun goes down it can be 25. Dogs would quite literally not get walked for months if people didn't take them out in 25 degree heat.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 10/07/2022 19:33

I dont like the heat but not walking a dog in 26 degrees is over the top, particularly if they wont get a walk all day.

26 degrees is heatstroke territory - it's advised by pretty much every single dog charity not to walk when it's that hot.

I'd rather my dog missed a walk than risked heatstroke.

FunDragon · 10/07/2022 19:36

Do you have any woodland nearby you can walk in? We drove ours to the woods this morning (to avoid paws on pavement) and let him walk there. It was really nice and cool.

Mommabear20 · 10/07/2022 19:38

Nope, they just have all day access to the garden so can lay in the shade or come inside if they need to, but equally can have a run around if they're feeling restless

BMW6 · 10/07/2022 19:43

I've been taking mine out really early, home by 8am. Take him out again after 8pm (he does sunbathe in our courtyard every so often, the fool)

jevoudrais · 10/07/2022 19:50

Definitely skip it. Mine went out at 7am today. Tuesday I've got to do the nursery run and I won't be able to get them walked before lunchtime so they won't go. They'll cope with playing together and sunbathing!

Satsumaonaplate · 10/07/2022 19:54

We live next to a park, so we take the dog there to do a poop (in wild areas and picked up of course!) - as he won't pooh in our garden. But a very very brief walk that takes 5 mins

minesalargered · 10/07/2022 19:57

Random, but why they (my dogs) choose to go and lie in the sunshine in the middle of the day, is beyond me when it's weather like this. Loons...

Early morning walk, out by 7am. Two tiny toilet walks in the day, they won't go to the toilet in the garden. House backs onto a field, so no hot pavements.

TrufflesForBreakfast · 10/07/2022 19:58

Yes I went out early this morning and will do so again in the next hour.

Teder · 10/07/2022 21:25

Curious long those cooling collars and mats actually do stay cool for? Are they good for overnight ?

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 10/07/2022 21:53

Our dog went out at 5am for a longer walk than usual.
He didn't go out later in the day. He's spent most of the day asleep on the cold kitchen tiles.

Yeah! My dog has a cool mat and unless it's been 3 hours or so it's like permanently sleeping on the cool side of the pillow. I have been known to use it when it's been super hot

Ooh thanks! What brand do you have please? 🙂

We have had it for 3+ years so can't remember sorry . Either a random one on Amazon or we got it from Pets at Home

DragonwithoutaDungeon · 10/07/2022 22:22

We're on summer walk schedule: sparrow fart and howl at the moon times here.

In between it's out for a quick toilet sticking to shady areas accompanied by lots of panting followed by melting into the floor when we get back inside. This is the DDog btw, not me Wink

Motorina · 10/07/2022 22:26

My beagles are really heat tolerant, so, yes, we do go out for a walk. I make sure we're near water although that's more for my peace of mind than anything, as they're not bothered and mostly ignore it. It does very much depend on the individual dog and their tolerance, though.

MissCrowley · 10/07/2022 22:39

Nope, we're in N.Wales and we went on a massive mountain hike yesterday with ours. Today we went to a nearby lake and left the dog at home. She can't be off lead as she's fear aggressive with specific dog breed types. So she would've just been sat on slate all day feeling hot and getting agitated.
Also I think she's enjoyed being in a cool quiet house today to enjoy lovely long naps.

SummerSazz · 11/07/2022 06:19

I'll be heading out shortly. 14 degrees now and 16 by 7am which is lovely. About half the walk will be shady.

girlmom21 · 11/07/2022 06:33

Be careful with these. My daft as a brush, completely non-destructive dog chewed through his and the gel stuff is toxic.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 11/07/2022 10:11

The gel stuff is not toxic. Not if you bought the mat from a reputable source.

Doesn't stop the bits being a choke hazard though!

elm26 · 11/07/2022 10:58

This is the cool collar.

You run it under cold water and it stays cool for hours!

He loves it.

For reference, I got him a size L and he's a springer/cocker who's 19kg. So definitely size up as he'd normally be classed as a medium.

We walked our dog at 6:30. It was lovely and cool and I would feel guilty if she didn't have a walk just so I could stay in bed.

Thank you. I was googling last night and stumbled across that one and ordered it. 🙂
