Dog owners, are you walking them today?

Hello

I've been away for the weekend and just arrived home so couldn't get up at 5am when it's still cool to take my spaniel for a run like I would normally when we have weather like this.

I've seen that it's still going to be 26 degrees at 9pm tonight.

I feel really guilty when he goes without a walk however it just doesn't sound like it's going to cool down to a reasonable temperature tonight.

Are you giving walks a miss today/tonight?

Went to the woods about 10.30. It’s entirely in the shade bar 5 steps of sunshine. I shortened the walk massively, they’ve been indoors since on the tiled floor.

Gingersay · 10/07/2022 16:29

My springer is lying on the couch with me watching Wimbledon if he wanted a walk he would tell me - DH will walk him in the forest at 8/9ish. He had an hour this morning before 9. We usually go a 1 to 2 hour walk on a Sunday afternoon but its too hot!

notsureaboutthatreally · 10/07/2022 16:30

I drove and parked outside pets at home and walked mine round the inside for 20 minutes. Will drive her to the river for a swim later.

RoseDog · 10/07/2022 16:30

We have a big grassy but tree covered communal area in front of our house so both dogs got a lap of that morning and afternoon, just enough opportunity to pee and poo, neither will toilet in the garden.

I hope it cools enough for a bit of a longer walk this evening.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 10/07/2022 16:32

We did a walk in the woods at 8am but won't do another one today. Although the stupid thing keeps heading into the garden and lying in the full sun, despite there being quite a lot of shady corners.

Ncwinc · 10/07/2022 16:32

I do 6am walks when the weather is like this.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 10/07/2022 16:33

No but he's been in and out the garden all day, he's not a big fan of walking in weather anyway

Too cold nope, too rainy nope, too hot nope!

Iheartmysmart · 10/07/2022 16:33

We went out before 6am this morning for a 90 minute walk and it was already getting too warm when we got home. I live in a flat so we have to pop out for quick toilet breaks but there won’t be another walk until about 10pm.

Trulyweird1 · 10/07/2022 16:34

We drove about 1/2 mile to the river and they had a swim. Now lying, damp , - one on me, the other on DH.
Cairngorms National Park, it’s about 26 in the shade according to my garden thermometer. Gorgeous weather, but we just keep them damp to keep them cool

Scarlettpixie · 10/07/2022 16:34

I am not walking mine today. She is currently lying in the shade with a frozen kong.

i am planning to get up early tomorrow to take her before work as it will be the same for a few days by the looks of it.

Titsywoo · 10/07/2022 16:40

Will do a short one at 10pm if it is cooler

MaryLennoxsScowl · 10/07/2022 16:40

I walked mine - it’s 26 degrees but windy here and we walked in the shady woods by a river which he spent most of the walk in as usual. I wouldn’t have gone to an open field/hillside today though, or somewhere without water for him to jump in. He’d like the beach but I thought it’d be completely mobbed with picnics and he’d have to go on the lead.

FlipFlops4Me · 10/07/2022 16:40

We did a walk at 7.30 a.m. but unless it really cools down a lot they won't go out again today. They're Shih-Tzu and one of them has an undercoat like a sheep; I think he'd be ill even if we went for a very gentle stroll.

The doormat has a rubber surround and that surround is too hot to stand on with bare feet! I've got a baby gate up at the front door so that the dogs can see out and get plenty of fresh air but they can't go out and make themselves ill.

actiongirl1978 · 10/07/2022 16:40

Two labs here. A bushy fox Red and a black.

Took the black for a 5 mile run at 7am via the river for a swim and then the red for a 3 mile walk at 8.30 also via the river for a good swim.

They have spent the day alternating between cooking themselves in the sun or lying on the flagstone floor in the kitchen.

That's usually it for them so no evening walk needed but we live 50m from the river so can. Take them down for a swim if I want.

liveforsummer · 10/07/2022 16:44

My jrt is even more of a sun worshipper than me. It's still 27 degrees here and we've just arrived home and she hasn't even panted on her walk. She so much happier, relaxed and well behaved when the weather is good. I imagine bigger, hairer dogs struggle more though

BelleMarionette · 10/07/2022 16:46

Not until the sun goes down and it cools down. It's not safe currently. Though I did see lots of dogs out in the midday heat.

GuyFawkesDay · 10/07/2022 16:46

Spaniel here (black too!) We went out at 7am and had 3 dips in the stream en route but did 1.5hrs and he's been flaked out on his cool mat ever since. Luckily our kitchen is v shady and cool so he's fine but I might go for a sniffy wander round the field (25m from house) about 9pm if it's ok then. Tomorrow is walk at 6am and then even hotter!! Poor doggo

Figgygal · 10/07/2022 16:48

Maybe at bed time
Ive got a black dog who is due a cut so hes struggling enough at home in the shade

mm40 · 10/07/2022 16:49

Definitely not….. I don’t even want to walk myself

iloveeverykindofcat · 10/07/2022 16:49

They're not mine but I walk my mum's with her, she lives in the next street. Semi rural Wales on the sea so we took them to a grass and rock area on the beach this morning. They both swam to keep cool.

PinkPanther50 · 10/07/2022 16:50

My Staffy is a sun worshiper! She loves sunbathing! We are lucky and have a ford close by so we take her there in the evenings and chuck the ball for her so she can run and stay cool but I definitely wouldn’t take her for a walk in this heat

HorsesHoundsandHills · 10/07/2022 16:50

Heading out shortly, as it’s cooled off to 25degrees and there’s a nice cool breeze.
DHound is a Rhodesian Ridgeback - she’s currently sunbathing in the garden, and it’ll be a gentle 30 minute wander out for us, mostly because it’s too hot for me!

fourquenelles · 10/07/2022 16:51

Nope. They have open access to the garden with shade (and an ignored paddling pool). I am a townie and it takes a while for the pavements to cool so no evening walks here either.

Ashamedteeth · 10/07/2022 16:52

Not for my girl. We’ll try and go at 8/9ish if its cooled down to below 20. Tomorrow I will get up early and get her out by 6.30ish as well.

RedHelenB · 10/07/2022 16:53

Took mine out about 10. Came home , Frank some water and then had a good rest. But he loves his walks .
