Dog owners, are you walking them today?

Hello

I've been away for the weekend and just arrived home so couldn't get up at 5am when it's still cool to take my spaniel for a run like I would normally when we have weather like this.

I've seen that it's still going to be 26 degrees at 9pm tonight.

I feel really guilty when he goes without a walk however it just doesn't sound like it's going to cool down to a reasonable temperature tonight.

Are you giving walks a miss today/tonight?

Dh took our dog out this morning at about 11:30. It was only about 22° here, and he took him down to the estuary so he couldgo in the water.

LadyCatStark · 10/07/2022 16:56

We’re in the north west so it’s hot but not as hot as other places. Our black lab doesn’t do well in the heat though. He had half an hour on the field this morning and now I’m just throwing his ball onto his paddling pool for him (whilst soaking my feet 😂). I might take him for another half an hour later if it cools down enough but I’m not bothered if it doesn’t.

Stressybetty · 10/07/2022 16:56

Nope, too hot here, they have the door open and wandering in and out of the garden. Doggy paddling pool outside.

My elderly lab x can't walk far but we take her to the local woods in the car where our entire walk is sheltered sun or rain, the setter would happily never go out but enjoys this walk under sufferance each night! We won't go til 9ish this evening as it is so very warm here in Yorkshire!

NeedAHoliday2021 · 10/07/2022 16:59

Our spaniel had some time in the garden and some in the house. He was walked at 7am briefly and likely will need a walk later tonight as he won’t poop in the garden but a 5 minute walk is fine for that. We go to bed at midnight so he can have a very late one if needed. He did look miserable earlier but was so much happier after a dip.

No walk for mine today , they are sleeping in the shade on their beds, under trees . Too hot 🥵

Iamclearlyamug · 10/07/2022 17:01

I live in a flat so have to take mine out otherwise he can't even pee. I put him in the car with the air conditioning on, drive to a local field which has plenty of shade and let him wander for 10 minutes to do his business and then we go home. Would never let him set foot on a pavement or anything in this heat, but without a garden I have to take him out.

And before anyone comes on moaning 'why did you get a dog without having a garden' he came with my OH when he moved in with me (his landlord sold his place and couldn't find anywhere else that would allow pets) so here we are 🤷‍♀️

CoastalWave · 10/07/2022 17:01

Absolutely not.

I do always wonder though, do dogs in places like Australia every get walked?!

Autumn101 · 10/07/2022 17:03

I’ve just taken mine to the woods, this morning was so hot so just played at home and in the paddling pool. Nice breeze this afternoon and the walk was all in the shade.

He’s a 7.5 month old Springer who lives to run so this week is going to be a challenge!

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 10/07/2022 17:06

Ours went out early, had a good walk in trees and a bit of a paddle in a stream, and will go out for a very short wee walk later. There is a few minutes circular walk we can do in the shade. But that's it.

RainbowBridge21 · 10/07/2022 17:06

I have a large long haired GSD, he's pretty old and gets hot really quickly. Luckily we have a nice big garden he can trot around but he's enjoying his retirement and would rather fall asleep under a tree.

oakleaffy · 10/07/2022 17:13

Whippet, very slim and short haired- we are on a slow walk now in as much shade as poss.

Vikinga · 10/07/2022 17:13

I did but I wet him and carried him until we got to the fields (2 min walk) then gave him a drink and it is about an 8 minute walk in mostly sunny fields and then 30 mins in the woods which is shaded including having a drink at a stream.

Even so he was quite hot so I think tomorrow I'll take him in the morning or in the evening or not at all.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 10/07/2022 17:14

Mine was out at 6am and we won't be out again today.

No dog will die because they don't get walked - please don't risk it. 26 degrees is dangerous and very much heatstroke territory.

NeverHadABetterBitOfButter · 10/07/2022 17:14

We (cocker spaniel and I) went out this morning to the woods for a few hours. It's v shady and cool and fine for him to have a walk.

We have to watch him like a hawk as he has no concept of being too hot so even now we are home, he's not flopped down. He's still trying to charge around like his usual self so we have hidden all the toys and keep giving him cool baths! This week will be a mare!

SirenSays · 10/07/2022 17:16

This is the worst part of weather like this. I walk my reactive rescues early morning and late at night. Now everyone else is doing the same.

Yes - very early in the morning or very late at night.

But it's important to remember that dogs in Australia are used to that kind of heat so they're acclimatised to it than UK dogs are.

Badger1970 · 10/07/2022 17:23

2 spaniels here were walked at 7am, and it was a gorgeous walk mostly in the shade up a farm track and around the edges of the crop fields.

They had a shower when we got home and they won't get another walk today.

Makes me so bloody angry to see idiots out with dogs in this heat.

itsgettingweird · 10/07/2022 17:26

It'll be 26° is the direct sunshine.

If you can find somewhere like a wooded area that's shaded or by the coast/ a lake it'll be cooler.

VickyEadieofThigh · 10/07/2022 17:29

We've been getting her out at 6.30am and then after 8pm these past few days - missing the lunchtime walk out. Works for us as we don't have to go to work any more.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 10/07/2022 17:45

I’m amazed the posters who went out 10am. Where do you live? It was so hot here at 10am, even in the shade, it was far too hot for a dog to be running around fields.

girlmom21 · 10/07/2022 17:46

We did a 6am walk today and will do an 11pm walk too.

sharonelizabeth · 10/07/2022 17:48

No we’ll be giving our walk a miss until the weather cools down.

pilates · 10/07/2022 17:48

No walk today but maybe tonight if it cools down.

Scotland. N Ireland and parts of N England also cooler. Where do you live that it was too hot at 10am to go for a walk?
