Dog owners, are you walking them today?

Hello

I've been away for the weekend and just arrived home so couldn't get up at 5am when it's still cool to take my spaniel for a run like I would normally when we have weather like this.

I've seen that it's still going to be 26 degrees at 9pm tonight.

I feel really guilty when he goes without a walk however it just doesn't sound like it's going to cool down to a reasonable temperature tonight.

Are you giving walks a miss today/tonight?

Our lab hasn’t been out today. Still 29 here. He only does belting around at top speed so no chance of a leisurely cool walk.
I may drive him to the river and tip him in later this evening!

thethoughtfox · 10/07/2022 18:06

V. Short car journey to park about 10am. Paws didn't touch pavement. Paddle in stream and short walk around shaded parts.

AlwaysLatte · 10/07/2022 18:07

We walked ours at 9 last night, today he's not been out but we're lucky to have a stream in the shade in our garden so he's been on and out of that a lot.

Bananaman123 · 10/07/2022 18:11

Nope she has been lying in front of fan all day, better to have a day off

elm26 · 10/07/2022 18:12

I've bought him a little paddling pool being delivered tomorrow, going to freeze his peanut butter kong overnight and I'll get him out at 5am tomorrow. Thanks everyone x

I’m amazed the posters who went out 10am. Where do you live? It was so hot here at 10am, even in the shade, it was far too hot for a dog to be running around fields.

NW England.

It was only 19 degrees or so at that time.

elm26 · 10/07/2022 18:12

Also just a recommendation, I bought him a cool collar/bandana from Amazon and it's the best! He loves it.

I'm taking her at half 9. Poor thing was supposed to be groomed yesterday but the groomer has covid (how selfish!)

NeedAHoliday2021 · 10/07/2022 18:21

@SirChenjins I’m south west England about 45 minutes to the nearest coast. It was 26 degrees at 10am here. Currently 28 degrees. Dd1 is currently eating frozen mango because I’m refusing to cook yet and they’ve had ice creams. (She’s 14 so will survive my refusal to cook until later).

SummerSazz · 10/07/2022 18:22

We went out for an hour at8am. Shady woods and a bit out in the sun. Didn't take the ball as she's a muppet and would chase it till she dropped. Water stop half way round and she was fine. Rest of the day spent in cool shady spots in and out of the house

BackToTheTop · 10/07/2022 18:22

My dh took our 2 out for a walk at 5am but said even then it was ho5z I'd not dream of taking them out after 8am

Bigblackandreddog · 10/07/2022 18:22

I won’t walk mine until the heat subsides. They are very hairy and struggle.

Personally I think all dogs should be okay to miss the odd walk without going crazy.

BiteyShark · 10/07/2022 18:23

Looks like a 6:30 am walk tomorrow as well.

ChuckBerrysBoots · 10/07/2022 18:24

Nope. Ours flakes out at temps above 20, even a mooch around the garden today has left her panting. She has a cooling bandana on but she absolutely HATES water so paddling pool is being ignored. Will walk her before 8 tomorrow instead.

MinglingFlamingo · 10/07/2022 18:25

We had a very short walk down to a beach . Where she could have a paddle and it was cooler

SpiderinaWingMirror · 10/07/2022 18:26

We took ours for a woodland walk this morning. Left him at home whilst we jumped on the train down to Hastings to grab a few things.
The number of fuckwits with dogs on hot pavements, including breeds like French bulldogs etc had to be seen to be believed.

I live in a flat so have to take mine out otherwise he can't even pee. I put him in the car with the air conditioning on, drive to a local field which has plenty of shade and let him wander for 10 minutes to do his business and then we go home. Would never let him set foot on a pavement or anything in this heat, but without a garden I have to take him out.

And before anyone comes on moaning 'why did you get a dog without having a garden' he came with my OH when he moved in with me (his landlord sold his place and couldn't find anywhere else that would allow pets) so here we are 🤷‍♀️

What do people think about dogs all over the world, particularly in european cities where almost no one lives in houses (unless uber rich), so all the flat dwellers come out in the evening when its still in the late 30s temperature wise to walk the dog.

I dont like the heat but not walking a dog in 26 degrees is over the top, particularly if they wont get a walk all day.

Spanielsarepainless · 10/07/2022 18:26

Younger dog came out for an hour hurtling around about 7.00. Older dog went for an hour's walk between 10 and 11, by which time the sea breeze had started and it was very pleasant indeed.

RaleighDurham · 10/07/2022 18:28

We were out with ours at 9.30 this morning, in shady woods with a river for him to splash in.
He's been slumped under a bush in the garden since but we will take him out for a quick walk later on after dinner.

lurchermummy · 10/07/2022 18:31

Nope, my two are currently out in the shady garden foraging grated mozzarella off the lawn

GrouchyKiwi · 10/07/2022 18:35

No walk for ours today, even thought we're in Scotland. She's a Newfoundland, and it won't get below 21 till too late tonight so she'll just miss out. Will try to get her out early morning instead.

She's a weirdo who doesn't like the pool so this weather is quite hard on her.

Mum2jenny · 10/07/2022 18:39

Walked mine at 8am this morning and will probably walk her early tomorrow too, possibly around 6am.

Notanotherwindow · 10/07/2022 18:53

I took mine as they won't poo in the garden. Will both hold it all day if they have to. So I took them for a half hour walk at around 11 down to the stream.

They played in the water for a bit, jumping in and out like nutters and swimming in the deeper parts and they've been lying out in the garden ever since. Occasionally they get up to come in the kitchen and make the feed me eyes for some chicken but otherwise they're just chilling. I'll take them out again before bed when the suns gone in.

Sexnotgender · 10/07/2022 18:54

Took mine out first thing, it was about 16 degrees. Far too hot now!

Holidaydreamingagain · 10/07/2022 18:55

Not today but I’ll take him into the woods first thing tomorrow morning for a bit
