To send back that Jubilee book?

YahBooFucks · 09/07/2022 20:51

My DS came back with the Jubilee book this week. I didn't know anything about it (the Jubilee wasn't something that I was remotely bothered by) but apparently every family with a primary aged child is getting one. I'm massively annoyed by this book... It strikes me as an enormous waste of money, especially at a time when so many people/organisations/schools etc are struggling. I also hate having patriotism shoved down my (and my kids') throat. But it's mainly the money...

WIBU to send the book back (haven't figured out to whom yet. I'm guessing not the queen) with a note saying 'no, thank you'?

Oh God. Bore off. What a pathetic thing to get worked up about.

@Whereswallywonka no sustainable but there are lots of ways that money could have a more positive impact on childrens lives,
injected into school breakfast clubs would be one way. Or towards art resources, or sports equipment, stationary, some nice coffee/biscuits for teachers who have been on their knees the last couple of years... I can list a million better things to spend this money on and I don't even work in a school!

Reading the book may encourage children to read more.

The government has already put money into breakfast clubs www.gov.uk/guidance/breakfast-clubs-programme-2021-2023

they’ve also given money to struggling families impacted by the cost of living and there’s more support on the way costoflivingsupport.campaign.gov.uk

Yes, because a monarchist would call the book tedious?

You ok hun? Maybe you should go back to primary and learn to read. I hear they have some lovely new books.

It's Dr Domus, actually - a title that I have gained through years of study, not just by privilege of birth like the aristos.😀

plugee · 09/07/2022 23:12

If you have such an issue living in a country with a monarchy then feel free to go live somewhere else.

what rubbish!

plugee · 09/07/2022 23:13

Actually there seem to be a fair few people, at least on here, who care very much indeed, enough to insult the OP and get really quite cross about her posting books to the queen.

exactly!

This thread is like those threads where people start complaining about their kids doing Assembly or RE!
Unless you have just arrived in the Country you too will have received a gift for a Jubilee, taken part in. Christmas play, made Easter hats, if you have been through all that 'indoctrination' yourself & managed to come through the system with an ounce of independent thought why are you so frightened that your kids won't!

I just find it bafflingly!

I think you give them too much credit. They live in just as much of an echo chamber as hard core royalists, except maybe with a lower capacity for critical thinking... and a less fancy tea pot.

plugee · 09/07/2022 23:16

Stop being so attention seeking.

This is batshit

YahBooFucks · 09/07/2022 23:18

@EssexSerpent the fact that the government/councils waste a shit ton of money elsewhere doesn't mean I can't be angry about this specific waste. I don't do any volunteering at the moment but this isn't really the point.

There won’t be a monarchy in 25 years OP - most of the U.K. is already fed up of their grubby lack of ethics and grabby ways. Stick the book in an attic for a few decades then sell.

plugee · 09/07/2022 23:20

We didn’t get one in London.

I'm in London & just got them

You say it like it isn't a common as muck title that is pretty easy to get 🤣 I'm a Dr x2 and currently chairing an entire department on my way to being a card carrying reader and then hopefully Professor.

Do you want a prize??

Ariela · 09/07/2022 23:21

Chances are the cost of said book is sponsored by or paid for by someone.
However given it's a one-off event that's quite momentous, I'd definitely keep them for your kids.
We went to a street party and a lady there in her late 90s had brought lots of Royal souvenirs from previous Royals too - a bit of a family collection. It was so very interesting to be allowed to handle various items and read the newspaper cuttings etc. It was also very nice for the lady, who absolutely loved holding fort to a barrage of questions from the street's kids who had hundreds of questions about how her life was as a child, and the impact of war on the family (they moved out from London as next door's house was bombed, and to learn about the Queen's coronation - they were invited by a friend to watch TV for the first time, TV bought new for the purpose..

Viviennemary · 09/07/2022 23:22

I think if you want to send the book back as a protest then you should. Why should it be taken for granted we are all in fzvour of sn unelected family of billionaires lording it over us.

Omg you are awesome. Thank you so so much for talking to me. You have made my evening.

They are giving them to every state primary child, why on earth do you think they'll be worth selling in a few years? The mugs they gave away for the silver jubilee aren't exactly high prized collectors pieces and they, at least, had some utility.

YahBooFucks · 09/07/2022 23:26

@GyozaGuiting but this is precisely why I'm getting a bit worked up (and I mean 'a bit'... I've really done nothing more than state how annoyed I am by it on a mumsnet thread)... There are awful things going on in the world, and real suffering and difficulties in this country. 12 million quid could have made much more of a difference elsewhere.

YahBooFucks · 09/07/2022 23:29

@leotardrock I think this thread is proof that indoctrination does not result in independent thought.

I'm not frightened that my kids won't have independent thought. I don't think that's going to be an issue for them 😁.

OP posts:
Caramac555 · 09/07/2022 23:30

Yeah I wasn't impressed either. They could have donated money to libraries in schools and the resulting books could have had book plates with "donated on occasion of the jubilee etc"

No, not her. Because, as stated by a PP, she definitely didn't pay for it. Any suggestions?

Jijithecat · 09/07/2022 23:34

There are benefits in reading books that you don't like, it leads to wider conversation. It sounds like you've had that conversation with your children about the book, so there you go not wasted afterall.
Meanwhile there are plenty of children who have enjoyed the book, so I don't see the issue.

As for all the posters arguing that the money could be better spent on x,y,z for children you're likely the people that can't be arsed to help out in school, volunteer at events etc. but are more than happy to moan about the state that schools are in.

Dita73 · 09/07/2022 23:36

Sending the book back?! Gosh I’m sure the establishment will be shocked to its very core! You may want to think twice before doing something so controversial
