To send back that Jubilee book?

YahBooFucks · 09/07/2022 20:51

My DS came back with the Jubilee book this week. I didn't know anything about it (the Jubilee wasn't something that I was remotely bothered by) but apparently every family with a primary aged child is getting one. I'm massively annoyed by this book... It strikes me as an enormous waste of money, especially at a time when so many people/organisations/schools etc are struggling. I also hate having patriotism shoved down my (and my kids') throat. But it's mainly the money...

WIBU to send the book back (haven't figured out to whom yet. I'm guessing not the queen) with a note saying 'no, thank you'?

Why not worry about corporate fraud? Benefits cheats? Tax evasion? It's a kids book...

I never understand this pov, most people are quite capable about worrying about more that one thing.
Plus why are you worrying about the OPs post when you could be focusing on corporate fraud, tax evasion etc?

Bungg1e · 10/07/2022 07:26

I’ve seen the book. Our KS2 kids were thrilled with it. The facts are really interesting. Kids are interested in all sorts of historical events after they have happened.

We got a book and it's a lovely book and will be well treasured. My child signed his name and dated it too on the first page.

What's a shame to be so ungrateful!

At a time when some primary school children are not getting enough to eat, I think the OP is making a good point. Massive spend on a nice to have but what about real issues facing so many families? It's disconnected from reality.

waveyourpompoms · 10/07/2022 07:35

Oh honey. Sending the book back isn’t going to make any type of point except that you’re petty, miserable and resentful.

Your “tiny protest” does nothing but make you annoyed. It doesn’t affect anyone else because nobody else gives a shit whether or not you want the book.

Sounds like you’re already brainwashing your DC but all that’s going to do is make them grow up to be as miserable as you.

plugee · 10/07/2022 07:49

It doesn’t affect anyone else because nobody else gives a shit whether or not you want the book.

Judging by your extreme reaction you certainly seem bothered.

ILoveYoga · 10/07/2022 07:56

Is the ping of the book for you as patent or for your child commemorating an important historical event? Is it your book to get rid of?

if you’re all donating to the charity shops, please come back and let those of us who havent seen the book and perhaps would like the chance to have one, know where we could go buy one and support a charity too.

orangeisthenewpuce · 10/07/2022 08:12

Return it if you want. No one will care.

So what are you doing about making sure that primary school children have enough to eat? Or are you just using it as a cheap way to make a point?
There are so many food redistribution schemes out there now it's easy to get involved. If there isn't one in your area set one up.

Rockbird · 10/07/2022 09:11

Oh do get a grip. That money is a drop in the ocean. And it's not yours, it's your child's. I got a silver coin and a mug for the 1977 jubilee. Didn't give a toss as a kid but I've still got them now.

Give it back to the school if you're so bothered, they'll be happy to give it to one of the kids that didn't get one because their sibling did. We could only give one per family. But they'll think you're a twat.

YahBooFucks · 10/07/2022 09:33

So lovely to be called a twat again! Thank you, @Rockbird

@waveyourpompoms Honey, I'm really not miserable. And I certainly don't brainwash my kids. They know what I think about things because I'm happy to talk to them about stuff in an age-appropriate and balanced way; and they then form their own opinions based on their own thoughts. They disagree with me about certain things... They are very (very!) independent of mind. I find it so odd that people think that I 'brainwash' my kids with my anti-monarchy stance, yet people who happily read this blatant propaganda with their children, and deck their houses in bunting to celebrate the reign of the Queen are somehow immune from the accusation.

OP posts:
rodham · 10/07/2022 10:01

Well quite. If people stopped and thought about the monarchy REALLY hard then surely they'd come to the conclusion that it's wrong. And therefore that giving children books celebrating it is wrong. I think it's clear who's been brainwashed and it's not your DCs

DoncasterHombre · 10/07/2022 10:02

YesGotIt · 10/07/2022 00:39

Yabu. My kids enjoyed it. Of all the wastes of taxpayers money, a kids book is lowest on my list.

Why not worry about corporate fraud? Benefits cheats? Tax evasion? It's a kids book...

😂The Irony of mentioning those things in defence of the royal family is staggering!

kimfox · 10/07/2022 10:28

Sell it on eBay & donate the money to your local food bank. Would do more good than the postage wasted in sending it back!

How on earth is a little kids book explaining the history of the Queen's reign (like any other educational history book explains the history of that subject) 'propaganda?!?!'

That's like saying a book about the history of air travel is 'propaganda' because you hate flying..... Hmm

With respect, grow up OP. It's a history book - a free one. For kids to learn when QE11 was coronated, what she's done since. End of book. Move on with life.

Surely even people who are anti-monarch need to at least know the facts to justify their stance?

plugee · 10/07/2022 10:40

Of course it's propaganda! I actually don't mind the book but some of the posts are here are eye opening in terms of intelligence.

plugee · 10/07/2022 10:43

what would this be called if not propaganda? 🤣🤣

zingally · 10/07/2022 11:19

Oh, get over it. Don't send it back to the school, they'll just think you're weird AF.

Give it to a charity shop, or throw it in the bin if you can that much.

Or ask your child (who the book actually belongs to) what they'd like to do.

sashagabadon · 10/07/2022 11:24

I no longer have kids at primary school and I’d love the book. Can you send to me?

sweatervest · 10/07/2022 11:27

I thought it was quite nice tbh and there's statistics somewhere that say that some homes don't have ANY books.

I encouraged the class I was in at the time to write their name in the front of the book and we had a good chat about the queen and how many great grandchildren she's got and it was all a nice thing.

blahblahblahspoons · 10/07/2022 11:34

I really think it would've been better to get any of many, many more child friendly books already in existence than this waste of space. Julia Donaldson for the little ones Onjali Rauf for the older ones - so many great British authors.

Not child friendly at all, not going to benefit them in terms of reading or their imaginations - dull as dull can be.

It's the juxtaposition that is hard to take - kids and families and schools constantly, constantly being told now 'there's no money' e.g. CAMHS 3 year waiting list, no opening windows in a pandemic and then every child gets a brand new book. No money you say? Yeah, except for things that don't benefit the kids and are vanity projects for adults.

My DD loves books and was excited to read it. I read the first page and she wandered off and hasn't asked again.

SoupDragon · 10/07/2022 11:45

are any of those about the Queen and theJubilee? You know, the subject the book is meant to be celebrating and the reason it was given?

it was for the platinum jubilee, not Workd Book Day.

DockOTheBay · 10/07/2022 12:17

It definitely is propaganda.
A few inspirational quotes from the book:
"The UK has excelled in literature and drama"
"73 years, what a couple they made... Such a long, happy partnership they made"
"What an incredible woman!" ... "You can say that again. We can all learn a thing or two from our Queen"
"People must get so excited when the Queen visits, I know I would!"

It's cheesy, poorly written and very overtly positive about how great the royal family are. It's definitely "information of a biased nature designed to promote a particular point of view" I e. The definition of propaganda.

KettrickenSmiled · 09/07/2022 22:51

There's nothing "wrong" with feeling pissed off that £12 million of taxpayers' money has been spaffed on a grotesque act of sycophancy @Fullofhotcrossbuns. By the same administration that refused to feed hungry children & needed a footballer to take them to task about it.

Feeding “hungry” kids is a different topic all together

the tax payer shouldn’t have to pay extra for lay about’s & benefit scroungers kids to be fed.

Contraception, Community Service & life coaching would be more beneficial to this types

Fullofhotcrossbuns · 10/07/2022 12:47

Wait until a few of you find out about the Jubilee medals awarded to all who have done 5 years + of public service or military…….

😡

CulturePigeon · 10/07/2022 13:37

OP - there's a lot to 'unpack' (horrible jargon, sorry) in your post, but 2 things stand out to me, and they're probably not the ones you want to talk about.

You dispprove of patriotism? Patriotism is the love of your homeland -something most people feel. Don't confuse it with aggressive nationalism, even if that's what so many half-baked people tend to do. I love this country for it's literature, music, art, countryside and - yes - some really great historical figures who have helped humanity. Would you feel so cross with say, Jamaicans or people from the Indian sub-continent talking lovingly of their homelands? One of the problems we have currently is people being taught to despise their country, quite unfairly. Of course bad things happened - but that's common to most countries if you look closely. If we don't care about our country, frankly there's no hope for any of us and many people actually claim to hate it! I beg you to introduce your children to some of the positive things about their country.

Also - I'm no rabid royalist, but....it strains my credulity to believe that your 9 year-old has really formulated her own strong anti-royalist views at that age. Whatever your views, I think it's just plain mean to take away what could have been her innocent enjoyment of a fun historical event at that early age. Shoot me down in flames, but most kids of that age just love the spectacle and over-the-topness of these things. There's time to question them later....
