Would you have bought the fish?

My DH has just gone to the supermarket. There was a young lad reducing stock, had been told to reduce a whack of fish (mainly salmon). Reckon he's made a mistake - instead of reducing it BY 10%, he reduced it TO 10%. About twelve packs of fresh fish fillets, reduced in value from about £80 to £8.

Another employee had clocked it and came over to say 'You're going to get a row for that'. So there was a very limited number of these really, really cheap packets of fish.

He bought the lot. Was this unreasonable, knowing it was a fuck up? And was it unreasonable, as in greedy, to take them all?

Unlikely a mistake was made

Fish goes off very quickly so would need to be sold off super cheap as it would be unsellable by the morning

The comment was more likely made as other staff would have wanted it at that price

What does he need 12 packs of salmon for?!

Buying 2-3 would have been fine

To eat? Perhaps the DH has a freezer?

Navigatingnewwaters · 09/07/2022 20:00

Salmon is gross so YABU ☺️

I would have bought them all too and stocked the freezer 🤷🏻‍♀️

Me too - well, I would if I had a large enough freezer

If my husband proudly returned from the hunt with a few smelly kilos of fish obtained by dodging a teenage shop worker and whizzing past pensioners with hopeful expressions and empty baskets, that would really really give me the ick.

What a small man he is.

Nice made up narrative 🤭

DesignerRecliner · 09/07/2022 20:03

I'd have bought them all if no one else was at the yellow sticker section. Why not?

mrsm43s · 09/07/2022 20:04

I'd have bought as much as I had room in the freezer for. Fairly normal for reductions down to 10% at my local supermarket, so wouldn't have batted an eyelid about that, and there's no guarantee that the next person to come across the shelf would be any more needy/worthy than me! Very rare for me to have enough freezer space for 12 though, so mst likely I wouldn't have taken them all. I hate food waste!

So he overheard that the employee was going to get into trouble and then decided to buy the lot? What a lovely man.

If it was the wrong price why did they leave it for sale?

Prinnny · 09/07/2022 20:11

It might not have been a mistake, 10% off the price in the evening for fish that needs eating the same day isn’t that much of a bargain.

We’re not skint but if there was something we eat in the oopsie section I’d buy it. We eat a lot of salmon so I’d probably have got two or three packs in this situation.

You make yourself sound silly here. You remind me of the man who came to dinner with my parents, my mum offered him the broccoli and he said 'No thanks, it's horrible, isn't it!'

pictish · 09/07/2022 20:20

Greedy and exploitative to take the lot, yep. I mean it’s only fish but it’s not an attractive way to think is it?

BruceWaynettaSlob · 09/07/2022 20:20

MarvelMrs · 09/07/2022 18:29

I would have put them all in my basket and taken them back to the young man and asked him to mark them to the correct discount so he didn’t get in trouble.

I believe you Wink

OldFan · 09/07/2022 20:24

A bargain's a bargain. All's fair in the current year where we all need to get stuff as cheaply as we can.

KatherineJaneway · 09/07/2022 20:25

Blossomandbee · 09/07/2022 16:46

Very greedy yes, I can't stand the grabby people who clear the shelves of anything cheap. And knowing a shop assistant was going to get in trouble for it too.

Have to agree, very greedy and getting someone into trouble to boot. Very unattractive.

Zone2NorthLondon · 09/07/2022 20:34

No one knows if they worker got in trouble or what actions the store took. Multiple exaggerated imagination of a Scrooge like shop manager sacking the worker, docking pay, remonstrating with the worker. Idle speculation about an unknown outcome to suit posters pov and bolster their own posts. Frankly we don't know what may or may not have happened

The. DH was fortunate enough to be able to hoover up a bargain, Lucky. Right time, right place

i read all the martyred protestations that oh gosh, no it’s selfish, abhorrent, mean and evil to avail oneself of a bargain. in fact, according to the mn martyrs the dh should have summoned help, demanded to see the manager and insisted on paying full price in case the sales assistant got into any trouble

TheVolturi · 09/07/2022 20:35

Didn't we have this same post but about whole cooked chickens, not long ago?

OldFan · 09/07/2022 20:36

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g I don't think the poster was 100% serious in saying 'it's gross so YABU.' Smile I mean, she probably feels salmon is gross but it was also not a serious comment.

Gingermoth · 09/07/2022 20:41

I want to read the chicken thread!

IvorCutler · 09/07/2022 20:44

is this the same dh who bought all the chickens? (Haven’t read through)

Beautiful3 · 09/07/2022 20:44

Very greedy. Taking half would have been enough. Nice to leave some for other people.

IvorCutler · 09/07/2022 20:45

I see I’m not the first one to ask!

LookAtThatCritter · 09/07/2022 20:48

I'd have bought the whole lot as well unless the shop assistant was making obvious attempts to change the price or take it off the shelves. It can be easily frozen, and there's no guarantee that someone else would have come along and bought it in time.

Northernsouloldies · 09/07/2022 20:57

Wanky behaviour, buy what you need, nobody needs 12packs of anything. I've been in similar position, saw steaks down to 1.50 down from 4.00.could have taken the lot but didn't cos I'm not an inconsiderate greedy bastard.

Meraas · 09/07/2022 21:00

If the fish was best before today then they probably did mean to reduce it by 90%.
