Would you have bought the fish?

My DH has just gone to the supermarket. There was a young lad reducing stock, had been told to reduce a whack of fish (mainly salmon). Reckon he's made a mistake - instead of reducing it BY 10%, he reduced it TO 10%. About twelve packs of fresh fish fillets, reduced in value from about £80 to £8.

Another employee had clocked it and came over to say 'You're going to get a row for that'. So there was a very limited number of these really, really cheap packets of fish.

He bought the lot. Was this unreasonable, knowing it was a fuck up? And was it unreasonable, as in greedy, to take them all?

The pricing may not have been a mistake. It's quite common in Morrisons and Co-op for final reductions of the day to be marked down to a tiny fraction of the original price, 10% or even just a blanket 9p for every item is not unknown.

10% off the original price on the other hand would not attract many buyers. I'd definitely buy a £5 fillet of fish marked down to 50p and used it that day or freeze it. If the price reduction was only to £4.50 though, I wouldn't bother. 0r the sake of 50p, I would choose fresher fish with a longer date code.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 09/07/2022 19:29

Very greedy and grabby.

diddl · 09/07/2022 19:31

How much fish in a pack Op?

If I could fit them in the freezer I might have taken more than one or two!

Love salmon, can rarely afford it!

AquaVite · 09/07/2022 19:32

I would have snapped up a couple of packs and left the rest for someone else. I hate seeing people do what your DH did. It just seems so selfish.

ColadhSamh · 09/07/2022 19:34

FuckingHateRats · 09/07/2022 16:51

Yeah I wouldn't have taken so much if it was me - enough for two meals and then I'd have left some for others.

He came home so happy with himself though!

With no thought for the poor staff member who made an honest mistake and will undoubtedly get told off if not sacked.

RaininSummer · 09/07/2022 19:34

Surely a 10 per cent reduction which you think it was supposed to be, wouldn't induce anybody to buy the fish unless already planning to.

RollOnWinter · 09/07/2022 19:35

Greedy and selfish

RanchoRelaxo · 09/07/2022 19:36

Yeah I would have bought them all too 🤷🏼‍♀️

OnaBegonia · 09/07/2022 19:37

Live frugally? but spent £96 on fish?ok

OnaBegonia · 09/07/2022 19:38

Oops my maths is out, I thought each pack was £8

PlopPlop · 09/07/2022 19:38

Meh my local Tesco express reduced two boxes of bacon to ten pence a back, I asked if any employees wanted them (it’s on my doorstep so friendly with them) a few said yeah so I bought the lot bar what the employees said they wanted.

havent bought bacon for months

whynotwhatknot · 09/07/2022 19:40

so youre trying to live more frugally but he gave some to the dog

Electriq · 09/07/2022 19:40

Is this chicken guy too?

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 09/07/2022 19:40

I would have had a couple and left the rest.

I've been in the situation where every penny counted and I've seen someone snapping up all of something which I desperately needed myself. So no I'm not a goody two shoes, just someone who understands that I'm not the only one who needs reduced food and there will likely be someone worse off who may need that.

Zone2NorthLondon · 09/07/2022 19:40

This has turned into competitive martyrdom of how one selflessly would forgo a bargain
Decline to buy reduced price food just in case someone more deserving neds it..yea right
would have left some, just in case someone deserving is passing and they need a bargain
Where I am there are shoppers who’ll follow the staff with the yelllow price sticker gun and hoover And hoover up all the bargains . They’re very much you snooze you lose

junglejane66 · 09/07/2022 19:44

Yes, very shellfish

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 09/07/2022 19:45

I would have done the same OP. Not specifically fish because we don't eat it but if it was, let's say sausages or steak then yes I would have bought as much as I could.

Proudboomer · 09/07/2022 19:47

If something is yellow stickered and it is something I eat then yes I would buy the lot. Yellow sticker time around my way is always like feeding time at the zoo with a hovering crowd and arms reaching in.
And even if the lad had priced them wrong management would never know as there would be none left on the shelf to price check

Sarbears28 · 09/07/2022 19:47

I love salmon!! If I was lucky enough to be in your DH's shoes I would have done exactly the same. Right place right time.

CarolwithaC · 09/07/2022 19:53

I understand making a mistake. I make mistakes all the time, but whacking the poor fella with the fish was really nasty. He could have just purchased the fish and left.
I hope your husband gets the runs from bad fish.

IrisVersicolor · 09/07/2022 19:53

Electriq · 09/07/2022 19:40

Is this chicken guy too?

I was wondering the same. Roll on beef guy.

Dixiechickonhols · 09/07/2022 19:55

I'd check if someone else stood there but if not and I could freeze it i'd buy it. I wouldn't assume pricing error there are all sorts of random reductions - co op goes to pennies at night. If you leave it it will often just be thrown away - I see the co op bag and throw it all if I get there too late.
I was in Sainsburys and they had loads of Extra special berries reduces to 19p that were in date until day after. I bought as many as we could use but there were lots. Not sure if error or just trying to move them before they spoiled.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 09/07/2022 19:56

I wouldn't have bought the lot because only one of us would eat it . I did buy a couple of packets that were reduced the other day .

And ds shared it with the cat

pbj · 09/07/2022 19:57

Yep greedy af and utterly selfish. If this is actually true Hmm

airrrrAIRRRRiELLLL · 09/07/2022 19:57

So he overheard that the employee was going to get into trouble and then decided to buy the lot? What a lovely man.
