Would you have bought the fish?

My DH has just gone to the supermarket. There was a young lad reducing stock, had been told to reduce a whack of fish (mainly salmon). Reckon he's made a mistake - instead of reducing it BY 10%, he reduced it TO 10%. About twelve packs of fresh fish fillets, reduced in value from about £80 to £8.

Another employee had clocked it and came over to say 'You're going to get a row for that'. So there was a very limited number of these really, really cheap packets of fish.

He bought the lot. Was this unreasonable, knowing it was a fuck up? And was it unreasonable, as in greedy, to take them all?

You'll be bored of salmon within a week and never want to eat it again.

Lovemusic33 · 09/07/2022 18:04

I can’t see that they would have reduced something by 10%, usually it’s usually arising 50% for items close to use by?

I don’t think he was greedy, he was just first there so grabbed them. Enjoy eating fish for the next couple of weeks 😃.

I wouldn't have taken all of it. I think I'm hardwired to never take the last of anything.

Me neither. In fact my granny always used to leave enough food in the pot that if anyone popped in they could have it on a piece of bread.

FuckingHateRats · 09/07/2022 17:34

Definitely not.

Although I'd be lying if I said he hadn't grilled one of the fillets this afternoon and let the dog have a decent taste 😬

Yikes

Ps o don't know half as many goody two shoes in real life as there are on mumsnet!

I’d have bought the lot, family meal tonight, then cold salmon sandwiches for tomorrows tea and Mondays lunch.

It doesn’t say much about the people you know.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 09/07/2022 18:08

I would have no problem buying them all BUT I could not let a young lad get into trouble if I had overheard that conversation, because that is a dick move.

AliceS1994 · 09/07/2022 18:10

Depends if you are skint you need the fish. I wouldn't judge some struggling to do their weekly shop for buying up the bargains if they get lucky, but would for a very well off person buying them for the novelty of the bargain.

LidlCinnamonBun · 09/07/2022 18:10

Your husband helped the young lad by getting rid of the evidence.

He fed some to the dog so clearly not on the breadline

I wouldn't have taken the lot, but I would have taken advantage of the low price even it were a mistake, and taken a couple of packs. Maybe one for tonight and one for the freezer. I would have left some for him to rectify or sell to others.

There was a price list at the school fair last weekend for drinks. The low alcohol beers were meant to be £3.50-£4.50 but the cans of sparkling juice were £1. I asked for a beer, but the guy got the price wrong and charged me £1. I'm not going to correct him, even though I know he's wrong.

Granted, it's only a few quid compared to being reduced to 10% on fish!

So you diddled the PTA, which raises funds for the school? That seems much, much worse to me than getting a real bargain from Tesco or some other mammoth company. Given how much food is wasted in the UK every day, I'm pleased to think this salmon didn't die in vain.

I really don't care. I bought lots of stuff at the fair and donated loads. So what if I left £2.50 off one drink when I was told the wrong price. I don't feel at all guilty, no.

Jo586 · 09/07/2022 18:14

That was a really cheap thing to do, some people are just like that.

Agree this is so much worse than the OP. Not much lower than stealing from your own kids’ school.

Georgyporky · 09/07/2022 18:17

I'd have done the same; times are hard & supermarkets are still making large profits.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 09/07/2022 18:17

What a goady thread.

You know exactly what you're doing OP. This seems to be the newest goady fucker thing by the sounds of it. Celebrating buying ALL the cheap food and then rushing on to Mumsnet to boast about it. Why would you do that?

LidlCinnamonBun · 09/07/2022 18:10

That’s brilliant. LOL. Anytime my supermarket has special offers I stock up. That’s the point of them. It’s not about fairness, if it were they can put up a sign one per customer. Which was very common during Lockdown, but still happens where I shop for really good bargains. It’s the customers right to buy how much or how little he wants. Food is marked down as the shop needs rid of it otherwise it will go off which is wasteful. Though I draw the line at feeding it to the dog, the cat on the other hand, well he’s a prince amongst cats.

brown543 · 09/07/2022 18:19

It's really not the end of the world. While I don't clear the yellow sticker shelves, equally I wouldn't judge others (who I've seen doing it enough times).

Some of the posts are rather over the top for a bit of cheap salmon.

TheTerfTavern · 09/07/2022 18:19

You and your husband sound like total tramps

ans you’re not struggling that much if you let your dog have some 🙄

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 09/07/2022 18:20

Lying with added sprinkles as it had possibly cost a youngster his job. Or depending on the company his wages if he has to correct the mistake.

Fucking awful behaviour, if my dh came home proud that he had fucked over an employee I'd wonder where I went wrong.

WhackingPhoenix · 09/07/2022 18:26

The replies on here are hilarious 😂 OP’s husband has somehow gone from being a savvy shopper who quietly took advantage of reduced salmon to a villain who steals food from the mouths of pensioners 🥴

Three Tesco employees missed the opportunity to correct the error, if there even was one, (the original employee, the one who noticed what was happening and the checkout assistant) and had it been decided that there was a mistake then nobody else would have been able to buy the salmon at that price.

And so what if the dog had some? I hope he enjoyed every mouthful 😌

stuntbubbles · 09/07/2022 18:26

“We’re trying to live more frugally, by feeding our dog fresh salmon and getting minimum wage employees sacked.”

I assume at this point you’re trolling us because no one can possibly be this thick

Have a read of some of the threads of true poverty to see who this could have helped and you’re proud that you gave it to the dog. FFS. If this is even real.

Genuinely wasn't trying to be goady (and didn't know about previous posts either). He came home all chuffed at his bargain, I was a bit :/ at the situation, came on to get everyone's take on it.

Making a lot of women I don't know angry online isn't really my idea of a fun time 😂

I would have put them all in my basket and taken them back to the young man and asked him to mark them to the correct discount so he didn’t get in trouble.
