Would you have bought the fish?

My DH has just gone to the supermarket. There was a young lad reducing stock, had been told to reduce a whack of fish (mainly salmon). Reckon he's made a mistake - instead of reducing it BY 10%, he reduced it TO 10%. About twelve packs of fresh fish fillets, reduced in value from about £80 to £8.

Another employee had clocked it and came over to say 'You're going to get a row for that'. So there was a very limited number of these really, really cheap packets of fish.

He bought the lot. Was this unreasonable, knowing it was a fuck up? And was it unreasonable, as in greedy, to take them all?

Greedy.

EveningOverRooftops · 09/07/2022 17:42

in two minds about this.

first come first served absolutely. When I was broke I’d snag up seriously reduced food with my tiny bit of wiggle room budget and fill up my freezer.

now I have more cash/resources? I’d take a couple and leave the rest.

Well, we're trying to live more frugally with rising costs so it's already in the freezer and he's googling recipes he can make to feed us for weeks (two adults, three teenage kids here)

We’re all trying to live more frugally at the moment. And the employee is going to get into trouble for it too. Your DH sounds selfish to me.

Beelezebub · 09/07/2022 17:43

I’d have done it if there was no one else there wanting any. Someone has to buy them 🤷🏻‍♀️

ilovesooty · 09/07/2022 17:48

I hope the lad who made the error isn't disciplined. Doesn't sound as though your husband gave that a second thought though.

Namechange7777 · 09/07/2022 17:48

it was reduced from £80 to £8 and he bought 12 - So he spent £96 on Salmon in an attempt to live more frugally?? 😂😂
Ok, I have so many questions. How big is your family? You are only supposed to keep fresh fish in freezer for max 3 months, even if you ignore health and safety, seriously how much salmon could 1 family eat. How does it even fit in your freezer??

SpartacusNotEsther · 09/07/2022 17:48

I wouldn't have bought it, but I only buy fish when it's fresh. Fish on it's use by date isn't.

SpartacusNotEsther · 09/07/2022 17:49

No, he spent £8.

Dylanesque · 09/07/2022 17:51

If the lot will get eaten, then good for him. If the shop boy cant figure what 10% is, or cant be arsed to check his work, then may he shouldn't be in the job.

Yea so is everybody else.

Ah, i reread it. £8 for 12 packs, not 8 per pack 😂😂😂
….tbh, that’s still way too much salmon for anyone who isn’t a bear.

Pkwq · 09/07/2022 17:52

I wouldn't have bought it as my kids won't eat anything that comes out of the freeze and I don't eat fish... but

I've no problem with anyone who buys loads of anything at a reduced price.

Popsicle33 · 09/07/2022 17:54

Some posters are pretending to be holier than thou! I would have took it and stocked up the freezer! The shop guy won't have to pay ffs!

drpet49 · 09/07/2022 17:55

I would have bought them all too and stocked the freezer 🤷🏻‍♀️

^Me too. Some of the replies on here are stupid.

If my husband proudly returned from the hunt with a few smelly kilos of fish obtained by dodging a teenage shop worker and whizzing past pensioners with hopeful expressions and empty baskets, that would really really give me the ick. What a small man he is

😂 That's quite an imagination you have.

I've stocked up on plenty of good offers in my time. I once bought twelve punnets of strawberries from our local Coop that were priced down to 50p each and perfectly fresh.

Never dodged any employees or given any hungry pensioners the finger as I did it though 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

Did you read the OP?

'Pretending'? How do you know there'll be no punishment for certain?
Especially since somebody else had SAID he was going to get into trouble?

Hiddenvoice · 09/07/2022 17:57

If I had not overheard the other colleague then I perhaps would have bought one maybe two at a push, j wouldn’t have bought the lot. Since the young guy will end up getting into trouble, I would have left it so he could sort it out.

Roselilly36 · 09/07/2022 17:57

I have to say, I hate it when I see in a supermarket, someone taking the lot of special offer products or yellow labels, just so selfish. Certainly not something I would do, just shows a pull the ladder up Jack mentality.

Anxiernie · 09/07/2022 17:59

I wouldn't have taken the lot, but I would have taken advantage of the low price even it were a mistake, and taken a couple of packs. Maybe one for tonight and one for the freezer. I would have left some for him to rectify or sell to others.

There was a price list at the school fair last weekend for drinks. The low alcohol beers were meant to be £3.50-£4.50 but the cans of sparkling juice were £1. I asked for a beer, but the guy got the price wrong and charged me £1. I'm not going to correct him, even though I know he's wrong.

Granted, it's only a few quid compared to being reduced to 10% on fish!

MrsClatterbuck · 09/07/2022 18:00

This reminds me of years ago when buying red wine at Sainsburys and they had this offer of £12 bottles of wine being sold for £6. When at the till the wine came up at £2.99 a bottle. I didn't notice properly until in the car and looking at my receipt. I confess I went back and bought a few more though we did end up giving 6 bottles as a gift me very reluctantly but it was a thank you for a favour we had received

Exactly.
I can see myself doing that if I was really struggling quite frankly, but I wouldn't be proud, or pleased with myself for 'scoring a bargain'. I'd feel very guilty.

Because if I was the person behind me... and I saw someone else score the lot.. how would I have felt then?

Ori1 · 09/07/2022 18:01

I think most blokes would have done this. He thinks he was doing the best thing for the family!! He saw an opportunity, he had his family in mind & he grabbed it. Let him be happy with himself.

queenie2016 · 09/07/2022 18:01

I'd of took the lot I doubt the store will even realise 🤷🏼‍♀️

Rachaelrachael · 09/07/2022 18:02

Oh my cod, your husband's behaviour was a-trout-cious

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/07/2022 18:02

Your dog is more important than someone who could have used the fish to feed their family?

OK.
