Would you have bought the fish?

My DH has just gone to the supermarket. There was a young lad reducing stock, had been told to reduce a whack of fish (mainly salmon). Reckon he's made a mistake - instead of reducing it BY 10%, he reduced it TO 10%. About twelve packs of fresh fish fillets, reduced in value from about £80 to £8.

Another employee had clocked it and came over to say 'You're going to get a row for that'. So there was a very limited number of these really, really cheap packets of fish.

He bought the lot. Was this unreasonable, knowing it was a fuck up? And was it unreasonable, as in greedy, to take them all?

Thing is, if we'd bought the salmon for full price the dog would have got a taste. I shared that info because someone had said there was a previous post where someone's husband had some something similar but with the intention of it all feeding the dog.

Our dog always gets a tidbit of tasty fish, full whack or yellow sticker 🤷🏻‍♀️

If DH did that, he'd get it for every meal until it had all gone.

The replies on here are hilarious 😂 OP’s husband has somehow gone from being a savvy shopper who quietly took advantage of reduced salmon to a villain who steals food from the mouths of pensioners 🥴

Three Tesco employees missed the opportunity to correct the error, if there even was one, (the original employee, the one who noticed what was happening and the checkout assistant) and had it been decided that there was a mistake then nobody else would have been able to buy the salmon at that price.

And so what if the dog had some? I hope he enjoyed every mouthful 😌

Mumsnet is another planet 🤣 sooooo painfully middle class.

We were in M & S yesterday because oh fancied their Smoked haddock. The pack size is usually a single portion size and then a much smaller piece . Yes at a push you could have one pack between two but it would be a little miserly , so rather than that we usually have a pack each with a few peas , no potato.
The price was over £ 9 a pack , when last time it was around £5 - £6 , needless to say £18 for haddock , it stayed on the shelf !

Georgyporky · 09/07/2022 18:37

The lad will only get in trouble if he's found out - i.e. his colleague rats on him.

CharlotteUnaNatalieThompson · 09/07/2022 18:39

Well I'd have bought the fish and I reckon a good proportion of the virtue signallers on this thread would have too and kept schtum...

Gingermoth · 09/07/2022 18:40

Can we have a link to the chicken grabber thread please?

Threeboysandadog · 09/07/2022 18:41

We are a low income family. Desperate times call for desperate measures. I would have bought the fish.

Weareallvirgins · 09/07/2022 18:42

Fabulous. What's for tea? Fish? 🐠🐠😂😂😂🐟🐟🐟

Bananarama21 · 09/07/2022 18:56

Appalling behaviour I'm guessing it's the same poster who's husband stole all the chicken.

Genuinely wasn't trying to be goady (and didn't know about previous posts either). He came home all chuffed at his bargain, I was a bit :/ at the situation, came on to get everyone's take on it.

Making a lot of women I don't know angry online isn't really my idea of a fun time 😂

Genuinely what was the point of you posting then?

Alivekicking · 09/07/2022 18:57

I think there's a difference between what a lot of people say they'd do and what they'd actually do. So many are struggling right now. I can't call you DH unreasonable for saving some money people where possible. I think many are upset they didn't get there first!
If he'd left, chances are they'd have changed the labels and nobody would have bought it cheaper.

PortalooSunset · 09/07/2022 18:57

Definitely unreasonable to take them all.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/07/2022 19:01

Just to throw petrol on the fire:

  1. If an employer tells an employee to do something they need to give very clear instructions that can't be misunderstood and check that the employee has grasped what's required. Sounds like the supermarket failed there by not making sure that the young lad knew what he was required to do.
  2. If the young lad had a clear explanation but either wasn't paying full attention or doesn't have the arithmetical skills and/or common sense to reduce by 10% rather than to 10% he shouldn't be in that job.
  3. Decades ago workers routinely joined a union so they were protected from bullying management. We've lost that now. This young lad is unlikely to be in a union. This is his loss. He probably has little idea of how useful it could be to him.

We’re not rich but I can’t bring myself to buy yellow sticker stuff at the moment incase the many people in real poverty need it to feed their kids.

I know you said you are trying to live frugally, but if you have savings etc I don’t think it’s great behaviour. But in general that is how people become billionaires, by not giving a toss. Rather them than me.

Zone2NorthLondon · 09/07/2022 19:10

DH has done nothing wrong. He opportunistically capitalised on a bargain. No reason to pass up on a bargain for some misplaced sense of doing the right thing

Towcester · 09/07/2022 19:13

Don't think he did anything wrong. Especially as no other customers trying to reach for a pack. Maybe if the lad was new they need to improve their training/communication.

This is the most ridiculous response I've ever read 🙄🙄

c3pu · 09/07/2022 19:18

I always clear out the reduced beef, freeze it till I have a couple of kilos then batch cook a massive stew.

I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Soubriquet · 09/07/2022 19:22

MarvelMrs · 09/07/2022 18:29

I would have put them all in my basket and taken them back to the young man and asked him to mark them to the correct discount so he didn’t get in trouble.

Of course you would Hmm

I agree taking all 12 was greedy but it’s not the end of the world

Itsbackagain · 09/07/2022 19:23

No, I wouldn't have - that's just greedy. So many people trying to cut back would have been nice for others to enjoy some fresh fish. The fact the young lad was probably going to re-price it but didn't have the chance (and there's a good chance will get in serious trouble) makes it even worse.

Totally agree with this.

Dick move. So he noticed his colleague made a mistake and instead of helping him correct it he bought it all? The nice thing to do would have been to tell him the steps to take to rectify it.

Good on your Dh. If your Dh had left some on the shelf I think the pricing would have been corrected.

If I see anything that we eat on the shelf for very little money then I will get the lot.

Dont know anyone who would leave some for me or anyone else.

Kennykenkencat · 09/07/2022 19:26

Also when did the Dh work at the supermarket

PurpleFlower1983 · 09/07/2022 19:28

The dick move was potentially letting the young lad get in trouble, your husband is a complete knob for that. If he had just bought all the fish without knowing that it would have been fair game, if a little greedy.
