Off on holiday soon. I’m a size 18, so quite heavy. We’re off to a European city for a week and will be walking a lot. Normally this is fine. But the temp is supposed to be in the 30s!!!! Any tips for a fat woman in the heat?

Thigh lube!

Mandy real cotton clothes. I can’t believe how much my life has changed since spending a bit more on quality clothing. I used to buy a lot from new look and primark and it’s all synthetic stuff that just boils you alive in the heat!

MiniMoosey · 09/07/2022 16:14

That should say “and real cotton.” Don’t know who Mandy is 🤣

Bagpuss2022 · 09/07/2022 16:16

Chub rub shorts saved my life is Florida this May as a bigger lady

Sunshineandrainbow · 09/07/2022 16:17

Take a hand fan I prefer the non battery type.
Wear anti rub shorts from M and S
Cooling spray helps too.
I just bought a lovely green maternity dress from Next I have worn today for first time and people have complimented it in tesco! I go for Maternity as the bigger sizes tend to be too big at the top and this hides tummy.
Enjoy some cooling ice ream.

Really comfy open sandals, chub rub shorts, anti perspirant under boobs, stay extremely well hydrated, cold cloths on neck and wrists when you're back in your accommodation, and natural fibres

whoamitodisabrie · 09/07/2022 16:21

Liquid talc

Beanomatica · 09/07/2022 16:23

Oooh yay holidays!

Here are my suggestions 🙂

I'd say definitely no polyester. Cotton and linen skirts / dresses / tops. Scrunchy or ruched no-iron type tops if possible, with a bit of a pattern - good for keeping some space between skin and fabric for air flow, also they will hide sweat marks better.

Usually a light top with loose sleeves will feel cooler than sleeveless. Also less chance of sunburn!

A big sunhat and carry a little fan in your bag. But don't carry too much in your bag so you don't get even hotter lugging something really heavy.

Wet your face / neck / temples with a splash of water or damp cloth as often as needed and try to keep make-up to a minimum.

Comfy supportive shoes with airflow - sturdy sandal type.

Drink lots of water.

Do your big walking early in the day if possible and relax after lunch in an air-conditioned cafe / museum or hotel pool if you have one. Walk again after dinner.

Have a lovely time 😊

@Stylishkidintheriot why would you say 'fat' instead of overweight? It doesn't sound very nice... in fact quite derogatory...

Beanomatica · 09/07/2022 16:24

Sorry I'm a slow typer so x-posted with everybody!

What? Op can call herself what she likes!

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 09/07/2022 16:25

I got a load of the really cheap primark cycling shorts, £2.50 a pair and they are fab for this heat. Pairing them with a thin longline tshirt, short dress or one of the long line baggy buttons up shirts.

Stylishkidintheriot · 09/07/2022 16:26

Oh yes to cotton! Was shopping last weekend with my slim friend: she knows my style in clothes, but often I would touch something and be like “oh no... feels horrible”. When “modelling” what I was planning to take with me, DH reminded me that I would be in hot weather, so don’t take anything that would not be loose!

twilightcafe · 09/07/2022 16:26

Loose cotton/linen tops from Kit and Kaboodal.

neverbeenskiing · 09/07/2022 16:27

Surely OP is entitled to call herself whatever she likes. If you don't like the word fat then you're free to use euphemisms, but that doesn't mean OP has to describe herself in terms you consider "nice".

Stylishkidintheriot · 09/07/2022 16:27

calling myself fat is not derogatory. I am fat!!! It’s not a value judgement! It doesn’t make me a less worthy person.

Hear hear!!!

CadburyCrunchy · 09/07/2022 16:33

@Stylishkidintheriot what I meant was if someone else referred to your body type as fat, would that not offend / upset you that's all!

addler · 09/07/2022 16:39

@CadburyCrunchy for me, it depends on the intent behind it.

Fat is only an insult if you think it's something bad.

Not ideal, from a health perspective? Sure. But much as the same as smoking/drinking/whatever is. But it doesn't get anywhere near the vitriol from being fat does.

I am fat. I have brown hair. I have brown eyes. I am average height. I have a scar on my back. These are all facts about me.

I am not any less of a worthy person due to any of them.

I am trying to take away the power of the negative connotations the word fat has- if someone uses it to insult me I will clap them for their observational skills.

Frequent · 09/07/2022 16:40

@CadburyCrunchy I'm with you actually.
Most people know that fat is an insult. There is a movement to change this and I can see op doesn't mind calling herself fat but she isn't the only size 18 person this is a quality that others share with her and she if she hadn't said her size it probably would've been less offensive. Saying I'm a size 18 so quite heavy and fat these are judgments on something that many other women who might be reading this share with op. Op could have said I'm size 18 or size 18+ tips for hot weather then that would have been neutral. It's like calling certain physical characteristic witchy or unprofessional you'd get most MNers saying it's not right to describe these features that way even if you are talking about yourself but God forbid it's anything about being kind about weight then the usual uproar about fat shaming works and we lost sight of what a normal body looks like blah blah.

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/07/2022 16:43

Cotton and linen
sloggi knickers and bras
shirts and trousers from seasalt
Patagonia have good wash and wear travel clothes in techy non sweaty fibres
Sandals with good support, either go to a camping place for walking Sandals or a brand like flip flop
(I am the cutting edge of style oh yes)
if you tend to get sweaty boobs and back then Dermol 500 is a good antibacterial body lotion
if wearing skirts in the evening then thigh rub stick or Chubb shorts (do not wear skirts in the day, trousers Much better for walking
hat
handbag fan if you get v hot

MintyGreenDreams · 09/07/2022 16:45

I was just about to google Mandy real cotton clothes 😂

unsync · 09/07/2022 16:48

Fat person here too - shorts from Big Bloomers are fab. I was in France in June when temps were mid 30s and their shorts were so comfy and cool.

BTW being called fat doesn't offend / upset me either as I am fat 😊

@CadburyCrunchy @Frequent

Fat isn’t a derogatory word, it’s just a describer. It can be used in a derogatory way of course, but so can lots of words.

I am fat, and I have blue eyes and (currently) pink toe nails. All of these are just descriptions of what I look like.
