to ask for tips for a fat woman in the heat?!

Off on holiday soon. I’m a size 18, so quite heavy. We’re off to a European city for a week and will be walking a lot. Normally this is fine. But the temp is supposed to be in the 30s!!!! Any tips for a fat woman in the heat?

OP posts:
BlueStarfish · 09/07/2022 19:22

My brain read "woman in heat" instead of "woman in the heat"! 😂

HRTQueen · 09/07/2022 19:24

Cotton bra liner no more sore under boobs has been my best buy this year

hand fan, shorts for under clothes drink plenty of water and keep

Theonewiththecandles · 09/07/2022 19:26

As a fellow fat person, I highly highly highly recommend snag tights chub rub shorts
Primark or similar cycle shorts will do the job but I find some of them can dig into my thighs when I sit down as the leg hem is a bit small for me even though the rest fits, but these chub rubs shorts have never rolled up for me and they're a hell of a lot thinner. They are tights material so lots of airflow. Worth more than their weight in gold!
I wouldn't recommended just chopping up some leggings unless you're decent enough on a sewing machine to hem them yourself, can only forsee them rolling up constantly!

Lanacane anti chafing gel (about £6/7 in boots) is pretty good. I don't like using topical stuff for days out as I find it needs reapplying. Good for just an evening meal out maybe but not for a full day sightseeing imo.

Stay hydrated! Most people don't drink anywhere near enough, and booze doesn't really count. I know it's cliche but drink that water like your life depends on it because it very well could.

As many people have said, natural fibres are best. Personally I avoid colours like grey where sweat patches are the most obvious. Consider a blade less wearable fan. Play around with updos that are easy and quick but still look nice. My personal favourite is that big claw clips are back in style so a quick twirl of my hair, slap the clip in and I look right on trend with my hair up nicely

HRTQueen · 09/07/2022 19:29

And keep hair up

I keep my hair damp as much as I can (I wash it then tie it back so keeps damp for ages)

Gotchanumbagloria · 09/07/2022 19:31

Spray bottle for water cooling.

@Stylishkidintheriot why would you say 'fat' instead of overweight? It doesn't sound very nice... in fact quite derogatory...

But she called HERSELF fat!

Overweight means the same!

Pifflewiffle · 09/07/2022 19:36

Neck fan that looks like headphones can get on amazon

I have one. It has a charger not batteries so you don’t forget an adapter if you get one. I like it outside but on a hot bus/train etc it doesn’t help as much.

i have linen dungarees from kit and kaboodle. They’re one size and fit 8-18 (or supposed to). I’m a 14 but have a condition that messes with my autonomic system and I can’t cope with heat. These dungarees are the coolest thing I’ve found.

Sloggi knickers are fab.

m&s cool comfort anti-chafe shorts. On me the legs don’t roll up which is good.

Pifflewiffle · 09/07/2022 19:38

Meant to say I’m a 14 and the kit and kaboodle have plenty room left in them. And you just shorten or lengthen them by tying a knot in the straps

FangsForTheMemory · 09/07/2022 19:38

Cover up. I am a size 22 and I wear stone coloured chinos and long-sleeved white linen shirts. No need for smelly itchy suncream making you sweat.

HashtagShitShop · 09/07/2022 19:40

Rechargable neck fans - goes around your neck, charges with phone charger and totally hands free. They last up to 8 hours depending on the speed you have them.

Bruidine cream when you do get chapped skin/sweat rash/torn skin etc. Never known anything - not even sudacrem - mend it as fast.

Shower when you get back to the hotel room and change your clothes.

Leave your air conditioning as low as possible but leave a note saying that you wish it to remain this low - housekeeping always turned mine back up when I was in London last year - bloody annoying.

Liquid talc. Something for thigh chub rub. Also don't be afraid - rather graphic - to put some up onto the area near bumcheeks where full briefs go (obviously away from membranes etc) as I can feel it there sometimes but only tealise it when I go for a wee and the skin burns

Lots of water - bottles/drinks out and about/refillable bottles etc. Keep hydrated as you will sweat it out faster than you can put it in.

Electrolyte tablets - I use the High5 zero ones as I have hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and I lose a lot of the electrolytes I need and this gets them back faster. Literally one dissolved in a glass or bottle of water and I feel a lot better a lot quicker than just water/soft drinks etc. It also helps with cramps.

Handheld fan you can put on the bedside table somehow (ones I've seen in boyes have a circlular base you can fit into to use as a charging stand - I can't sleep without a fan in the summer.

A good antiperspirant deoderant that doesn't mark clothes.

There are some wipes etc called sweatblock that is meant to help sweating on the face when you put them on. You apply to your face the night before (avoiding eyes, nose and mouth) and go to sleep and then wash off in the morning. This iis meant to help with heavy facial sweating. I find they don't work but I do have full body hyperhidrosis and sweat from top of my head to toenails so even though they are for HH I'm probably too big a challenge for them haha. You must have a DRY face before putting them on or ouch.

There's also deoderants for HH called Odaban and perspirex (and others) that are to help with heavy sweating too. Again they area must be bone dry (and I mean bone dry - like dried with a hairdryer as well as a towel) or you will be very very sore but applied at night 7 days a week for a couple of weeks can reduce or remove sweating during the day. These ones I don't recomend for your face as you will be v sore and v frozen and if it drips in your eyes - ow!!!

Cooling towels. Special fabric you wet and wrap around your neck and wipe your face etc. If they warm up you simply 'snap them' (ie quick pulling from middle out two/three times in a row) and they cool off. You can also wear as a turban type/hairband too - www.amazon.co.uk/cooling-towels/s?k=cooling+towels You can also rewet them where possible too. Some come with their own little plastic pot or little bag to keep them in.

Chillow - if you can take it (I don't go abroad so don't know the rules) and keep it in a fridge during the day (mini bar?) and then lay your face in it .... heaven. Bit extra to add to the packing though haha!

Natural fibre clothing - especially underwear where possible.

Nat6999 · 09/07/2022 19:44

Magicool spray is my saviour, spray it straight up in the air when you get in bed, it comes down like a cool misty wind.

Ooh no thanks! As much skin on show as possible for me!

Nat6999 · 09/07/2022 19:45

Mitchum cream deodorant under your boobs, in all creases & on inside of thighs.

I'd say the most important thing is planning your day well: up early and sightseeing, then lazy lunch and a siesta in the hottest part of the day followed by a swim and then back out for a stroll. Follow the locals.

I live in a place that's hot for much of the year and genuinely, the only people who are out in the afternoon heat are tourists - amazing if they can manage it but I couldn't! I know there's a feeling of only having so long to see everything, but better to see less and fully enjoy it. I'm not immune to this after 7 years living in hot places and every so often do too much and find myself vomming come late afternoon because of too much sun.

Also, it sounds really obvious but walk in the shade. It's a running joke that on our road people walk on the left in the morning and on the right in the afternoon. At lunchtime nobody walks anywhere because that would be madness.

For everything else, as above. Pop into a pharmacy and treat yourself to an Avene thermal water spray to spritz yourself regularly. Bliss!

Oh, and all the nicest shops always have the coolest air con when you need to escape the heat 😉

LyraSilvertongueBelacqua · 09/07/2022 19:52

@FatAgainItsLettuceTime where do you get your longline T-shirts and shirts from please? Can never find them to suit!

OP - I think everyone has you covered here, I'd echo shorts under dresses (I go for the Primark ones, they're cotton) and keeping your hair off your neck.

TheBikiniExpert · 09/07/2022 20:02

Avoid alcohol. Sadly, it just makes you feel hotter. At the very least, avoid it at lunchtime. I often feel like an ice cold beer in the heat but it makes me feel worse. Also leave shutters closed in your room to keep it cooler.

Favouritefruits · 09/07/2022 20:04

Thin cotton dresses, sandals and breathable anti chaffing shorts. M&S do two pairs of anti chafing shorts for just £20 the are so thin and lightweight feels like you have nothing on,I’m a size 16 wore them abroad last month and they did the job and more I’d recommend.

How childish are you.

isthismylifenow · 09/07/2022 20:09

I didn't see it mentioned, but try to go for light coloured clothing. Dark colours attract the heat.

Fat person here too - shorts from Big Bloomers are fab. I was in France in June when temps were mid 30s and their shorts were so comfy and cool.

BTW being called fat doesn't offend / upset me either as I am fat 😊

The Big Bloomers shorts are fab. I don't really understand how they keep you cool, but they do.

I have a few loose, linen dresses, that are great in hot weather. Linen feels cooler than cotton imo.

I am fat. I have excess body fat. Overweight is related to BMI and is bollox. Lean muscly people is overweight. I'm not ashamed of my fat. My social media handles are variations of Fat Woman. I refuse to be ashamed of my fat, it is neutral, just part of me. Let's not pretend I'm not fat just because other people are fatphobia i.e. they irrationally think I am lazy, stupid and immoral.

OP - cover up with cotton is my advice. Keep the sun off your skin. Easiest way to stay cool.

BlueStarfish · 09/07/2022 20:31

I'll probably be making use of some of the wonderful tips shared today. If you've got a handbag big enough for it I suggest a thermos water bottle with ice cold water and some wet wipes too.

Theoneinthemiddle · 09/07/2022 20:40

Drench a spaghetti top or vest in cold water. Wring out and wear under your dress. It’s heaven!

justasking111 · 09/07/2022 18:10

I wonder if you can still buy parasols bet they're great in the heat. Rise early walk , lunch and siesta in shade. Then evening walk if you must 😂

Yes you can! I’ve just bought a lovely orange one from brolliesgalore and it’s amazing. I reckon I could have sold it 20 times at the school sports day this week!

Somanymistakes · 09/07/2022 20:52

Chub rub shorts 💯
