Off on holiday soon. I’m a size 18, so quite heavy. We’re off to a European city for a week and will be walking a lot. Normally this is fine. But the temp is supposed to be in the 30s!!!! Any tips for a fat woman in the heat?

Wear loose clothing, and linen is fabulous in the heat. I live in linen in the NZ summer. Cotton is good also, just don't wear synthetics. I find dresses and skirts cooler than shorts/trousers.

Hashtagshitshop.
This is so helpful. I have hyperhidrosis of the head, face and neck and have yet to find anything that truly helps me. I will try electrolyte tablets and look into face wipes (I also have very sensitive skin so they might not be suitable but worth a try). I really empathise as it's really debilitating as well as embarrassing walking around literally dripping 🙁.

Neck fan that looks like headphones can get on amazon

YES! I’m bigger than you and mine saves me in the heat. Search portable neck fan on Amazon.

Put a bottle of water in the freezer overnight and put it in the back of your waistband when you go out the following day. A good few hours of relief. I am fat. Euphemisms not required.

I got chub rub shorts from Snag Tights for my last holiday and they were fantastic. I never usually wear shorter dresses in case they blow up and it felt so liberating to be able to knowing I had the shirts to cover my modesty. I wore a pair under a dress to a wedding recently and felt so comfortable all day.

@Stylishkidintheriot why would you say 'fat' instead of overweight? It doesn't sound very nice... in fact quite derogatory...

She's calling a spade a spade. Anyway it's not up to you to decide how other people describe themselves.

Oriunda · 09/07/2022 22:05

The spray water you get in supermarkets like Monoprix in France or in pharmacies. I use Monoprix own brand and take a small one with me everywhere.

Sudocreme is amazing for under boob chafing, and also to dab on any zits that appear from sweating.

I'm fat, it's a description. It's only bad when used in a derogatory way. Tbh quite a lot of ppl use 'overweight' in a derogatory was anyway.

To echo everyone else, chub rub shorts and moisture wicking undies.

And I also bought one of these! I don't actually wear it around my neck, I just hold it in front of my face. It has 6 powers and holds a decent charge

@LocalHobo yes us fatties get hotter and sweatier than thin people as we are carrying around extra weight. Eg the average 5'4 woman should weigh between 8-9.5st but if you're 12st + you're basically carrying a toddler with you everywhere. When I was skinny I was freezing in winter!

Also more 'folds' for sweat to gather under Blush

Penguinwaddles · 10/07/2022 11:15

My tip is to get up very, very early!

I find it much easier to acclimatise to the day's heat having got up when it was relatively cool and having been active at dawn, rather than roll out of bed in to a furnace. It's worth sacrificing a few hours rest and it helps you sleep better at night in the heat too!

Wear all cotton. Particularly bra.

Drink lots of water. Take regular cool showers.

And if you feel you are overheating, have a cold shower and don't dry yourself. Take a sarong, dip it in cold water and wrap it around you.

AfterSchoolWorry · 10/07/2022 11:15

I bought 3 pairs of white cotton leggings and cut them into thigh length shorts for under dresses, no chub rub!

A big wide rimmed hat also essential.

All cotton and linen clothes.

@Sunshineandrainbow do you have a link to your green dress?

I am more fat than thin but don't get any hotter than any average person. Do fat people get hotter? (And is thin an equally derogatory term?).

Sometimes. It is an insulator, after all - and the effort required to move a heavier body means the body temperature can be higher in the same atmospheric conditions. Same way somebody much lighter can feel the cold far more.

Plinkyplankyplonk · 10/07/2022 12:28

Snag shorts, decent footwear

Pifflewiffle · 10/07/2022 14:18

nippywoowoo. I have the same fan as you. I got it two years ago and it’s still working well. It’s definitely a help. I do wear mine round my neck as I’ve got hyperhidrosis of the head, face and neck so I can adjust the fans upwards and inwards for maximum cooling.
