Off on holiday soon. I’m a size 18, so quite heavy. We’re off to a European city for a week and will be walking a lot. Normally this is fine. But the temp is supposed to be in the 30s!!!! Any tips for a fat woman in the heat?

OP posts:
Vampirethriller · 09/07/2022 16:48

Chub rub shorts and loose linen dresses are what I do, non-wired bras and lots of water.

Mosaic123 · 09/07/2022 16:48

Hold a pretty umbrella most elegantly as you walk along to give you shade

Hats can be very hot.

roarfeckingroarr · 09/07/2022 16:48

The OP can describe herself however she likes.

If others choose to be offended... well... perhaps their energies would be better spent exercising.

CadburyCrunchy · 09/07/2022 16:49

@addler and @Frequent both very good posts and well written... I never thought of it like that... I would never refer to someone as 'fat' as I was brought up to believe it was a negative or hurtful way to describe someone... basically not noticing anything else about a person such as their nice hair or clothes etc and the only thing you notice is them being fat...

I was just about to google Mandy real cotton clothes 😂

Yeah me too.
I thought ooh plus size natural fibre brand, how exciting!

addler · 09/07/2022 16:54

I have to say I would never call anybody else fat, because it is a word that people use as an insult and I wouldn't want that to be something someone thought I was doing, however I don't think I'd comment on anyone's weight regardless of how big or small they were as you never know how someone feels about themselves, and everything is relative.

I guess for me it's just trying to take that power to hurt me away from people. It doesn't mean I am super pro-fat and loving my big body! Far far from it. When DS was a baby and I had horrible PND I remember taking him out by myself and it was the first time I felt happy for a while, and I was carrying him back across the road feeling happy and snuggling my beautiful baby and enjoying life again, and someone shouted out of a car window 'Oi you fat fucking whale'. And it crushed me.

All I can do is try and take that power away from people, to protect myself. But I'd never tell someone else what they should or shouldn't do, our stories are all different.

CadburyCrunchy · 09/07/2022 16:23

@Stylishkidintheriot why would you say 'fat' instead of overweight? It doesn't sound very nice... in fact quite derogatory...

🙄

MintJulia · 09/07/2022 16:55

Woven cotton or linen, rather than jersey.
Avoid polyester or nylon like the plague. You'll end up with sweat rash.

You can lose a lot of heat through hands and feet, so avoid polyester trainers, wear sandals.

Drink lots of water-based drinks, minimise alcohol intake and avoid anything sugary. Fruits and salad are mostly water so eat lots of them, and minimise carbs.

wear a hat, long skirts and thin cotton sleeves to keep the sun off your skin.

Sleep with windows open and mosquito nets down, if it's safe to do so.

HelloIloveyoutoo · 09/07/2022 16:59

Can someone explain what Chubb rub shorts are please- do they have a lock?

OohThatCat · 09/07/2022 16:59

Body Glide is amazing. I have tried all sorts or liquid talc etc for my thigh chub rub and Body Glide is the only thing that works, and works for ages! It's even stayed working after I've gotten out of the sea or pool. You can get it on Amazon or cycling shops. I was walking round Athens in 30+ degree heat and my thighs weren't sore at all. I do have chub rub shorts but they just add an extra layer and I found they made me sweat more!

isthismylifenow · 09/07/2022 17:01

I live in a hot country so larger ladies would generally wear looser fitting clothes, cotton is great, but they tend to crease. A nice big hat. Don't forget sunglasses. Sandals, not these jelly or plastic type as they slip when your feet sweat. Stay in the shade when possible. If you have a facility, freeze a bottle of water the night before, don't put in it your bag though as it will wet everything else. Those insulated bottles are great. A few blocks of ice in the bottle and your water stays cold.

A face mist is always nice and refreshing during the day.

And try not be out in the heat doing the most physical things during 12pm to 3pm.

Have a fabulous time 🌹

RudsyFarmer · 09/07/2022 17:01

I’m wearing my chub rub shorts right now off of aAmazon and they are WONDERFUL Game changer.

1VY · 09/07/2022 17:02

You need these towels

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07VSLJ7KJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

You pour some water on them, scrunch them up, shake them out and put around your neck. IRL they look more like a squarish scarf than a towel, it doesn’t look too weird wearing them.

LocalHobo · 09/07/2022 17:04

I am more fat than thin but don't get any hotter than any average person. Do fat people get hotter? (And is thin an equally derogatory term?).

1VY · 09/07/2022 17:07

And another vote for the fans you wear around your neck, they do look like headphones. I have these

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0888NR4M3/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Do not I repeat NOT take any form of denim. No matter how much the fashionistas tell you that denim shorts / jacket are indispensable.

Loose floaty clothes are the way to go. Nothing short or tight.

Do not take anything new, especially shoes but also clothes and cosmetics / toiletries. Try everything at home first.

addler · 09/07/2022 17:07

@LocalHobo Generally speaking yes- more fat equals more insulation and overweight people also produce more heat due to hormones and metabolism, and a higher heart rate due to having to work harder to move your heavier body around.

FarmGirl78 · 09/07/2022 17:14

Another vote for liquid talk!

I buy the one from Home Bargains in the baby section, white tube with pale blue cap. Its about £1.79 maybe. And I slather it over my bum cheeks in summer and it stops me getting sweaty (TMI, I know!). Honestly, its a game changer!!

I can also highly recommend the "Anti-Friction" stick from Decathlon Sports cycling isle. Its like a deodorant stick rather than a chub-rub cream so really easy to pop in your handbag, and much discreter to apply than lanicane antichaffing gel. Heaven for lardy inner thighs like mine!!

Yerroblemom1923 · 09/07/2022 17:14

@LocalHobo yes us fatties get hotter and sweatier than thin people as we are carrying around extra weight. Eg the average 5'4 woman should weigh between 8-9.5st but if you're 12st + you're basically carrying a toddler with you everywhere. When I was skinny I was freezing in winter!

featheryfancy · 09/07/2022 17:15

Cycling shorts
Cycling shorts
Cycling shorts

That's all I have to add

Philandbill · 09/07/2022 17:15

Another vote for chubb rub shorts, game changer :-)
snagtights.com/collections/chub-rub-shorts

FarmGirl78 · 09/07/2022 17:15

Ooh, the decathlon stick is also useful for rubbing on feet where shoes are rubbing or too tight!

KangarooKenny · 09/07/2022 17:17

Liquid talc from the kids section in Asda. Put it between and under your boobs, and on your chub rub.
Some chub rub type shorts. Think I got mine from Next.

ThirtyThreeTrees · 09/07/2022 17:18

I don't take heat well given I've bery pale sensitive skin.

3 things that help me hugely:-

A large sun hat that has a wide rim - keeps the heat off you head and out of your face

Footwear - make sure whatever you have one your feet has material that is lease likely to create sweety and sticky feet. I usually throw out the footwear on return from holiday - get something that absorbs the sweat and keeps your feet cool

Water - I put bottles of water in the freezer the night before or put cold water in a thermos flask etc.

SommerTen · 09/07/2022 17:20

I'm a size 14-16.
I have to wear something to stop 'chub rub' so I like the Big Bloomers Company 'Anti Chafing Short Leg Slip Shorts which come in various colours. Because they're only 16cm long I can wear short skirts & dresses with them. I've worn them abroad in nearly 40c heat.
