Off on holiday soon. I’m a size 18, so quite heavy. We’re off to a European city for a week and will be walking a lot. Normally this is fine. But the temp is supposed to be in the 30s!!!! Any tips for a fat woman in the heat?

Thread took an interesting turn 🙄

I'm no good in even U.K. heat but the tip from my Oz friends that really works is those water bead things sewn into a tube of thin cotton fabric worn around your neck - soak them then they evaporate over the day keeping you cool.
Ten mins on a sewing machine or you can buy them cheaply

CJSmith2019 · 09/07/2022 17:31

As others have said, pick the best time that you can for walking. Also moisturising foot masks are heavenly at the end of the day to help with cooling down.

Have a great time!

IGotItInTheSales · 09/07/2022 17:33

this place is hilarious!!

you can't call yourself 'fat' without someone taking offence!!!

MintJulia · 09/07/2022 17:33

LocalHobo · 09/07/2022 17:04

I am more fat than thin but don't get any hotter than any average person. Do fat people get hotter? (And is thin an equally derogatory term?).

Yes, stored fat is very effective insulation. It's why lots of animals store fat before they hibernate. It keeps them warm when their heart rate is low, they are asleep and inactive.

KangFang · 09/07/2022 17:35

Wear cotton or linen only.
Anything else is not suitable for the sun.

Stay in the shade as much as possible.
Or enjoy being in the water.
Plenty sunblock and a big hat.
Plenty cold drinks and cold food.
Anything consumed hot is going to make you feel hotter.

@Stylishkidintheriot why would you say 'fat' instead of overweight? It doesn't sound very nice... in fact quite derogatory...

Fat is a physical fact, and shouldn't have a moral value placed on it. It is our culture and society that have gone all squeamish about the word and made it into a negative insult.

Many activists are now reclaiming the word as a neutral/positive word that they can use to describe themselves without prejudice.

LunchPoems · 09/07/2022 17:37

My best tip is to relax into the heat and not fight it. Walk a little more slowly, don’t rush. I’ve found changing my mindset to embrace the feeling of being warm helped me loads.

On clothes, maybe a nice wide leg jumpsuit?

Stylishkidintheriot · 09/07/2022 17:47

I think it’s been said upthread: but I call myself fat, as I am fat.

It shouldn’t be a negative word. It’s the same to me as having dark eyes, dark hair, pale skin, small feet: it’s just a physical fact.

im not ashamed of being fat.

the reason it is relevant to this thread is that being fat, my choice of clothing is going to be a bit different: the choice of shops I can shop in is different. What is comfortable on me is different from a slimmer person

and Yeah, I do get hotter now than I did when I was slimmer

If you do like a jumpsuit, I got a really nice one in sainsburys, with lemons printed on it. It’s flattering and I wore it a lot on my holiday.

AiryFairyLights · 09/07/2022 17:57

Talcum powder! Don’t leave home without it!
I wear thin leggings shorts under dresses and skirts too so my thighs rubbing - just cut an old pair of leggings down rather than spend money on something that won’t be seen!
Most important of all have a fab time!

orangeisthenewpuce · 09/07/2022 17:58

I'd advise against a hat. As a fatty (for that's what I am) I find having my head covered makes me even hotter.

ozymandiusking · 09/07/2022 18:06

I have just bought some sloggi long short things from Marisota, nude colour, £12 a pair, to stop the top of your legs getting sore. Great if you want to wear a skirt. They don't ride up which some of the other brands seem to do.

maddening · 09/07/2022 18:08

Chub rub shorts from snag tights.

Cuck00soup · 09/07/2022 18:08

Roll on Deodorant stops chub rub and saves taking an extra product.

Wear comfy shoes, cotton sundresses stop regularly for a cool drink and have fun!

Justdiscovered · 09/07/2022 18:08

A piece of cloth/ tea towel size - regularly wet with cold water and drape around your neck.
tegukar cold showers to bring your body temperature down

justasking111 · 09/07/2022 18:10

I wonder if you can still buy parasols bet they're great in the heat. Rise early walk , lunch and siesta in shade. Then evening walk if you must 😂

That should say “and real cotton.” Don’t know who Mandy is 🤣

I should have read this comment before I started searching for a cotton clothing shop called Mandy

calling myself fat is not derogatory. I am fat!!! It’s not a value judgement! It doesn’t make me a less worthy person.

Yes. 😁

People get very twitchy about the f word but I use it to be descriptive about myself. It does not describe any other attribute I may possess!

Yes to cotton. 👍😊

Fofftwenty21 · 09/07/2022 18:25

I have found using some roll-on deoderant and putting on my inner thighs where they rub - really helps with chafing and no need to wear chub rub shorts.

As long as you don't see yourself as less worthy.
it makes me sad when people refer to themselves in a certain way using certain words (because I worry that they are putting themselves down when they shouldn't be) , but as long as you have no self esteem issues that's the main thing. I have a habit of being unkind to myself.

EnigmaCat · 09/07/2022 18:39

I have used the cool packs (the thin ones used in cool boxes) from the freezer, placed in pockets (not directly on skin). This has worked for me and lasts over an hour. Condensation makes the cloth slightly damp which enhances the effect.

LaJoconde · 09/07/2022 18:41

Stay in the shade if you can.

i carry a kid’s umbrella and I have a UV blocking silver one as well which folds up. I find my head gets far too hot with a hat.

im not as fat as I was, and find heat easier to bear now, but I still walk up the shady side of the street, and never stop in the middle of a sun baked plaza - figure out where you are from the comfort of the shade.

stop regularly to sip water. Bring a handkerchief to dip in the water and use it on the back of your neck if you need to.

Choose the north side in a restaurant, away from any wall that has absorbed the heat over the day. Bring a scarf to sit on as the steps / seats can get very hot

Don’t sit near the kitchens as the a/c isn’t usually on behind the scenes, and you’ll get a hot blast anytime the servers come out.

for clothes, surprisingly long sleeves stop you from getting hot. I always bring a long sleeved light cotton shirt with a collar and long skirt - it stops the sun from frying you, and is nice and blowsy.

Enjoy your trip- you’ll have a great time

Nutsabouttopic · 09/07/2022 18:43

Panty liners in your bra. Put sticky strip on bottom band of your bra so pan/y liners are in cups of bra and absorb sweat

Hold a pretty umbrella most elegantly as you walk along to give you shade

Hats can be very hot.

game changer! I'm going to be doing that :-)

JanDec · 09/07/2022 19:14

I have gained too much weight in the last 18 months or so.

I have never struggled with heat before but am struggling now, it feels awful and unhealthy.

I am losing weight, that is my tip op, to lose weight and be less fat. You asked for opinions, this is mine. 16/8 fasting gets some pounds off quickly.

While losing weight, comfortable walking sandals, cotton rather than linen and a nice hat and shades. Stay in the shade, try not to exert yourself and drink lots of cool water or hot tea without milk.
