What's so special about Lurpack?

007DoubleOSeven · 09/07/2022 12:55

I've noticed before how Lurpack seems to carry social kudos as the butter of choice for those that way inclined and now everyone is losing their shit about it selling for record prices. And people who use Lurpack as their usual butter always seem to find a way to mention it ("fetch the Lurpack from the larder will you darling?") or place it in pride of place of the breakfast table (haven't they heard of butter dishes?)...

I'm not asking about the cost of living. Obviously the price of Lurpack is indicative of the financial hardship we're all facing and like petrol prices it's utterly ridiculous and horrifying.

But...Why all the fuss about Lurpack? I've had it many times, it's fine but it's just...a butter.

Is it churned by maidens and lightly salted with their diamond-like tears?

I do think it's really nice, very salty which I like, but I've never bought it because I'm not paying double for butter.

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 09/07/2022 13:51

We use the cheapest salted block butter available on the day, and keep the one we're using in a lidded butter dish out of the fridge. I keep back up supplies in the fridge til needed. Never goes off and is always perfectly spreadable. I would never buy margarine or spreadable butter of any description in a plastic tub, so I'm puzzled by the Lurpak thing too.

We are a vegan household so I never buy butter, but I noticed Lurpak was £2.50 in Waitrose this morning.

I'm not sure why people think Waitrose is always very expensive.

It’s the spreadable version that’s gone up massively. The £2.50 one is the normal butter.

Brideandprejudice · 09/07/2022 13:56

I'm sorry but clearly I'm missing something- what's a butter dish?

Beefilm · 09/07/2022 13:58

stealthninjamum · 09/07/2022 13:02

I assume it’s just because it’s a brand name we’ve all heard of, my mum used to buy lurpak when I was a child 40 years ago, whereas I couldn’t name another butter brand. I tend to buy own brand butter.

That's funny because I grew up thinking Anchor was the standard brand name used to indicate butter, in the same way that we call vacuum cleaners hoovers.

DorritLittle · 09/07/2022 13:59

what's a butter dish?

Um, yes you are missing something.

shakingmytambourineatyou · 09/07/2022 14:00

As an experiment, I just asked dh "fetch the Lurpak from the larder will you darling?". He told me to come inside, out of the sun.

DorritLittle · 09/07/2022 14:00

For me margarine was The Flora!

KittyMcKitty · 09/07/2022 14:02

Hate the spreadable stuff but feel the same about this with all brands - it’s not butter!!

love the slightly salted Lurpak - why? Just like the taste and it’s good for baking. It’s the butter we’ve always had so it’s comforting and familiar.

DSGR · 09/07/2022 14:02

I don’t know anybody who shows off about butter, find new friends.

SpidersAreShitheads · 09/07/2022 14:03

They’re waiting for the little man with the trumpet to jump out I reckon.

DorritLittle · 09/07/2022 14:03

@SpidersAreShitheads 😆

AnguaResurgam · 09/07/2022 14:04

re you sure- it's the 1kg massive tubs that have gone up to £10. That's the same as £2.50 per block, as most mass-production butters are sold in 250g

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/07/2022 14:04

Nothing at all.

But it’s been heavily advertised and promoted for years, to make people think it’s something special.

As for being a ‘middle class status symbol’ as a pp said, 😂😂.

If such a buttery thing exists, it’d be e.g. the pricey Cornish butter with sea salt crystals, or something similar, but French. Probably from Normandy.

In any case, why so many people choose to support Danish farmers, rather than our own, I don’t understand.

maddiemookins16mum · 09/07/2022 14:05

Nowt. It tastes off.
much prefer Anchor.

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 09/07/2022 14:05

Must admit that I'm not keen on Lurpak ...spreadable or butter block.

It's Danish anyway so I prefer something made closer to home.

LookingGlassMilk · 09/07/2022 14:08

Lurpak is horrible. Butter shouldn't be white. If it's white then that means the cows are being raised in sheds. It's the equivalent to eggs from battery hens.

Butter should be yellow. That's from the vitamin A the cows get from grazing. I buy Kerrygold.

LaFeuilleMorte · 09/07/2022 14:08

I’ve been eating Lurpak since I was an impoverished graduate, so it’s not an aspirational thing for me - I really hate the taste of rich, yellow, buttery butters like Anchor and its ilk (we had Country Life at home, which made me heave). Gross, rich, and sickly to my taste. I didn’t eat butter for a long time, but I missed my buttered toast. I like the mildness of Lurpak and its own-brand sisters.

ilovesummers · 09/07/2022 14:09

It's much nicer and I enjoy it on occasion on my toast or biscuits.
The taste is far better. I can afford it.

That was helpful

DrNo007 · 09/07/2022 14:10

Lurpak is pale and horrible. We eat Berkeley Farm organic which is deep yellow from all the beta-carotene and flavoursome.

FreyaStorm · 09/07/2022 14:11

I used to be a Lurpak-er, funny enough I thought it was a povo butter. I didn’t realise it was so special.
My new love is President slightly salted.
Going to try Kerrygold next.

MissAtomicBomb1 · 09/07/2022 14:11

FunnysInLaJardin · 09/07/2022 13:25

when I was younger Lurpak was always seen as rather try hard WC. Certainly not an aspirational butter.

🤣🤣 at 'aspirational butter'
Wow! who knew that even butter could be an indicator of social class. I can only think that anyone who judges others on their bloody butter must be an insecure snob.

President is my go to if they don’t have Lurpak in stock - v similar.

@KittyMcKitty I’ve only just discovered it thanks to MN recs. I like that it’s mixed with cream and not some sort of oil.
