This means after January my combined bill will be £576 per month!

BorgQueen · 08/07/2022 19:58

Just worked out our useage at the predicted cap - £220 a month, that’s over £100 a month more than now, on the current price cap. Kicking myself now for not fixing at £180 🙄
Low income families are well and truly stuffed, as are pensioners who are only on State pension.

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2022 20:00

We already pay 180 , so this is a blow.
People will freeze to death this winter

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2022 20:00

180 a month I mean

Excited101 · 08/07/2022 20:01

This makes no sense. It cannot be the case, people will just die 🤷‍♀️

MintJulia · 08/07/2022 20:01

It's crazy, isn't it.

I've spent the last two months stacking wood so next winter we can run the log burner as our primary source of heat, and the central heating only if it gets very cold. By the end of October, I should have enough to see us through..

Lalosalamanca · 08/07/2022 20:08

How is that even possible? I don't believe it, yet am unsure if that's me in denial as a coping method or what lol xx

cakeorwine · 08/07/2022 20:10

www.theguardian.com/money/2022/jul/08/uk-energy-bills-rise-winter-energy-price-cap

We need to look at homes, insulate them and look at how we can significantly reduce the cost of energy.

Current Government support is going to be wiped out by this. It's also going to affect inflation, businesses who need energy to run, everything...

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2022 20:12

It's the reality and I'm not sure what people will do.
We live in a modest house with a fairly new gas boiler and I try and cut back etc, but it's still bound to go up. The four hundred will help a bit, but it t won't go that far come October.

notacleaner · 08/07/2022 20:12

I can’t understand what’s going to happen. We’re never going to do what France has done are we? We’re all fucked. I feel sick, and frustrated because I’ve worked so hard for a promotion and literally all my extra wage is going to go straight into the cost of fucking living crisis. I know that’s ultimate first world problems but it’s so hard when you can’t get on however hard you work because of world governments fucking our economy all the time. It’s just so unfair.

Whitehorsegirl · 08/07/2022 20:14

Time to put electricity, gas and water back into public ownership. Simple as that.

We should all stop paying these ridiculous bills as a protest and force government to do something about it.

Other countries like France have managed to keep cost down. We need to stop letting corporate companies make profit out of people's misery...

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 08/07/2022 20:15

The Tories have been VERY quiet about this for months. Regardless of the Johnson pantomime, the government have failed the country on this. They have no intention of doing anything meaningful. People are going to die.

WhatsHoppening · 08/07/2022 20:17

It is horrendous and I had a very unusual cry in the shower earlier. Money is so tight- we have been counting down to our youngest getting 30 free hours and some relief and it’s all going to be eaten up on gas and electric (and that’s with us cutting back and realistically being fucking freezing all winter). I’m sad and angry that two professionals working in decent jobs with two kids can’t afford any kind of quality of life for their family compared to previous generations.

lancsgirl85 · 08/07/2022 20:17

We already pay £268 a month after the April increase. So we're going to end up with a bill close to £400 a month. I honestly feel sick. 😭

Sirzy · 08/07/2022 20:19

Shit that’s scary. We have cut back as much aa we can but with a disabled child who has pumps to charge and stuff we can’t cut back anymore.

what is being done at the moment won’t come close to helping

Yep this is how I feel too. And if we are starting to worry about bills, both of us on decent salaries and both working, two kids, very average lifestyle, then how the hell are those less fortunate going to manage? Sad What a mess. I'm on maternity leave and will be over the winter and it's going to leave us very tight as our bill is probably going to rise to £300+ a month.

alphapie · 08/07/2022 20:21

Very glad we fixed for 5 years in 2020! Paid more in the beginning but it's paying dividends now and after October even more so

lancsgirl85 · 08/07/2022 20:22

Literally just said this exact same thing to DP. This is giving me anxiety and sleepless nights and we both work and earn relatively well. I can't even begin to imagine what it will be like for those who earn less. The whole thing is scary. 😞

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2022 20:24

I saw a young couple in tesco with a small child putting things back and keeping a check of it all on the scanner : they looked so fed up and worried trying to work out the weekly budget. I overheard her telling her partner to put things back. My heart went out to them it really did , I've been there with little kids , but never as bad as they seemed to be and it's so hard with children too. Now this news on top too.
It's so difficult

plugee · 08/07/2022 20:27

I heard this & it's likely to be higher when we get there, crazy

Hugasauras · 08/07/2022 20:28

And I've never known so much chat from my friends about money worries, and these are generally professional couples who are both in work and are on decent salaries.

People are going to freeze to death, starve, or just kill themselves due to the stress. In 2022. While there's so much money floating around the world. It's bonkers and terrifying.

It wont be anywhere near seasoned enough to burn safely this winter u less you want a chimney fire. Wood needs to be seasoned for a whole year. Hence the name.

plugee · 08/07/2022 20:29

Because the public won't stand for it.
We are far more passive & there's a strong tendency to blame the people on the boats.
