www.theguardian.com/money/2022/jul/08/uk-energy-bills-rise-winter-energy-price-cap

We need to look at homes, insulate them and look at how we can significantly reduce the cost of energy.

Current Government support is going to be wiped out by this. It's also going to affect inflation, businesses who need energy to run, everything...

I said this on the other thread. We need some sort of longer term plan. The nationalisation of utilities and laws/ /grants to get all homes fully insulated. Just giving one off financial support isn't enough.

I can’t understand what’s going to happen. We’re never going to do what France has done are we? We’re all fucked. I feel sick, and frustrated because I’ve worked so hard for a promotion and literally all my extra wage is going to go straight into the cost of fucking living crisis. I know that’s ultimate first world problems but it’s so hard when you can’t get on however hard you work because of world governments fucking our economy all the time. It’s just so unfair.

Same for us. We had a good wage increase, childcare dropped down due to EY funding kicking in and it has all vanished. I'm glad our circumstances have got better, but it's ard not getting on and i just cant be bothered with life anymore. I'm still renting at 40 and this was our chance to save a deposit.

People still aren't protesting yet or refusing to pay though, which I think is the only way things will change.

BorgQueen · 08/07/2022 20:34

Yes, my DD was looking forward to DGS having the 30 free hours in nursery come September - it should have saved her £320 a month, over half that will go on energy bills come October then.

Clymene · 08/07/2022 20:35

I'm going to start burning coal again and open up all the fireplaces. Over £5,000 a year is madness.

We need both a short term and a long term plan.

I'm really starting to worry now. Luckily we’re expecting a 2% pay rise. That should pay for a whole fucking day of fucking energy.

TheFairyCaravan · 08/07/2022 20:36

Something is going to have to give. People just won’t be able to afford to heat their houses. Are they going to wait until we have pensioners and the chronically sick freezing to death before they prick their ears up?

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2022 20:36

Will the new PM address these issues ?
It'll be a while to get one, but whoever it is needs to get to a plan
If only Martin Lewis was in charge!

It is horrendous and I had a very unusual cry in the shower earlier. Money is so tight- we have been counting down to our youngest getting 30 free hours and some relief and it’s all going to be eaten up on gas and electric (and that’s with us cutting back and realistically being fucking freezing all winter). I’m sad and angry that two professionals working in decent jobs with two kids can’t afford any kind of quality of life for their family compared to previous generations.

Same here for me. It's disgusting. They don't give a tiny fuck about people who work hard and have kids, let alone those that can't work and are on benefits.

I have kind of hit a boiling point after this week's pantomime today. I've just had enough of the lack of social mobility here and in the rest of the world. Our leaders are crooks. I'm disgusted by our government. I am ready to protest and make things change.

sleezeandwineparty · 08/07/2022 20:38

This is what people have voted for, a government that blames us,immigrants and there are less they will blame us, like they kept doing during Covid.
They don't give a shiny shit and will continue to siphon off our money to their rich mates like with covid. The railways get cost of living increases off commuters but don't pass this money onto the staff and our money gets hived off to more indecently rush people!

Look at the profits the energy and petrol companies have made this year! When we are all struggling!

Yeah but when pressure groups like Insulate Britain block the roads people bitch and whine about the unemployed unwashed hippies with nothing better to do.

BadJanetsMobile · 08/07/2022 20:39

Genuinely very worried
we have a decent income, 1 dc, and we will feel the squeeze but I am worried about older family members who are on state pension and families with low/ no income

major worries!

Tryingtokeepgoing · 08/07/2022 20:39

Is this the Martin Lewis who was shouting from the rooftops for people not to take on a fixed deal earlier in the year? Good job I ignored him…. His model worked in a market with many players, low barriers to entry and stable energy prices. He made millions out of churning customers around via his website. But, that model is broken in the current market…I think he said last month he was ‘out of tools’ to help people. He helped himself most ;)

Now I know that doesn’t help anyone who didn’t fix, but after decades of falling prices for food and energy in real terms there was always going to be a correction at some point. Wait until this years harvest and grain prices to trickle through for more inflation to come, albeit not as severe as we’ve seen. You just have to look at the fundamentals of commodity markets, FX and labour availability to see that. And, to a greater or lesser extent, almost all of Europe is affected. Will it get better - yes. Will things ever be as cheap as they were - probably not.

ToastedWaffle · 08/07/2022 20:40

I'm.a single parent with two primary aged kids. Just been informed they will be putting breakfast and after school club fees up in september. And this shit show on top. Genuine question, what would happen if we all cancelled our direct debits to the energy companies? I feel sick I cant afford these hikes.

The strange thing is they were so keen to lock the country down to save the lives of the elderly and vulnerable. But now they are happy for them to freeze and starve to death.

Makes me think it was all about finding an excuse for money printing in a last ditch attempt to save a collapsing financial system......🤔

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind1 · 08/07/2022 20:42

I'm going to be cold this winter.

I feel the same. Both my husband and I have moved into higher earnings roles over the past year after struggling for ages, and it feels pointless. Every time I get excited about being able to afford a holiday or replace something shit in our house, a bill increases and the work feels like it was for absolutely fucking nothing.

I know there are people who are worse off and haven't been lucky enough to have a wage increase before people pile on.

This… I’m in France and people here bloody love protesters. There’s no way on earth they would tolerate this situation, it would be laughed at and here people know if you sell off your utilities of course you are lining the pockets of (the already) rich people. They’d never ever do it. It’s THEIR energy, it belongs to the nation, not to some toffy company. I don’t understand how everyone moans about the protesters and yet not happy with the government doing sweet F all to address these issues that affect literally every single person. I don’t know what will happen with this in the UK come the winter but I hope you have a general election & get the conservatives out because they do not care about working people whatever class you are.

Caramac555 · 08/07/2022 20:51

What with this and food price increases, and all the other little increases here and there, suddenly we have no slack in the budget anymore, even with both of us working full time. I can't imagine how single parents and pensioners will cope. I hope people will show kindness to their neighbours where they can because the government either can't or won't give a fuck.

stillherenow · 08/07/2022 20:54

I'm a single parent but thank fuck after my divorce I decided to buy a tiny tiny house and have the security instead of a bigger one with a massive mortgage. I was worried then about losing my job / home but I didn't even consider this cost of living crisis would happen. I have shedload of wood thankfully so that will help but it is a bit terrifying just having one income .

plugee · 08/07/2022 20:58

Will it get better - yes. Will things ever be as cheap as they were - probably not.

I think with the ageing population we are on downward spiral. There is no way we can fund everything (we as in the lay person as it won't be the rich paying more)

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 08/07/2022 20:15

The Tories have been VERY quiet about this for months. Regardless of the Johnson pantomime, the government have failed the country on this. They have no intention of doing anything meaningful. People are going to die.

Weird that, they have been very quiet about various things, while, partygate, sex scandals and whatever else keeps making the front news.

Now, we are all going to be distracted by the leadership campaign. Closely followed, at a guess by a GE. Meanwhile nothing is going to get done with a caretaker PM and the summer recess.

Basically they dont intend to do anything

cakeorwine · 08/07/2022 21:02

The new PM is going to come into a hell of a mess when they start.
A winter of discontent

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2022 21:07

The tories are only concerned about getting in again to line their own pockets
The rest of us can freeze

Mum2jenny · 08/07/2022 21:12

We are all completely fucked! No other comment seems appropriate.
Cannot think of a sensible response to the government ….ok what government?

MissWired · 08/07/2022 21:13

So I will be paying five weeks worth of my yearly salary just for gas and electric alone....unreal.

This will completely torpedo the economy. Many businesses simply will not be able to cover their overheads now. Expect mass redundancies very soon.

I said the other day that the Tories were resigning en masse because they didn't want the responsibility of dealing with the upcoming Depression, because there is no way this will just be your common or garden recession.

We really are fucked.
